Horizon: The Truth about Smell
Taste is our most indulgent sense but it is only in recent years that we have started to understand why we really love the foods we do - and it is a lot more surprising than you might think. There may a way to make food taste sweeter without adding any extra sugar and it is all down to a trick that happens in your brain. Horizon meets the scientist who has grown the perfect tomato, that is sweeter and juicier than anything you are likely to find on a shelf, as well as the men and women hoping to become elite, professional tasters.
Welcome to BBC Earth Science! Here we answer all your curious questions about science in the world around you (and further afield too). If there’s a question you have that we haven’t yet answered let us know in the comments on any of our videos and it could be answered by one of our Earth Science experts.

Having Congenital Anosmia (born without a sense of smell) I was so thankful when all my all my kids simultaneously said "Mom, skunk, roll up the windows." So happy my children all have their sense of smell.

I don't have a sense of smell but I can taste. I can tell the flavours of things. I never had a sense of smell so I have no idea how different it is, but I can still tell the flavours of things and apple crisp is my favourite. I do like hot sauce though.

@@futurez12 see to me that's like saying sight comes from touch. Also, people keep telling me some things smell different then they taste. So even for you smelling people it's not as connected as you think.

I have the exact same thing from getting sick. Its very weird. I eat things now in about half the size I once did and I eat things that I would have never eaten that is healthier. I can tell salty or sweet but that is it. Everything in the world has a blank to it when it goes in my nose. No matter how horrible or strong the smells are.

I was born without a sense of smell and, I dont know what "flavour " is. I'm a fussy eater; my kids dread going out to eat with me because I'm seldom satisfied. My enjoyment of food is based on texture and, most importantly, seasoning. Surprisingly, I've been told that I'm a good cook, and not just by my children😊

Losing one's sense of smell is one of the worst things that can happen to one. I lost my sense of smell sometime in April 2020 for about a month and it was very depressing. Lost touch with taste and burnt virtually everything I cooked.

You do realize that we cover covid up and only announce it after it is too late right?, and no one can be sure that covid really originate from china, covid symptom is so unclear that it is hard to tell who the first person that contracted it, plus it is a new stuff, the tech and methode to diagnose it are yet to be invented, even today covid test sometimes still fail, so it is probably exist way earlier. If you notice covid like syptom before 2019, then it is probably that stuff.

yeah, I have a love hate relationship with meat, most is actually tasteless and just a giant chewy mess. but in saying that I do like meat, just I don't really enjoy whole chicken breasts, or steaks, or pork chops. (unless the steak is very rare). and I've never eaten a pork chop or roast I've enjoyed.
