Your channel has changed the way I look at my backyard. So much lichen and moss! Last year I dug up a small patch of clover and hastily put it an ill fitting pot. Honestly I’m not even sure why I did, but I brought it down to the basement when the snow was too much but other than that, I left it alone. This year it’s beautiful! Tall and it flowered! I need to find a nice pot even though he’s an outside cat because it’s too big and proud for the icky vessel it’s living in now. ✌️🤟 Edit: repotted the beast today and I could hear him roar. When the fry gets bigger, you can try feeding it brine shrimp or Daphnia, and then maybe earthworms if it runs out of food in the ecosphere! If it's a native species, you can release it where you found it once it gets big enough to not be eaten immediately. Unless you want to keep it I suppose lol, it wouldn't be damaging the adult breeding population if you did since it hatched in your jar.
@Beyond_The_Odyssey3 жыл бұрын
@@snakewithapen5489 since he’s been in the jar I’m going to keep him. I’ll get him some friends when he’s older. @@Beyond_The_Odyssey ah okay that's cool! Sounds like you're preparing lol. If it is a schooling fish since most freshwater river or pond fish are, I would definitely recommend getting some more fish of the same species for it to school with, if you can find the species at a pet store at least. (Once he gets old enough for you to identify it anyway, and for him to be safe with other fish!) It's probably fine for you to keep him since you're raising him in the jar already, I think it's only an issue when people take adult fish that could have been breeding out of the wild population to keep as pets.

A year ago I had an idea. We share the same hobby btw, love your stuff. But you know what would be interesting? Set up vivariums with different climates (light, water, humidity etc.) and then asking foreign people, if they could send you soil samples from their countries. Imagine a friend in Brazil that has access to Amazonian rainforest soil, he collects 500 g of top soil from different places, packages it (insulated with heat packs!) and sends it to you, where you put it in the vivarium and see what will happen! With all the spores, seeds, micro- and macroorganism, eggs etc. that would be a surprise egg like no other!

Yes rove-beetles are awesome. I saw one yesterday and I was so happy. Haven't seen them in a while but I was working in the local butterfly garden and I saw something crawling where there was a pile of mowed grass. It was one of the ocypus spec. Around 3cm. Very cool. I knew them from my childhood when I turned rocks and tiles to see what is underneath them. I put it in my hand and I put it down somewhere else. When I pulled of the glove the rove-beetle started doing the scorpion thing with the back of its tail. I am wondering if ocypus is able to eat all the other animals in the jar. Would be interesting.

The aquatic ones are actually really simple to make. Just take a pickle jar or whatever you happen to have around, scoop up some water (preferably from a body of water like a pond or river, but you can get it from basically anywhere) and you're golden. Just make sure you give it some time for algae to grow before you seal it, though. Otherwise the creatures inside may suffocate.

@@blizzard2508-k7n well, some more obvious than others, the insects die within a week more than often and then the plants begin to wilt. I'm not exactly sure if it was a temperature thing? My household cant make up their mind on whether they want the house warm of straight up freezing 😒
@blizzard2508-k7n3 жыл бұрын
@@georgecarmack6813 it would be best to be more specific about the temperature range, but that doesn't sound like the problem. I'd imagine the plants and animals would die at the same time, if temperature is to blame. If you do think temperature is a problem, adding a thermometer (to check) and insulating the jar could help. If you can't insulate it all, cover the soil. Ground changes temperature slowly and is likely used to hide in if it gets cold. There are a lot of other factors (moisture, chemicals/chlorinated water, oxygen/CO2, light, biodiversity) but I'm not too knowledgeable on this.
