Life-Size Star Wars Imperial Probe Droid Robot Build!

One of our favorite things we saw at this year's Star Wars Celebration was Mike McMaster's remote-controlled Imperial Probe Droid. This life-size recreation of the menacing Viper droid as seen in The Empire Strikes Back was 3D printed over the course of a year, and wired with servos, motors, lights, and sound effects all remotely controlled by McMaster and his son. We catch up with Mike to learn about the build of this incredible robot and how it's being stress tested at the convention!

I started playing a MMORPG game called “Star Wars Galaxies” back in 2004. They shut the servers down in 2011, but there are still several private Emulator servers up an running that I still play on. If you were a Bounty Hunter in the game you would have to use these Probe droids, and also Arakyd droids in the game to track your Jedi target. So it’s so cool to see something Iv used in a video game for so long now be brought to life, I definitely want one! Please Santa…

Based on a Chris Foss original design, that later Moebius put in the background of a comic, as a tip of the hat to Foss. They were fans of each others work and met on the pre production of the never completed 1970's Dune.

Anybody else do the math on the expense of just the 3D printing filament alone? At 48kg even if they're pretty cheap rolls at $15/kg that's $720 just in filament, for the sake of argument, even if he was able to get filament for $5 for a kg spool it's still $240 *just in filament* ....staggering

Convention centers have big roll up doors in the "back" And miles of crazy hallways.

Thanks! I live with my 96 yr old mother-in-law. She doesn't leave the house so if she ever gets Covid, it will be because I brought it in. She's super sweet so masks for me are essential.
