Couple of observations from your excellent video. Like you we travel a lot in Europe with our Nugget Plus. Railway crossings, in Europe it is seconds between barriers closing and trains passing which I remember you commenting on somewhere (Norway maybe?). In the UK people gamble because of the delay and because of the known gamblers they make the delay longer! We tend to use sites, 3 children in tow and sites in Europe are so much better and much, much cheaper! Only stayed with the CC club because of the 5 van sites (CL’s) which can be very good. Birchanger Services. Been twice over the years, horrible place, always congested, you’d have been better hanging on for another half hour to Cambridge, which is fairly decent (as motorway services go). Like you, our van is parked up out front as I’m laid up for various reasons and not been out since our Italy trip in August, miss it very much! At least I’ll have time to catch up on your Isle of Wight tour! Keep up your excellent work, still subscribed this end, take care. R

You make a good point about railway crossings but sometimes the over cautious lowering of the barriers so early is just ridiculous 😖 We will probably be using CLs more with the new van although sometimes they can be expensive too. yes you are right we had been unsubscribed. We are excited to see you at consort. We have had 3 Consort vans. They are great and a great company to deal with. presently we have a 5m46cm van and it can park anywhere you cute little red van is. Only compromise is sleeping across the van but we got used to that surprisingly quickly.

Bad experience last summer with Camping & Caravan Club. As members we booked in advance as a campervan. When we arrived they looked down their noses at our professionally converted Peugeot mini camper saying it wasn't a "proper" campervan! After heated words they allowed us to stay in the field with the tents! We are not members anymore!

Hi both, Yes still subscribed but I have heard this from other channels too, so I'll keep my eye on it. I see the Caravan club hasn't really changed then. I used to belong to both C.C and C&CC but I had several bad experiences with the Caravan Club so I stopped subscribing and just used the grand originals and their listed privately owned sites. Before they changed their name they looked down their noses at Motorhomers. Nice to see you both out and about again before the winter really sets in. I'll be watching again tomorrow of course. 🐻

Hi Nigel. We still belong to the Caravan & Motorhome club and keep it for emergencies only and discounts on things. This used to be a hobby for all but the prices are so high only those with money can afford to use them. It always makes me smile when following a wild camp I realise I saved £36

I have used Waze for sometime now. I think it’s really good. I like how it shows vehicles on the side of the road that are stopped and even one you will like Ken. It warns you of any police that are in the area.

Extortionate prices! We’ve cancelled our subscriptions to both caravan and camping and the motor home club too. We’re not really confident with off grid camping yet so tend to go to either family run campsites or the 5 pitch sites and we’ve found some beauties at reasonably prices too. Funny you should say that but on the trip to Leeds I completely altered the way I sit. More upright with a cushion in the small of the back. It made a big difference to how long I was able to drive. Thanks to exercises my back is improving. 👍

We were in Norway this summer. We saw only one other UK van. It was mostly Germans and Norwegians. It certainly didn’t feel crowded at all, we stayed on campsites and had no problems finding space (except in Bergen)

That is a very steep price for a campsite 😳 We love to stay at campsites every now and then because of the facilities, but prices like this really stretch the budget …. Wow - that does seem quite expensive for just a basic pitch (with no hookup) at this time of year. As due to the storms we recently ended up staying at a Premier Inn near Cambridge, and only paid a few quid more than that. Outrageous the cost of campsites in England in 2023 typically around £34pn with EHU. Just 4 weeks ago in France we were paying typically 18euros for the same deal. My message is head for France every time.

I hope you are feeling better Ken. 19th June for your last camp is a long time and when we watch these campervan van life channels, we think people are camping in them 24/7 As someone who nearly always goes to campsites, £36 is probably the going rate these days. I was paying about £30 but have paid up to £50. Hope you can find the perfect van.

That's why I spend most of my time at Camping & Caravanning Club DA meets or Temporary Holiday Sites with Teesside DA (other DAs are available!). £10 a night. Water, somewhere to empty the loo. With LPG for hot water, heating & fridge, and with solar power topping up the battery, what more do you need. Always a groan when people nip over to the THS from the VERY near Club Site then compare the fees they are paying. Often they join us a few days later. Admittedly in a caravan with its very decent washroom, rather than a camper van, but paying an extra £26 per NIGHT just to use a shower & toilet, when I already have one in the van means I'd really be paying the £26 for electric hook up! Way too much ...

How much ??? Here in SW France we rarely pay more that half that amount, that's with our caravan connected to electricity. On the other hand, having recently given our 'van solar charging possibilities this Summer we stayed on a number of non-electric CLs in southern England and we only paid £8 to £10 a night, so there are bargains out there. Good luck with the van search.

If it's of interest, the sites that we stayed on were: Upper Chancton Fm and Parkhurst Fm, both in W. Sussex, Green Lane Fm in E. Devon (but listed under Lyme Regis, Dorset) and Chapel Fm, Wadebridge, Cornwall. (loved Chapel Fm !)

Stephenson’s Rocket; always learn something new! What advice do you have for joining a motorway? I’ve had very little experience of driving on them. You looked so calm joining the carriageway. Can’t wait to see the vans. X

The key thing when joining any carriageway (not just motorways) is speed. It’s our job to either speed up or slow down to slot in safely with traffic already on the road. Accelerate briskly to near the speed limit but keep an eye out for people joining ahead of you. As you get faster your speed will begin to match vehicles coming from behind. Speed up or slow down as needed to slot in. Problems are caused by insufficient speed and thinking it’s there job to slow down or speed up. 👍

Hari OM I know established campsites need to maintain and pay rates and such, but I can't help feeling that many are a bit of a rip off. The concept of 'aires' is just starting to catch on here and if that could be ramped up, everyone would be the happier! YAM xx

After my travels in France in August I must say I'm very pleased with the low height of MY Nissan NV200. A lot of 2 meters barriers have come up everywhere! So I will stick to my small van. But each to their own!
