This is an old video when we ran packs without bms. Nowadays, you just slap a bms on the cells and it's good to go. It will top balance your pack and you don't need to think about anything. If you have a configure of more than 1 in series than you will have to bottom balance. BMS can't reach back on the 2nd series because the BMS only has leads on the 1st series still have to set the parameters on the bms. You still need to set parameters on the solar charger and bms. It makes my life easier because if one fails to protect than the other is doing its job. Sometimes my epever will spike on the volts and won't shut off on high volts for a few seconds but, my bms will stop that in a flash.

Will, I'm just top balancing 4x 125Ah cells and I want to use effectively 100Ah at usable 12V system voltage (100A Daly 4S will of course be attached) in my overlander, with 2x100W solar on the roof. What voltages would you recommend? For the Victron MPPT and Orion I had in mind 14.2V absorption, adaptive, limited to 1hr, 6A tail current and 13.4V float. Victron BMV set to 100Ah capacity, 14.0V charged voltage and 5% tail current. But after watching your video I'm no longer sure to set the voltages that high ..

Will, how much of a voltage difference between cells can I still consider as fairly well balanced? I know you said we can just slap on a BMS but I've heard many say that is not enough if the voltage or state of charge of the cells are way off. I am planning to buy slightly used LiFePO4 batteries for a 12V 4S 100AH DIY portable battery bank and I want to be able to make the most of the batteries but I'm afraid I may end up with "unbalanced" cells from the seller. Thanks. Your videos have been very helpful for people like me who know little about these things and are trying to learn.

Thanks for a clear description of the benefits of bottom balancing and the risks associated with inexpensive BMS units. Many of us understand what we are doing, but for the noobies it is critically important that they get good information correctly presented - as you said, it is easy to get burned - these cells contain a lot of energy, which is why we use them...

The choice of top/bottom balancing also depends on the application. In my case, my system is designed for solar backup and the cells are kept at approximately 90%. Since no lithium based cell tolerates constant trickle charging, my controller tops off the battery bank once a week while the BMS top balances. Even though there is a +- 4 Ah cell variation across the 600Ah pack, the cells stay well matched. 24 hours after top off the 16 cells are within 4-6mV and from 48 hours until the next top off, they stay within 2mV. It has operated this way for over a year now. To avoid bottom voltage issues and to extend battery life, the BMS will disconnect the pack at 15-20% state of charge although I have not encountered this case yet. This system gives me 3 days to either get solar back (snow melts) or start the generator. I don't have to bite my nails hoping one of the cells doesn't under voltage. Peace of mind is my goal.

Excellent Will thankyou. I'm using cells for car audio sound quality build. Since they will never see low voltage and run around 14v, but your right, top balancing is most certainly the way to go, and again your right it is way better to bottom balance if at all possible

I tried to bottom balance my electric lawnmower. I am using used 18650 lithium ion cells and cycling them from 90% to 0% in one hour each week. So a much different situation than the solar you are talking about. The bottom balancing did not work for me because the self discharge is a little chaotic with the cells I have. So I need to balance the pack once a month. I don’t have any way to do that automatically when bottom balancing. Top balancing once a month is easy. I charge each cell to 4.10v and every once in a while a group will self discharge down to 4.04v which throws out the balance. So my experience is exactly what you said. The quality of the cells you have and how you use them will greatly change how you should deal with balancing. If I increase the size of my pack and only charged to 4.0 volts per cell it might not go out of balance.

Very insightful. Thanks for sharing. I use recycled 18650's to make my own batteries and this is a recurring thought for me. It was good to hear your thoughts on the matter. I do not use a Battery management system but I do use a batter monitoring device. It cost less than $20 but it displays the individual cell levels and the total battery voltage so if anything goes out of balance by too much then I can make adjustments as desired.

