You can put a new bearing in the top of your rudder shaft in the water just put a strap or line under the rudder first. Now just do it. you are learning your boat. Don't be afraid of it.

Re: squeaky autopilot. I just installed the same kind of autopilot as you have. RayMarine EV-100 wheel pilot. I love it. However, from the beginning it squeaked when moving left and right. I think I heard the same squeak on yours. It was making me crazy. I did not want to 'oil' the bearings and accidentally get oil on the belt. It turned out to be very easy. Disassemble the wheel pilot by taking off the wheel spokes, and loosening a few screws behind the brackets. The drive wheel will then separate. You will find two idler wheels, one each side of the motor drive. I squirted some dry lubricant ("McLube") into the interior bearing of the idler wheels (not the main drive motor wheel). Very little, just a touch. It did the trick. No more squeak. Sheer bliss and love that autopilot. ! Fair winds. Love your videos. Have been watching you from the very beginning.

Worn top rudder bearing. You can use the kit from Catalina direct but it's a bit of a kluge. Best to replace the bearing itself. It's feasible to do it in the water but not exactly easy, as you have to drop the rudder a few inches in order to pry the old bearing out and insert the new. Not for the faint of heart. If it were me I'd likely do the kit ASAP, in the water, then replace the bearing next time the boat is out of the water for other work. At that point I'd replace the bottom one too (rudder already dropped). Do it soon; the more the play between bearing and post, the faster it wears, so the extent of the problem is going to accelerate over time.

That's a pretty sloppy rudder shaft. Looks like most of the slop is at the upper end maybe. I'd be worried about damage to the rudder tube if it is rubbing on the fiberglass lower down below the waterline. Get a hull breech down there and you are in a world of hurt as far as water ingress is concerned. Just getting to that area on a C30 is a real PITA from the laz.

Wes not need to get too concerned about this (although I'd get it fixed as soon as possible). This is a common problem on the C30, and easily fixed with an epoxy kit available from Catalina or I believe West Systems. A friend did this repair on his Valiant 10+ years ago. Still solid as a rock.

"This is a prefect project to coordinate with other routine maintenance when your boat is out of the water. The rudder is removed to clean out any marine growth and accumulated debris. Then the rudder shaft is prepared for the bearing pads by waxing before it is reinstalled in the boat. This is also an ideal time to install new rudder washers. Since we don't know which boat this kit will ultimately be used on, see the related items below to choose the correct washers for your particular boat."

Re: Sloppy rudder, or any other defect: those are legally the responsabilty of the manufacturer, and that is regardless of how old the boat is. I worked at Ericson Yachts, for 16 years, my last five in customer service. One day a retired judge contacted me about a very old Ericson 41 - it had balcore in the hull (endgrain cut layer of balsa wood) that was installed to stiffen the hull. At the time the boat was over 15 years old. The judge was very nice but he knew the law - based on a case that went to the supreme court in 1927 where Buick was sued due to defect in wooden spoke wheels. They lost because it was a design defect. He made the point that there is no such thing as a time limit on a warranty if the product had a design or manufacturing defect. He also mentioned successful lawsuits against a company that made woodworking machinery. There was an accident due to failure to provide a guard for a saw blade - the equipment was made around 1905 and was sued 60 years later when they were still in business. It may not be worth it in your case, but it is good to know.

Do you find that the weather tends to be more severe and fickle on the water as opposed to being on land? I find that most weather patterns (while on land) are generally predictable. Being located in the land-locked state of Arizona, I've spent most of my life in the great outdoors with Mother Nature as my tutor. Over time you start to develop these intuitive feelings. Knowing when, where and if a storm is about to hit can be easier when you have the skills/knowledge to know when to seek appropriate shelter. However, being out on the open water with nowhere to hide seems entirely too daunting. Nonetheless, we appreciate our vicarious sailor life through the both of you. Keep up the great work my friends.
@woodside636 жыл бұрын
Here is another thing to keep an eye on: at 4:39 in the video, you can see the dusting of black powder on the oil filter, engine cases, etc. This is almost certainly produced by wearing of the fan belt, due to poor alignment. In itself, it is not too difficult to correct and not a crisis, but it may cause other trouble if it has been this way for a long time. When your engine runs, the alternator pulley has a fan effect to push air through the alternator interior for cooling. Over time, the dust can build up in there and prevent adequate cooling. Eventually, it may contribute to failure of the alternator. I know this from experience with a Catalina 36 Universal diesel, not well maintained by previous owner.

