VIDEO WE DID ON MOLLY'S CHANNEL: • Blind Stuff (Chit Chat...
This week I'm joined by Molly Burke & Gallop, who works as Molly's guide dog. Service dogs are a topic I'm interested in as a bystanders and potential guide dog user someday. Molly answers my questions and shares some insight on life with a guide dog.

It's surprising that there are people who feel bad for guide dogs. They have such a great purpose and meaningful existence!

Great video, but one thing I thought about when Molly said guide dogs have their owners lives in their hands but other service dogs don't is that that's not always true. Alert dogs, be it diabetic alert dogs, seizure alert dogs, cardiac alert dogs, or alerting to other things as an individual task, also take this same responsibility for their owners life and health, and they shouldn't be forgotten as valuable service dogs.

Totally agree! My sister has a seizure dog and to this day, I am surprised how much we have to tell people not to touch the dog. The distraction is an issue especially since wizard (the dog) has to have enough time to warn my sister before the seizure happens.

i'm a vegan and hear the term all the time that you should feel sorry and not support the service dog community, but personally for me i hate it when people say this. i've seen myself that dogs love having a purpose as molly says, i don't see any kind of "abuse" or anything bad in a working dogs life because they love working! i watch molly's video's all the time and i see gallop is always so happy to see his harness. it really is just a big game for them to work and as molly say's they love it and if they don't want to work they will never be forced to. i love both your channels and please keep putting the positivity of guide dogs out into the world! :)

I Have a service dog she does mobility, alerts to a ton of stuff(natural alert) and does guide work for when my migraines mess with my vision or have dissociation episodes/panic attacks. She loves working and is two different dogs on and off harness. she is calm on harness and a total heathen off harness. She is a Standard poodle because i have a dog allergy. And she is my other half the calm and reliable half.

It always pissed me off when I see people running up to a guide dog and pet it or try to get their attention, it's just so rude, it's worse enough to pet a normal dog without asking it's owner, but it's so much worse with a guide dog. I know it's hard looking at a cute dog without petting it but you wouldn't run up to a sighted person and cover up their eyes and ears.

Molly you are so right about a working dogs life. Now with functional MRI testing we know a lot more about dogs minds. Dogs love the sight, smell, sound of us. Gallop and most dogs would rather have their guardian than hot dogs. Yes these experiments are done and in the bag. Yes your dog is proud, confident, and with you. Ask him; thats all he wants. While on the subject of placing service dogs with a young adult recipient. How did the presence of your first and second guide dogs affect your parents attitude about your venturing out?

I love both of you guys! I love learning from you. I always keep an open mind and learn more so I can educate my daughter to the best of my ability. From the beginning at least once she was able to understand me, I told her that every one is the same. If people have limbs missing they are still a human being no disability makes them less of a human! And I am really glad I did because compared to some other children she stands up for her friends and other people.

If she is completely blind, why does she look at stuff? Like the harness when she is going to pick it up, why would you look at it (or even in the general direction) if you're blind and you know (or think) it is right beside you.

If you don't have sight you learn to where sounds come from. And she probably puts the objects in consistent places so she doesn't have to fumble around looking for it.
@Alvarnea
@Alvarnea 7 жыл бұрын
She hasn't been fully blind all of her life, and the 'looking at things when you reach for them' is a very natural thing to do when you've at least had sight once. In one of her videos she said she went completely blind at around 14, if I remember correctly. She doesn't need to do it anymore since she doesn't see, but it's a reflecs, so it's really hard not to do.

Sorry, deleted my last reply. But nobody would put this many videos about being blind just to fake it. Nobody. And if she lists specific conditions and pieces of technology and she know about registering for guide dogs etc, that's a lot of research for a supposed faker. And she wasn't always blind, so maintaining eye contact when you clearly know where the sound is from is not hard.

She's used to looking at people and things since she didn't go blind until she was a teenager. She can see light and shadow so why shouldn't she look in his direction. There are many, many levels of blindness and not every blind person is just going to stare in one direction w/o moving their eyes nor wear dark glasses 24/7.

She's said that in her videos, she looks towards the lighting behind her camera rig. Since the light is in front of her/on each side of the camera, she knows to orient herself toward the light.