At about 4:30 you suggest that it is best to stay between 20 and 80 percent charge. That means the lifepo4 battery bank is only useing 60% of its capacity. Presumably this prolongs the life of the cells. What about in electric vehicles? Does charging a set of lifepo4 cells to 100% and then discharging it to 0% on a regular basis greatly affect its lifespan? Comparison maybe? In other words, just how badly am I hurting my lifepo4 cells in my car by doing full discharge cycling? The answer to this question helps folks decide on wether or not to use standard lithium cells or lifepo4 for their electric vehicle. Thanks for the great videos! :)

DUDE Will YOUR A MIND READER. I was contemplating sending my cells back. I got one that fits this video unfortunately. I'm currently custom programming my TS-45 to deal with this issue. I have been manually balancing with a load tester to scrub voltage during the day on one cell. No matter what i do it just charges WAAAYYY faster then the other 3 cells. Now i gotta babysit it and set the HVD to what you said as i've been regularly hitting 4.0V on this one cell. I'm having trouble discharging as im still testing and not using it to its fullest right now but the Victron LVD is simple to change with the bluetooth model. GREAT VID WILL I'M PULLING MY HAIR OUT until this vid. Might even scrap the cell and buy a new one to compensate the loss. Really want as much capacity as possible.

I think it depends on application w/out solar. For ex., junk cells used to intermittently power a fridge may be better off top balancing for fast charging. Junk cells used in a continuous manner seem better off bottom balancing to squeeze more safe power at low voltage.

Interesting, I'm using a Zeva BMS (from Australia) which top balances (by slowly draining cells that are higher voltage). The problem with bottom balancing is my battery doesn't get to the bottom very often, while I do usually get it charged up each day. The balancer only drains milliamps, so it needs to do it often. Pretty much always something needs balancing, and it's not always the same cell series. I do have my max charge voltage lower (thanks Victron) so as you say I'm not running it at full capacity. The Zeva BMS lets me configure what voltage it starts balancing. Right now my cells have a 0.03V difference and battery is 91% charged. One cell series 3.88V, the rest 3.90 or 3.91. So it's pretty subtle, but it's a big pack (6.5Kwh). My BMS is connected to a Gigavac contactor switch so if any cell series goes too high or too low, (or if the BMS fails) it disconnects the whole battery. It should never get into that state though, as it should usually be balanced, and a battery protect should turn disable the DC power out before then, and the inverter has it's own limits too. Note my pack is Lithium Ion (not LiFePO4) so in my case it's essential to keep things balanced or big fire could happen :)

Love your Videos. Question: when I use a bms on my lifepo4 battery how do I protect my victron mppt charger? When the bms cut the charging and the solar panels are still putting power, how do I protect my charger? Panels still on my mppt and the bms cut, it could damage my charger right? Cheers from Germany

Your solar charge controller will convert the power from your solar panels into heat. Your bms will only cut the charging not the connection between battery and charger, that's what on my head. Please enlighten me, that's also a question I want to ask.

Seeing you asked for what to talk about, I'd like your opinion on the Electrodacus chargers, they are only a little more expensive but have a bms included. The maker also believes in parallel for the panels and claims there is very little loss compared to mppt and says the transformers in them always need replacing eventually which makes his system come out in front in the long term...I'm very close to pulling the trigger on this or what you are recommending currently so keen to see your view.

I made a few videos trying to explain series battery and supercapacitor balancing. It really is super simple to understand but hard as hell to explain in a way to make sense to someone new to charging/discharging lol. I'm annoyed that lower priced chargers rarely let you adjust the charge voltage. It's always the max voltage for equal batteries so you have literally no safety margin. Then, the li ion batteries go from 100% to 90% and stay there really quickly unless you use them right away anyways.

Doesn’t matter as the battery’s BMS (well one of them, they are in parallel) shuts the Growatt down at 54.2. Manufacturer says to discharge and charge to full at 10 amps which I’ve done 3 times now with no improvement. These are LifePo4 chemistry batteries.