That's probably a rudder bearing replacement. I went back and looked at the survey video, and he said he thought the bearings would need replacement. The rudder looks like it's hung very similar to my Pearson 30, and I just replaced the bearings. It was relatively easy, on the hard, but the rudder (on mine) was pretty heavy going back in.

Very very happy to see the videos continuing!!! I got nervous there ;) I wish I could find the boat I want on the LIS or the Hudson River... Now, I may have to do this trip too. I don't mind a little adventure but it looks like it could be a PITA with a new to me boat. Due to unknowns with a new(OLDER) boat and me being a fair weather day sailor. I'll opt out on what looks to save several days/100's of miles by going offshore outside the Delmarva Peninsula . I may be going from Hampton VA. up the Chesapeake, across the C&D canal, down the Delaware to Cape May and then hopping off shore to Atlantic City, and then hopefully Manasquan inlet if it looks calm. If not it's 95 miles over water from Atlantic City to Sandy Hook Bay. I really look forward to seeing what you do! You two (three) are awesome!

Quite possibly just worn rudder stock bearings. A good kludge can be to cut open some 2-liter plastic bottles, to get high density plastic "sheet" from them. Cut to fit, sleeve the entire rudder post and see if that takes out enough slop. Store-bought UHDPE or HDPE will do the same job, in a selection of thicknesses, but the soda bottles will often do "well enough" to get you past the season. Or at least to give you an idea of how much shim stock it needs. (Obviously, the rudder needs to be firmly tied to the hull so it doesn't fall out when you are doing this.)
@briantracy13246 жыл бұрын
The 2 liter bottles are polycarbonate ,, most milk jugs are HDPE ,, HDPE will self-lubricate better ... I would also consider packing greased poly rope around the shaft ,, maybe 5 to 10 turns to center the shaft until you make a proper fix.

Great ideas. of course, there's also GoreTex prop shaft packing, that would be a pricey but even slicker solution. Which would stay pliable forever, easier to remove?
@charles.neuman18 Жыл бұрын
Good idea to have a professional look over the engine and help you learn more about it. Would that be your advice when buying a new boat? I would have thought a survey would uncover pretty much any issue, but I guess a survey has its limits. If there's no water pouring out of the prop shaft or engine, they assume everything's OK? I'm curious what you think buyers should do to make sure the engine is in top shape and the stuffing box is adjusted well.

I had a similar issue with my rudder shaft. My boat was almost 40 years old and it had just worn out. I dropped the rudder and took it to a fabrication shop who just happened to stock the same size tubes used to make my rudder. He had it cut and installed in less than an hour. The more difficult part of the job was getting the outter tube out of the boat so I could iinstall the new one. With the propper persuasion it did finally come out. It seems when the boat was constructed the tube was put into place and the glass laid around it. Luckily, no glass was fractured. I did find there was a lip at the top of the tube and it has to come out from the bottom up....probably a safety precaution so the rudder couldn't fall through into the ocean. I would keep an eye on it and as long as it doesn't get worse you could probably wait. It didn't look to bad from the video. Mine was much worse. Good Luck!

wax your shaft (heh heh) and put some west system w/graphite in rudder tube worked great on my c30
@allynonderdonk75776 жыл бұрын
Your rudder bearing/packing is probably a polyurethane or rubber sleave bearing. It is just a poly slip ring maybe. It looks sloppy at just the top. Find out from other owners what is in there, but you might be able to strap your rudder under the boat in shallowish water. As long as there are no holes in the shaft housing your boat won't sink from dropping the rudder down a little bit, as long as the shaft housing is above the water line. Just watch out for heavy seas, but if your drains aren't clogged then even that wouldn't be an issue. You might be able to strap it in the up position and just pop the old sleave bearing out from the top. Even if the lowers are bad, the upper might make it usable for a few seasons. They sell pad kits and poly/graphite injection kits to help with a worn bearing issues.

Thought I saw water down inside the rudder post too. When you haul drill an 1/8" hole just above the flange of the rudder shell on the very bottom of the rudder to see how much if any water comes. If rust comes out that is not a good thing. If it just drains and no rust is seen then just do what you can to get it dried out and plug the hole with some 5200. That upper rudder bearing needs to be replaced. Lower is probably shot too. Should not be too terribly expensive a part. If there is a rudder post packing gland the packing there should be replaced too. Again, none of the items listed for replcement here are very expensive. Get this issue corrected before it gets YOU. Rudder post itself is probably alright,,,,,,,,,,hopefully.

