I just bought my I-pace and am blown-away by how much I love it; welcome to the next generation of automobile! Going back to a regular combustion engine car is rather crude by comparison. LOVE the regenerative braking, I set it on high and hardly touch the brakes, the notion that you're recapturing the energy is truly efficiency-awesome!!! Admittedly, when you do need the brakes in combination with the re-gen, there is a bit of an un-smooth conflict with both systems slowing you down...but it's minimal and quite tolerable. I don't feel this vehicle is an SUV, it's much more of a class referred to as a Cross-over, but who cares about labels and classifications. Let's face it, most EV's are butt-fugly and this is because most manufacturers only sell them to get 'credits' so they can sell their profitable gas-guzzlers. I tried to like the Chevy Bolt and Nissan Leaf (which is improved but still wonky)but found little appealing on the EV market...and where is it written that EV must be economy? I wanted something a bit nicer in both appointments and looks. Why the Jag? Because I felt it looked much nicer then the Tesla...that's it and that's all it needs to be. Buying something on looks alone, try arguing with a women and her Jimmy Choo shoes; all these vehicles have their features and qualities, it often comes down to what strikes your fancy and the Jag did it for me. So far, LOVING it. Also, having driven a Hummer for years and getting sneers from Prius owners, now I get to give them the dirty looks, LOL Wish list is simple: I rather wish this was a shorter 2-door sportier vehicle, I'd gladly trade some opulence for some Italian sport car aggressiveness. Also, it looks better in the lowered suspension setting but it pops you back up to regular ride height at 15mph; I only need clearance when I need clearance, the rest of the time I'd love to see this thing about 2" lower to simulate the sexier Porsche Panamera in stance. In conclusion, I'm super happy and loving it. And guys, this is a car, not a wife: you can leave it without going through a costly divorce....point being, this isn't a life-long decision: buy it, enjoy it and move to the next toy in a few years when something newer or more exciting comes along. About my only gripe with this car is that it's clearly not an authentic Jaguar on account of the fact that it doesn't uphold the time-honored tradition for decades of all Jag's: it doesn't drip/leak oil : )

@youferrer5 жыл бұрын
I own an I Pace and my son is thinking about a Model 3. We just did an hour long test ride of the Model 3. Here are some observations. 1. The I Pace has much better overall build quality. Materials, fit, finish, seats, steering wheel, et cetera all goes to Jag. It better as it is 25K more. 2. The brakes on the Tesla are mushy. Don't like it. Brakes on the Jag are good. 3. We drove the dual motor so it had the same 0-60 of the Jag 4. The model 3 is a lighter car so you get much more range out of it. 5. Although Jag has an Autopilot equivalent, Autopilot is still better. The gap will widen when city Autopilot comes out. 6. The lack of buttons gets a bit silly as why do I need a software unlock for the glove box. 7. Like the credit card unlock on the Model 3. 8. The jag infotainment system isn't that laggy. It's that they choose to do transition animations on nearly every screen. That really slows it down. It still could use a faster CPU/GPU but it's more of a design choice. The infotainment is also buggy. It's made by Panasonic so maybe an update will get Alexa as Panasonic has partnered with Amazon and that would really help.

Follow up: I gifted my son a little bit of cash (he's still in college) and he went and got the Model 3. He gave up his motorcycle (which made mom very happy). Anyone interested in a Panigale? Ive had my 2019 I-Pace HSE for 11 months now and have driven 35000km in that time so far in ALL weather conditions and situations. Can really say that the car is GREAT! But I need to adress the EXTREMELY slow charging speed at DC superchargers! The promise of 0-80% in 40 minutes is not realistic at all. It really sucks having to sit at the charger for a long time and in the same time it takes me to charge up my i-pace, 3 audi e-trons had already arrived, charged fully and left one by one. During winter here in my cold climate in Norway the door handles tend to freeze and will not retract fully when driving away sometimes. And then there is the issue with dust coming in the back doors that they still have not fixed after all this time. But overall i love the car, and i am super happy with it. The slow infotainment doesnt really bother me that much other than the fact that it could and should load up faster after starting the car. The only real drawback for this car is the charging speed. Even the Kona electric charges faster at a DC supercharger. For someone like me that drives alot and commutes long distances regularly this is a really big drawback, and i just hope they fix the charging speed when the I-Pace SVR comes out so that i can replace mine with that one.

the i-pace is a car made by automotive engineers. the tesla is a car made by software programmers. jaguar knows about construction consistency, materials, and panel gaps. be careful about public charging stations. i did a quick check and many seattle charging stations charge significantly more per kwh than residential rates. sometimes more than 2x, making EV driving more expensive than gas powered vehicles. don't get screwed, check the $$/kwh.

