Regarding the high number of black women being unmarried - three things I can think of: 1) that has not always been the case. I’m sure if we look back to the 50’s and 60’s we will find that more black women were married. What happened was as we got into 70’s, 80’s, 90’s etc. factors including drugs in our community, the prison system, feminism, and the rise of black women workplace while there was a decrease in black men working drove black men and black women apart. 2) in this country black men are more disrespectful of black women today than men of other ethnicities black to their women. This is largely due to the the music we have listened to (the gangsta rap in the late 80’s and 90’s for instance), TV and movies, etc. 3) black American children are more likely to come from a broken home than whites or other ethnicities. This means they have less of an example of what a healthy, functional relationship looks like. Thus, they many times didn’t know what kind of qualities to look for in a man and how he should treat her.

I have a question for the comments made about certain women prioritising their careers over marriage.. If you’re single and marriage is something that you desire but you don’t have any prospects, instead of wasting your time and getting your heart broken, or becoming frustrated by dating or messing with men you KNOW aren’t in line with your purpose, wouldn’t it be a ‘safer bet’ to just focus on your work/career instead? I don’t see how a single woman could prioritise something she doesn’t have (marriage, that is..) - and if it is, it (marriage) can often become an idol..

I'm 41 and single. I believe that so many are single bc of culture. We have our ways of doing and thinking about how life should be. Our thinking and priorities simply don't align with real love, marriage and family life. We love this world, the ways things are done, looks & success more than anything.

Very good show! I remember I was a member of a church where the pastor put the focus on women to write the list, no instructions to the men which there none in the age group of the women who were there. Me and my friend tore the list up we still have values and standards we go by but not limited to a list. 38 and have hope to marry a man that fits me and I fit him in the eyes of God not people!