Your rudder issue could be something as simple as adjusting the tension of your rudder cables. I know they are wire, but trust me, they do stretch over time. But be careful doing this. With that rudder moving as much as it is another question you should be asking yourself is what about the packing gland? That may be ready for failure, and if so will it flood the boat? Most will. Also, when acquiring a new vessel every single hose and hose clamp should be thoroughly inspected and scrutinized, I changed out every one of mine, also the steering system should also be thoroughly evaluated for function and state of maintenance. I found on my boat that a previous owner had done a very poor repair of the rudder upper bushing and would have most likely failed the next time the rudder was put under high stress. luckily I caught this on my pre travel evaluation, hose at p-gland, I didn't catch it on my initial survey though. It really gave me a fright that I almost put my investment and safety into jeopardy over someone else's ignorance. Also, be careful about attempting that repair in the water, I would not recommend it until your know exactly how your rudder is held in position and most likely where the packing gland and bushing are located under the waterline. Also, the quadrant maybe what's keeping the rudder in the boat, do get specific info from your owners group and haul the boat and do the repair, do not risk this it could be your boat, your life and your pet your putting at risk, BITE THE BULLET AND HAUL THE BOAT NOW, before proceeding with your travels.

worn out upper bearing What happens is the hard shaft, usually stainless, outlives the bearing material around it, Ok so now it gets some room around it and everytime you actuate the rudder turning the wheel, the shaft moves to that side. And its worn on both sides. Before you slip her, you will need a new bearing, this may be a complete circular bearing, sometimes with rollers within, or a solid phenolic or bronze material with a break in it, or two halves. Another type has a compressible bearing, where there is a plate on top with like 6 bolts. This would be under the quadrant so that has to come off. Be careful, lash the rudder post somewhere up on the boat so you dont lose it, theres a pin or rod in the shaft (see 6.35 min) for this purpose. Having got under the quadrant, if its one of those types try squeezing it down tightening the bolts, any one first, then the opposite one next and so on a little at a time, If its one of these that might be all you need to do. If not, You will probably also need to pack the stuffing box for the rudder so seek that material out at the same time. And heres a thing, was that water around the pulley fresh, did you taste it? It could be salt water indicating the packing has gone. If you look down the hollow shaft you can see the water in it.

Ok, the coffee making... Double Thumbs up. Nice work! The rudder, common issue. There's many ways to fix. The tube is worn. My Beneteau is suffering similar slack. Not that bad yet, but close. No dinghy dock in Cape May... Yeah, People of Cape May don't want cruisers there. Period. Was there in 2002 and was told by the NJ Police anchoring is not allowed anywhere. You either get a slip and pay the tax or pull anchor and move on. They were polite about it. Pretty sure they were wrong, but they had guns and we didn't. Most of NJ can kiss my ass to be honest. They charge beach access and they tax the hell out of you with everything. A $49 red roof inn cost us $80 a night because of the taxes. Haven't been back since 2003 and never will go back. Cape May was picturesque though. Those bathrooms were NICE! Like Herrington Harbor nice! Better than Haven Harbor nice. Like, how much a foot nice?

I'm not sure about a Catalina, but my Tartan has a rudder stuffing box (much like a shaft stuffing box) that acts like a bearing and if yours is the same, you may be able to take it apart (if it's above the waterline) and replace the flax packing without the need for a haulout. You would need to remove the quadrant (easy) to access it but it's pretty straight forward. Did you taste that water to see if it's salty or fresh? Good luck.

For your wobbly rudder post go to this link and see what Catalina recommends for repairing a lose rudder post on a Catalina 30: www.catalina30.com/techlib/Rudder%20Shaft/rudder-repair.pdf Or Google: Catalina 30 REPAIRING WORN RUDDER POST TUBES Mine has a little bit of play (its an 87) so I'll eventually use the film method to tighten up the shaft. I noticed water is in you rudder post, make sure you remove it before winter storage or you can have a blow out on the side of your rudder (it wasn't hard to fix the rudder side, but who wants to do extra work). Either water came in through the top of the post by dripping from the cover you removed or leaked in from the rudder (salt water, yikes). I fixed the leaky cover (dripping around the emergency tiller access) and I did the Catalina recommend fix for a leak into the post from the rudder (pour epoxy into the post, they have directions). One or both fixed the water in the post issue, no more winter time blow outs.

What period of time (month/day) was this filmed? I live near DC, and am trying to remember such a stretch of cloudy days.

So be honest. Sailing is basically camping on water? Lol
