We go back to where it all began when we first arrived in Portugal nearly two years ago. We visit our first house in Mangualde da Serra and visit our friend Gunda who is currently living there. She moved to Portugal with her husband a year ago to start a new life and tragedy struck. She tells us her story in an interview with Gina but its not all sad and we all have something to learn from it. We also visit our lovely ex-neighbors and go for a hike up the beautiful Serra da Estrela mountains.

We are Ken & Gina and we started making OKportugal videos back in 2019 when we decided to leave the hustle and bustle of the UK for a quieter life on a farm in Central Portugal. Our videos are journal for us to look back on one day and we are really happy that so many others are enjoying following and watching our journey too.
We currently live on our amazing 3.5 hectare farm in Central Portugal along with our cats, Nanook & Mecho and our two dogs, DogDog and Mimosa.

To the outside you have to be strong, don´t show your feeling ... My mother was german, my grand-grand father, a lutheran pastor. I´m an older adult now, and a widower since 2017, after 45 years of marriage. It took me 4 years to regain some normality, but of course, 7 days after my spouse passed away, I looked quite normal. Please stay near to Gunda´s relatives or contacts. Nice work, thats a social network. Good job, congratulations!

@@Alfablue227 After 2 years in Sweden where I have unfortunately found the people to be very unwelcoming (there is great antipathy against immigrants because of the refugee crisis), would I be welcomed in Portugal? Where would you recommend for a tranquil life? 🥰🙏
@Alfablue227
@Alfablue227 3 жыл бұрын
@@inhale.exhale.2527 Yes, they are not the most welcoming. Here there are a minimal few but the great, great majority are very welcoming to foreigners. You can settle almost anywhere, but it depends on your likes, needs, life structure. I would say Minho, up in the North, like in Minho. Infrastructure, not as hot, absolutely stunning, close to Spain, people are so nice but more reserved and conservative. I suggest anywhere around Gerês National Park, but it is rather isolated for some. Still you are about 1 hr from Braga, 1.5 hr from Porto by car. In Winter, it can get cold but not so bad. It is the more Celtic area of Portugal and plenty of history and the old architecture is magnificent. But Portugal is nice everywhere. It is a country of contrast and variety for such a small country, but it is not perfect. It is still underdeveloped in areas, and it has been hit bad economically, but overall it is a great place to live.

It's really moving to see this. I've been watching you for about 8 months. I first saw you because of Theo & Bea, whom I've watched since forever, and have been thinking about. Your message of not holding off on your dreams because life can change very quickly really touched me. The carpet was pulled out from under me when my partner stunned me with a divorce some years back. I've been in a bit of shock ever since. The positivity here means so much. I know you want to support everyone who has been through something difficult, and I want you to count me in. Thank you so much.

Oh, this IS my biggest fear and the very reason I am having a hard time of letting go of 'home' in Canada - God forbid...only IF my husband died and left me alone in Portugal I don't think I could stay. I don't know the language, I'm afraid to drive here and our villa is car dependent. With him, Portugal is paradise, without him...it would be a nightmare. My deepest condolence for your loss - and my biggest admiration for your strength and grace to endure such a tragic surprise.

I understand as much as another person can, how this dear lady feels because my husband passed in much the same way twelve years ago. He felt tired and not well, i made him warm milk and put him to bed and when I awakened at 4 AM, I found that he had passed as he tried to step out of the other side of our bed, sometime while I was sleeping. I had no clue he was so sick although I knew he had high blood pressure that we were not able to treat …we were trying different medications. He was 46 years old. Please tell this lady that she has my deep condolences.

Hi Gina and Ken, It was lovely to watch you go back to your first Portuguese home. I started watching around the time you had visited Portugal, then went back to England and then the drive back to Portugal (in the RV) and your time in the Mangualde da Serra house. Such a beautiful place. I remember the episode with the couple playing the music, it was fun to see them again. It really reminded me of my 3 months in Portugal. When I was living in Atouguia da Baleia, my elderly neighbour and I didn't speak a word of each other's language but we hugged every time we saw each other and she would chatter away in Portuguese and we would smile and laugh. I cannot wait to see her again! It was heart-wrenching to hear Gunda's story. She is such a beautiful woman with a lovely personality. It must not be easy!! I had a good cry while I listened because it really hit home. There have been a few reasons I've had to put my move to Portugal off, but I'm so determined... I lost my Mum last year and I believe that the Universe kept me in Canada, especially during Covid for the very reason that I'd be here for her last moments. You two have such big hearts and you've really created a beautiful life for yourselves there. The community you surround yourselves with seem to be such great friends, as obviously you are to them!! Bravo to you.

Thanks Ken $ Gina. This is a very special episode to me. What a lovely lady for sharing her story. I wish her well and hope that she will find peace and the place where she would like to make her permanent home. It’s very inspirational to see how slowly but surely she is building up her inner strenght. Bless her!

WOW! That was great! That is a very touching story, and a great interview! Gina, you really handled that with beautiful kindness and grace and made it easy for her to tell the story of losing her husband. I'm sure it was good for her to talk about it, and motivational to me and thousands of your viewers! Nice Job!

Ken and Gina: Awesome video! Thank you for telling a story in such a beautiful and meaningful way. Gunda: what a remarkable strong lady you are! This episode just puts an exclamation point on the saying "Life happens while we are making other plans!" My husband and I are looking forward to retiring in under 4 years, I want him to retire "early" and experience life without rigid schedules.