I have a question , if I change lifepo4 to 3.65 how long do I need to wait till it balance? I'm building 24v 8cell pack when parallel battery pack hits 3.65v I disconnect chage and check voltage tow cells in 3.64 and all other in 3.65 - grade A new cells (sorry about my English)

I have a few packs. Hundreds of dollars worth i made for less than half because i followed these simple guideline. No Bms. Only thing to add mentally get a gauge of your average commute. Build battery accordingly. If a 10AH will drain halfway to work and back in up to few days. BUILD A DOUBLE IF POSSIBLE 15 OR 20AH. Cost is issue BUT KEY because of larger size. You never drain it maybe half. BOTTOM LINE YOUR CELLS ARE. NEVER STRESSED. STAYING BALLANCED. DONT WIMP OUT ON AMPS

Why do you show a renogy charge controller and state you can't adjust the charge voltage? It's pretty easy with the computer software. Done mine many times....

Hi i have 4 x 210Ah Cells, 4S 12V. 2 x Cells at 3.33, 1 Cell at 3.25 and 1 Cell at 3.28. Maybe sound crazy, but is there a way to balance the cells by drawing current via a 3V Motor, to manually bring down each cell so they all have matching voltages, using a multi meter in the process. I have a Victron IP22 charger, so no good to top balance, and i don't want to buy another charger to top balance. The string will have a JBD BMS but I want to balance the cells before installing the BMS. Many thanks

bro can you make a video about mixing different brand of lifepo4 batteries in series ? like I have 12v 100ah plus another 12v 138ah and 12v 40ah batteries in series ?
@dylan-nguyen
@dylan-nguyen 3 жыл бұрын
Don’t do that you’ll effectively lose 100AH. In series you will get the least cell’s capacity.. so 36v 40AH

Makes perfect sense, except for one comment ... How do you know that cell has hit its top level or bottom level? What gizmo tells you this?

You look at the cell voltage. So the gizmo is a voltmeter...

Sorry for the noob question, but isn't the job of the BMS to manage each cell and to dynamically balance the whole pack? So if one cell reaches a higher or lower voltage compared to the rest, the BMS will just cut power to it or continue charging/discharging it longer, etc. Why do you need to top or bottom balance if you have a BMS?

This was back in the day when people ran systems without a bms. Especially the marine crowd. This is no longer an issue.

My problem is finding a BMS with built in bottom balancing because, as you said, I don't want to go to 100% SOC and many of them seem to balance at like 3.65v. Are there any BMSs with bluetooth where that balance point is configurable?

Do I need to balance my Lion Energy battery bank? I individually charged each battery (4) I haven't connected them together yet. I am running a 24V bank, 2 pairs of 12V batteries. Since the batteries have BMS, is it unnecessary for me to balance them? Will they do it on their own in time? I am probably over thinking this, but hoping you can help me out.

Does the inverter matter ? I want to use a 2000watt inverter and then ultimately install solar on my roof. I don’t want to buy the wrong inverter and then have to change it when I install solar. The controller etc does matter correct? They need to be solar oriented. Correct??? I am so confused 🤷‍♂️ Please reply. Thanks Will

STOKED - FOUND SOMEONE TO EXPLAIN ELECTRIC STUFF. My wife and I have lived on Maui for many years in Kihei - desert, but not as hot as LV (I grew up in KS so I've worked in 112-115 F) and are stretching out budget on Social Security in one of the priciest, most inflation prone areas of USA. I want to put together a modest solar setup - not on a roof, but on the ground per need, to charge my Dell 15" laptop, several iPhones and D-cell batteries for a small emergency fan. I'm a bed bound mostly invalid and spend most of my time in a back bedroom with poor ventilation. Home Owners association rules allow a room AC in living room only - so if electric goes out I'm dead meat without a fan of some sort. My forte' is concrete and dirtwork as a construction surveyor and former federal chief inspector and knew very little about electric until I discovered you! I've worked on two of the tallest buildings in the world in succession in Chicago, but never did much with home building other than layout some subdivisions. My experience is strictly major construction, interstate highways and the like. Techies like you tend to throw around a lot of acronyms. I figured out BMS as battery monitoring system, but continual acronym references becomes tedious and "cultish". I have great admiration for so much enthusiasm and diligence in one so young! Keep up the good work - I will be watching!
