There is actually a story from a former SWAT officer that he have an "oops" accident where his team drug busting operation failed miserably because the battering ram basically can't breach the door because it was sturdy and placed correctly enough that it become rigid. So the owner of the house just said "Umm, can I just open the door for you?" So one of the SWAT team just weakly replied "Yes, please" And then the owner open the door. They search the whole house and found nothing illegal drug related. Nobody got hurt, injured or died. Just embarrassed to their very core. You can find him in the video "Former Ex-officer react to Ready or Not Weapons". He practically the guy in the video.

CT is hard in the same way that cybersecurity is hard - there are many layers and coordination points. Everything needs to be airtight for the good guys. The bad guys only need to find one gap or seam to exploit.

Furthermore, to my reasoning, this factor fuels the never-ending argument that one man's terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter. well when 5 counter terrorists have to defend 2 valuable areas which 5 terrorists intend to plant a bomb, it's usually 50/50. But when 5 counter terrorists have to rescue 1 of 2 hostages from 5 terrorists, it usually goes until the last man is standing, meaning there's a defender's advantage, and the terrorists usually win.

What is the single best strategy the U.S. could employ to reduce terrorism against itself? I am not an expert on US foreign policy. But there is a general principle that applies here: Talk, negotiate, persuade, help and befriend more widely and less selectively. Bomb, coerce, threaten and blackmail economically much less.
@2hotflavored6662 жыл бұрын
You're indeed not an expert, nor do you have an understanding higher than a naive moron. I agree here. Terrorist cells thrive in enviroments of political instability. If a government has a terrorist problem, it most likely means their economic, social, and political laws are corrupted or damaged. If I had to guess I'd be the analyst. Everyone wants to be the guy charging in, but the reality is few people can do it or are willing to do it. All things considered everything dealt with here is no different than waging a conventional war. Yes the troops get the most attention, but the others behind the scenes, military and civil, keep those guys fighting. In the meantime you got to make sure you don't irritate you potential allies (you don't have to be friends with them, just friendly) or make things difficult for the politicians who have to do deal with the international fallout that might occur.

A lot of guys will probably say kick in the door, and I'll admit, my masculinity loves envisioning myself as the invulnerable badass kitted out with magical gloved fingers that shoot targets effortlessly with pinpoint precision, BUT.... Realistically, knowing my talents and abilities, I'd probably want to be the analyst who disseminates the information and really tries to get to the bottom of who's behind what and why. Not only in a "let's go get the bad guys" sense, but ALSO in the "let's make sure we don't kill or arrest the wrong people" sense. Also, as a fairly avid Chess player, I enjoy setting up strategies to catch my opponent by surprise while trying to see if I can decode his or her strategies. In like manner, I'd probably get a kick out of recommending strategies to catch the potential opponent off-guard -- cut this potential resource off and see who gets unusually upset, or send this decoy out and see who gets their hand stuck in the cookie jar. Then watch them try to explain themselves when they either get caught or act extremely suspicious. I'm a bit of a mind game player, so analyst or even tactician would probably be my preferred role in a CT situation.

well you have to split up ur team to cover the two bomb sites. This can leave 2 people on one site and 3 on the other and you may want someone holding mid further splitting up the team. The terrorists will most likely attack with all 5 on one site forcing a rotate for the counter terrorists who are on the wrong site. This gives the terrorists an advantage as they can easily take site if done correctly.

I separate anti-terrorism from counter-terrorism. Anti-terrorism is defensive (and may be proactive, but is usually regarded as reactive). Counter-terrorism is offensive action--taking the fight to the terrorist lairs, seizing the initiative. This complicates counter-terrorism, especially when basically everybody is an anti-terrorist. On the other hand, there's not enough resources to use counter-terrorist assets in purely defensive modes as protectors--the counter-terrorist folks have to locate and neutralize the terrorist actors so that the anti-terrorists don't wind up being first responders to an incident. The NYFD on 9/11 were anti-terrorists who managed to rescue thousands after two airliners hit the World Trade Center and then rescued dozens more after several buildings collapsed--sometimes all that anti-terrorists can do is save the injured and move people to safety.

What are the better ways to counter terrorism? I'd love to say the answer is to give more money to the military. I would like to instead answer the question by referencing the book *Counterstrike: The Untold Story of America's Secret Campaign Against Al Qaeda* Written by renowned authors and highly acclaimed. Near the end of its 336 pages, it made the two acknowledgements that you see pretty much every expert make: 1. Ignorance and poverty are the real roots of terrorism. 2. We really don't know whether our military efforts are making things worse or better. Then they go right back to their exciting blow by blow account of how we are defeating terrorism (or exacerbating it, we really don't know). I do know we are spending unimaginable rivers of money at it. As a rescue pilot, I have one idea. There are certain acute disasters (floods for example) where the military can save lots of people without getting into long term nation building. The TV sets of the world need to show guys like me saving people like them, and far fewer scenes of them picking bodies out of buildings we blew up. The "terrorist masterminds" we are killing are easily replaceable, the images we are creating are indelible. It is far harder to save someone than to kill them, and most of war is logistics (food, water, hospitals, transportation, bridge repair, etc.) so it is great training. And as someone who recovered 184 people in one night in New Orleans, I can assure you, it is a highpoint of your life. The only way the world will ever see us not as villains but as heroes is that we need to start being heroes. Another great crossover opportunity is what I would love to be in charge of (if it existed) a DOD extreme forward operations research center. It would develop technologies that allow troops to "live off the land" with minimal supplies in austere environments. Currently supporting a troop at a FOB costs $500K a year. This would create spinoffs for the world's poor to live better lives off of fewer resources.

I think it's because of their ability to integrate themselves into civilian population, which makes counter terrorism hard. It's their camouflage and weapon at the same time. It would be 2x harder for an invading force to do so as hostility towards them would be greater from the civilian population which invites even more support for the terrorist group. Not only that, terrorism exploits those who are vulnerable; children, lack of education, the poor, and those who have any grievances against any body of the government. So when you kill one, he could be replaced by either his son, or another person. I think the real solutions to these things are a balanced effort between armed response and civil response. Armed response for those people who promote and exploits those who are vulnerable, to those who won't change their radicalized views and continue to terrorize the innocent. And civil response to those who are in need, to those who are willing to surrender and go back to the folds of the law, and to those who are being affected by the conflict. Cause if armed responses was the only solution that would be acted upon, then there would be holes unplugged.

No foreigners got involved FOREIGN militaries can fight terrorists because they will inevitably make themselves the bad guys. The only people who can defeat terrorists are the people,governments,and military of their counties. also bombing campaigns don't work, they never will.
