I rode this back in 2012? What a great trip this was, and i didn't record it. Soo happy to relive it here!! Throwing candy out to the kids who live along the tracks, freezing on top first thing in the morning, people walking along the top selling handmade foods, the last car derailed as usual, lol, i can go on and on. Thanks for posting this, great times!! I was surprised to hear they quit the roof riding, that was the best experience..

I agree about it being the best train ride ever. I have been all over the world by train but for sure this ride over the Devils Nose is for sure one of the best trips ever and well worth doing.

We left Alausi about 10am and took a slow trek down the pass stopping a few times for water and photos. I would say it took about 3hours from Alausi to the station at the bottom. Must have taken about 4hours to return to Alausi with all the photo stops.

Scary and awesome, I love steam trains.

@drhart905 I would say its about 150miles from Quito. If your at Quito its better to go to Riobamba and catch the train there. Then its a really long day out right to the bottom of the pass and back again. I heard recently that passengers are no longer allowed to travel on the roof of the train. That would spoil the whole journey as rooftop riding is all part of the fun. Go for it as its just magic.

@SteamerSA Its not so often they use the steam locos but im sure if you offer them a bit extra cash towards running the steam im sure they would welcome it. They have quite a few locos on the system and the whole line had just been rebuilt when I was there again last year. Biggest letdown I believe is that they no longer allow roof riding! Such a shame as that was the best part of the adventure.

I think they're looking for repeat customers. If you fall off the roof, you're dead, and that's not good business.

If you like riding the old steam trains, have you ridden the Cumbres & Toltec ? It's the longest, highest narrow-gauge still operating in the world, taking passengers from Chama, NM thru 2 mountain passes to Alamosa, CO.

Hi Adventurescot Hope you are having fun traveling around the world I am really excited to know you captured a clip of a beloved part of Ecuador our Train I'm a film student from Riobamba, a city of Ecuador and I'm doing a final project for one of my classes about documentaries. The documentary project is called "VIajeros en el tren de la historia" Me and my classmates were looking for video or picture Archives of the train in the past and your video is exactly what we are looking for. So we want to ask for your permission and acknowledge to use some part of the video to use on our documentary As I was saying to you this will be only a student film and there will not be any monetary compensation. The use of your content will help us a lot I look forward to reading your responses Moises Guevara

Hi Moisesguevara, yes for sure you can use this video clip for school projects or whatever you want. I have many photos of the trains and its locomotives and all. I can email you photos or video if you want. Just let me have an email or you can contact me on Facebook under Adventurescot. Cheers

@drhart905 If you can find any email contact with the railway I would appreciate it if you could forward their detailw to me. I am going there in March 2011 and am hoping to hire a train for the group but just cannot seem to make contact with the railway.

Do you know if one is still able to undertake this journey by steam?

Those blokes are on one helluva 'dome car'. Watch your step mate and try not to trip, eh, what? BTW: the last 30+ seconds of this vid are the most spectacular: frozen in time!
