I use 15 lbs. dumbbells at home to practice, allowing my swing to fall freely. This has helped me greatly to not only tune into what that feels like but also to help me program my neuro pathways to execute that movement each and every time without having to think about it. Thank you for all of the content. Your channel is helping me to become a better bowler.

Thanks for the advice! Have been struggling with this for years. I can do it in no step and 1 step drills but full approach it feels impossible. Will try next practice session.

That's where I am. When I isolate the feeling in a drill, I can do it all day. Full approach? Totally falls apart. Very frustrating.

Thanks JR for this great tip. Body language really makes a big difference. I started out with a 14lb ball as recommended by the shop but I thought the ball was too heavy for my hand which I thought was the reason why I couldn't get hand under ball so I ended-up getting a 2nd 12lb ball. Allowing the ball to fall during the swing allows the momentum of the ball and your hand to get back in position rather than to pull it down and then losing control. Reminds me of the pirate ship ride- once the boat levels out of it's pendulum swing, it's perfectly parallel back to the ground. Makes perfectly sense! I will try this tonight along with focusing to keep my upper body upright without any lean as well as allowing swing path of ball to be in line with my head. I think this will also fix my tendencies of my arm to go cross-body on release which I think I may also be releasing the ball too late. Too many parts/pieces to put together but after 3 months of bowling it's all starting to make sense now. I do have the yo-yo release now but my rev-rate is so slow. Another problem to fix another time.

One of the BEST coaches in the game! I have attended many PBA tournaments, both national and regional, and one of my very favorite victories of all was watching JR when a regional at Pinheads and his son was with him having the time of his life. It was a great day! Thank you JR for sharing this video as once again you are absolutely correct.

It was the last detail I feel hit home for me. Because I've notice, that as a lefty, the more I move right with my feet my body instinctually leans a little more forward which I feel allows me to get around it a little easier.

Why does spine tilt make a difference? Your hand is on top of the ball when it's 45 degrees behind you, but that should be true even if you're upright. What matters is only at the bottom of the swing, right?

Me 20 years ago: "I want to be a better swing dancer." My teachers when I was learning how to swing dance: "You need to bend your knees more, it looks better in the dance." Me: "I racked my knees taking all kinds of ground balls playing baseball as a teen and they don't bend easily anymore." Me now: "Bowling seems like a nice, low-impact sport I can do into old age. But I can't seem to master getting a lot of hook." This video: "You need to bend your knees more to get more hook." Me: "Dammit."

Highlighted a number of my faults in the video- thanks for the affirmation. A question- took a lesson a couple of years ago from USBC silver who had me uncock my hand at address (so fingers below the forearm line) but I don’t know what it was supposed to accomplish - maybe help stay behind it on the push away ? Have tried unsuccessfully to touch base with him again. Any idea what that move might do ? I am bowling better this year. Thanks !

hmmm. AJ johnson and darren tang and byron smith might be doing it wrong for so long. Marshall H might be wrong too?. You can lean as much as you want but you can't rotate the shoulder to the line. Please send this link to Simonsen, verper and packy. they're all wrong... careful how you heed advice.
Thanks for the tip JR! I drop the ball from the top of my swing. I have no issues with keeping my hand under the ball. My 2 cents for folks having this issue... use a lighter ball OR get to the gym and strengthen your arm from shoulder to wrist. Folks who think they can perform optimally w/o working out are mistaken. All the guys on tour are gym rats.