"the i-pace is a car made by automotive engineers. the tesla is a car made by software programmers. jaguar knows about construction consistency, materials, and panel gaps." And again, here we have the tired, lazy and fully debunked trope of Tesla quality problems. Tesla's are built as well or better than any other car on the road today. They have the HIGHEST safety ratings of any car out there, and if their cars were built as poorly as the Tesla haters would have you believe, they'd fall apart when hit, not achieve 5* ratings across the board. And guess what? The iPace is NOT BUILT BY JAGUAR. It's built under contract to Magna Steyer.

I personally LOVE having a rear wiper...helps an awful lot in our NY winters. However, I bet if you give the rear window of that Jag a good going over with Rain-X it'll do a good job of keeping it clear. As for that Volt and not having bought gas for it, you should probably run down the tank now and again so the gas doesn't go stale and gum things up. Then fill it up with non-ethanol gas and some fuel stabilizer for maximum longevity.
@DrivenCarReviews5 жыл бұрын
Yes, Mariko misses a rear wiper (she drove wagons for decades). GM plug-ins have sensors that monitor the gas and tell the engine when to burn it off. It also helps to keep the gas engine in top shape.

@DonBurke15 жыл бұрын
@Robert Blackford, I have driven across the country multiple times in my Tesla using the the supercharger network. East, West, North, and South to the tune of 70,000 miles in under three years. I don't have to stand at gas stations smelling that awful smell. I don't have to listen to the rattles and vibrations of a fossil fuel car. I don't have to worry whether my car is on if it's in a garage. I can run the heat all night if I sleep in the car. I'll take EV travel over fossil fuel cars any day of the week.
@DonBurke15 жыл бұрын
@Robert Blackford I'm glad I don't have to travel with you. If every stop you make is just 3 minutes then that is nightmare travel. I used to travel 1,500 miles from FL to MN non-stop. I was 20. I have zero desire for that these days. To each their own. I look forward to the day when enough advancements are made that even the late adopters who cling to ICE vehicles decide it is time to switch. Until then, happy polluting.
@DonBurke15 жыл бұрын
Oh, Robert. You jumped into a thread about an EV with your opinion that long distance travel in an EV isn't possible when it clearly is. You are lambasting people who make a decision other than one you would make. I find traveling by EV to be a joy. I eat, relax, communicate with others, go to the bathroom, and stretch my legs while charging. The car is ready before I am most of the time. I get that there aren't enough chargers for you yet. There will be one day. If you are going to state supercharger counts, at least be accurate. There are 630 in the USA as of today and growing weekly. Still small in comparison to gas stations but gas stations had a 100 year head start. There are plenty of superchargers for me. I can go wherever I want. In terms of charging times, most people with a Model 3 will spend less than 15 minutes at a supercharger in the near future when supercharger V3s become widely available. I am happily in the EV camp and many others are joining me every day. You will clearly be a laggard on the adoption continuum of EVs. That is fine. I'm glad you enjoy burning dead dinosaurs. You forgot to mention line steeing assist that .... disengage w/o any warning and notification and you have subsecond to prevent running off road. Also - 3 adults in rear seats !? Common, not realistic due to not having flat floor. I did a test drive - nice car, nice price (now 20k off). But has major flaws if you want to use line assist .

Aerodynamics & motor selection. All Teslas have sloping rooflines akin to a Prius to maximize aerodynamics, but at the cost of cargo space. No Tesla in existence can go a full lap on the Nurburgring or even a 20 dash on the Autobahn before the batteries overheat - something Jaguar doesn't.

