When she’s ready on to our Oday 19. Little does she know I’m working her up to cruising on a Catamaran 40. Hee heee Hee. I retire in 24 months.

Did you guys 'burp' the dripless gland to get the air out after putting the boat in the water, this is important? If you don't the spinning hub will make a squealing sound and over heat the fitting. Another thing with dripless glands is that some manufacturers note that grease or oil will break down the rubber bellows. That always made me nervous about these devices, being that they're in the engine compartment. I personally think that a failure back up plan is always a good idea. Mine was to stuff towels, like small hand towels or a wash towel and wrap the crap out of it with tape. Of course I wouldn't be able to use the motor to propel the boat, but it might make the water intrusion slow enough for the bilge pumps to keep up.

Great video, thanks for posting. I just want to say that your boat is well over twenty some years old. This means that every hose (rubber component, think impeller) on the boat needs replacement or at least careful inspection. Especially the ones that are hard to get at. Fuel lines first, engine cooling second, water and waste third. Also, every electrical connector needs careful inspection as well. The steering cables / quadrant and engine control cables as well require careful inspection. The boat was owned by at least one hillbilly as the exhaust “repair” proved. Think about it, the boat is old, people are cheap. They think that if it works don’t fix it, that sorta works with a car, but you can’t just pull over on a boat, as you already know. I’m pretty sure I saw paint on the pump to heat exchanger hose, which means that is most likely the original hose and should have been changed twice already. Don’t want to be a buzz kill, just want you to play it smart.

When you first used the engine after wrapping the exhaust mixing elbow in the insulation did you experience any initial white smoke coming from the hot elbow heating up the insulation? When we wrapped our new elbow and started the engine, in about twenty minutes we had white smoke in the engine compartment. It freaked me out because I didn't know what was causing it.

Those drip less seals are a pain in the ass! You could make up 1or2 pieces of wood that compresses the bellow the right amount it varies but probably 3/4" for your shaft. Then its easy to tighten the set screws onto the shaft with out holding the bellows compressed at the same time! Then it's easy to check Later to make sure it hasn't slipped! Cheers Warren

I’ve been looking at boats and I like this boat I was just curious on what your opinion would be any help would be appreciated.

Lettuce from your garden? Maybe I missed that in a previous episode, but are you growing stuff on the boat? Can you show it, or maybe someone can point me to it in an old episode? I've always wondered if that would be feasible. Sounds like any fresh greens, no matter how small, would be a huge deal, especially when cruising the Caribbean. Fresh cilantro and basil are simple to grow and make even canned/jarred food taste fresher.

So I am sharing a Catalina 30 right now with the owner. Seeing you guys work on shaft under that galley cabinetry made me feel a kinship. How many times did you swear at Catalina for not not having easier access? Older Catalina 30 owners say its great, I think it sucks that you have to deconstruct cabinetry to access rear of engine.

Ok. Cut a pcnof pvc pipe length to fit. Cut one slot length wise. Remove about 2 mm. So now you have a open pvc cylinder. Snap onto shaft, it wieghs nothing and will prevent that berring slipping. Good luck kids.

You should have called this one "Get to know your new (to you) boat". Great video - thanks. But I have a couple corrections. 1. That brown stuff was not from the Chesapeake - it was likely from the ICW between Norfolk and North Carolina. All boats going through there get it. and more importantly, 2. you need to run the reef line down and around the boom so it pulls the clew down as well as aft. If you really need the reef, you will want it attached properly. You can google how to reef a main sail for lots of pics. Ron
@WickedSalty6 жыл бұрын
That would have been a good title! We have not been to Norfolk or ICW on this boat, only from Deltaville VA to C and D canal, so that was all Chesapeake bay :O

When boats go like hell and dive in front of you then slow down. Everyday driving a semi that's what drivers go through all day long. I used to haul airfreight from Seattle to Vancouver international airport. My truck was governed at 63 miles per hour. As I would near the exit for Canadian commercial customs a Canadian can hauler would pass me get in front of me then slow way down and allow his buddies to pass him thus putting me at the back of the line for customs each truck meant I sat 10+ minutes more in line. I bitched and complained every day until the safety guy had the govenor removed from my truck. What I did the first morning was set my cruise control at 62mph. And set off to Canada. About 2 miles before the Canadian commercial customs. The can hauler pulls out to pass me I begin to slowly speed up he gets on my left side and I matched his speed. They were all screaming on the radio in their native language I don't know what they were saying but I bet YOU was a common ending to the stuff they were screaming. Any way a bunch of them over shot the exit and went down the tourist car side a big fine and huge trouble for the truck driver after that and a relief driver took my truck one Saturday and rear ended someone so the front looked like something out of MAD MAX but my new truck was ordered. So no fix the can hauler from the Canadian side would run down the tourist side and dive in front forcing their way Infront of a truck and again hold the line while 20 Canadians would jump.in front well after I jerked a driver out of his truck and tossed him around until he agreed to back out and wait his turn I got a nick name of THE CRAZY YANKEE.

The bugle call at the end is "To the colors". It is played on military bases while the flag is being lowered. Traditionally it is accorded the same courtesies as when the national anthem is played. In fact if you are driving a vehicle on a military installation, you must bring the vehicle to a halt, exit the vehicle, then face and appropriately salute the flag until the music ends. Failure to do so is a ticketable offense (even for civilians).