Looks like a nice effort, but if they really want to compete with Tesla, they will need to invest in fast chargers throughout the country and in autonomous driving technology. I have 2 Teslas, and find autopilot to be invaluable. The newest software update is really close to self-driving on highways. Yes, you do still have to pay attention and some prefer to do the driving themselves, but I can tell you first hand that on long, boring highway stretches, having the option to let the car manage the heavy lifting is great. JLR really needs to step up in this department. Similarly, without a network of fast chargers like Tesla has with its Supercharger network, it really does limit long distance travel. With Tesla, you can take the car anywhere without worrying about where or how to charge it. Finally, the Jag arguable has a nicer interior, Tesla's UI is hands down the best in the business. While we are used to lots of buttons, most of those buttons rarely get used, and Tesla makes all the stuff you regularly use -- skipping stations, adjusting autopilot speed and following distance, adjusting cabin temp -- easily accessible.
@itechiwizard835 жыл бұрын
With regard to the Tesla MCU, more than the lack of buttons substituted by the on screen controls, it's responsiveness and updatability is superb. It's the best in car computer system to be fitted in a production car by human kind.

Great review. To me "battery efficiency" is only a factor to the extent that it affects range. People that drop $75K on a BEV could care less if their nightly top up costs $2.50 vs $2.10. What every BEV driver does care about is range, so the case could be made that the I-PACE needs a larger battery.
@V_Dubya4 жыл бұрын

I've been a Jaguar owner for about 4 years now and I was very happy with my XF. I needed to replace it and I was smitten by the I-pace... however. While the base price here stated 80k EUR, a reasonably equipped one came at over 90k, which put it straight into Model S territory. In short, I bought a 100D and these are my comments: Con Tesla: - I love the look of the I Pace over the Model S, although I think the Model S is a very good looking car - The Jaguar interior is much better than the Tesla - The jaguar is more compact, making it easier to park or fit in a garage Pro Tesla: + The 100D range is miles ahead (pun intended) + The Tesla is a lot faster + More rear room and storage + A 93k 100D was just way better equipped than a 93k I-Pace + Much better self-driving capabilities + Better supercharger network In the end, the pros outweighed the cons for me. But I can see people getting the I-Pace, I really like the car when I got it for a couple of hours.
@KristoferOlsson5 жыл бұрын
Dont buy the I-Pace if you live in realy cold climate. They tested it in Finish Lappland around -35c. It had huge problems and the range dropped way more then any other EV tested.
@matthewlibanio82275 жыл бұрын
Well not everywhere is that cold. And I assure you, an ICE car will not be problem free and totally efficient at -35C. Filling up gas in -35C is also fantastic fun. This is a tired arguement.
@frankreiff5 жыл бұрын
Hhmm.. here's a link to the test results: www.ipaceforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=1184 The actual article is behind a paywall. No sign of the i-Pace losing more range than other vehicles. At -11 C, the range they got was 322km (v 391km for Model S, 333km for both Kona and Niro, 199 BMW i3, 150km Nissan Leaf), which is very close to its usual range. It was also the fastest on the snow track, fastest at 5-60km sprint on snow, so winter handling seems to be no problem at all. It used the most juice with 31kWh/100km vs 27kWh for the Model S, but then again it is by some distance the largest car in the test. Tesla Björn has a video comparing efficiency in Norway on a mix of roads (city & motorway) between Model-X, e-Tron and I-Pace and well.. the I-Pace won by a whisper against the Model-X with the e-Tron being left far behind. Granted the Model-X is a larger vehicle, is older, etc.. but in the end, the only Achilles heel concerning efficiency in the I-Pace is its drag coefficient which at 0.29 is much higher than any Tesla's without actually being bad (better than any current Ferrari and better than say a similarly quick SUV like the BMW X6M at 0,38). Here it is the styling that has won out. Tesla gets its great drag coefficient largely by building the car's look around the wind tunnel results: a great engineering decision, but resulting in a teardrop look that might not please everyone. The I-Pace also gets delivered with huge super-wide-high-grip-performance tires that make it handle beautifully but (obviously) create a lot more friction and thus resistance. As far as I know at the moment, the I-Pace is the only twin synchronous permanent magnet motors EV on the market. The power train _should_ thus be the most efficient because those are by their nature the most efficient motors; the only drawback to synchronous motors is the much higher price (neodymium-iron-boron not being cheap). The I-Pace is a great car but there is no doubt that it is far more practical in Europe than in the US. We are starting to have a good public charging infrastructure for 50-300kW CCS fast chargers, AC chargers are everywhere, our distances are mostly shorter, our roads smaller and our parking spaces tighter. In the US, your mileage may vary :-)
@Megazone_FI5 жыл бұрын
The main problem of this "test" in Finland was the lack of DC chargers, not range dropping in cold. Jag 7kW inboard AC charger is too slow for travel causing long stops in Lapland trip.
