No adventure would be complete without some lows, because if it were all highs, it would be called vacation. My Grandma used to say "You can't enjoy the sunshine without a little rain". My Dad would always say " Whatever it is your doing, if everyone is smiling, you're doing it right." You guys are doing it right.

Our 2016 Alaska RV trailer trip we had the following issues: 2 screws in the same rear truck tire near Chicken (had a Toyota tire warranty and received a new tire in Fairbanks Toyota), short in trailer brake wire (traced it to a bare wire as it exited the trailers axle tube), and last returning on the Alcan in the Yukon, a construction vehicle threw a rock thru my trailers side window...(patched it up in Whitehorse, and got a new window in Indiana at a RV surplus store ($45, vs $700 the manufacturer wanted...) all in all 110 days, 14k miles traveled really not bad.

I had a wife and daughter, daughter that age was wonderful. I see your daughter and think the joy y'all must have on adventures and she dressed for it. Grabbing her up is like a bundle and she is in there somewhere. Great memories for me. Pick up that bundle of puffy coat and a child inside. About that age, daughter had a ski suit, pink with flowers, she weighed about 45lbs wet. We were at top of mountain and she got scared off the lift, winds, I got to my knees and hugged her, explained only one way down from there, could hardly feel her body in the ski suit. She toughed it out, skied down the mountain and bragged about it for weeks. She would come to me and say "I was strong, wasn't I" and I would say "yes you were, I'm proud of you". Your daughter will gain such a bond with parents and perspective of life. I'm old, older now and often think about how things could have been. Near end, when y'all sitting and she tells her joke and Dad says "that good, been waiting to tell that haven't you" and she says "yeah". So good.

I par ooze a variety of adventure videos to see how peoples rigs fair. No matter what happens and what vehicle it is, there are generally a fair amount of viewers who like to put down arguments for or against the vehicle being driven. Along with other comments that are pretty unnecessary. It is refreshing to see your viewers giving so much support and optimism for this Episode. Keep enjoying life, keep finding the good in what you do. And your mechanical skills being used outside of a shop are rare to see that in depth repair being done. Most seem to bail wire it up as it were until it can be towed to a shop. My only constructive concern would be at about 17:04 it looked like you had your left hand between some things that if the support gave way, you would have been having 1 hand to fix things with later. Otherwise, nicely done! And since there are no viewers that had anything negative to say, I can leave here with a smile. As opposed to shaking my head. lol

First video and new subscriber. I don't have adequate words to compliment you on your outstanding production quality and content. That is one lucky little girl you have there. I read the credits. She already has quite the resume for a kindergartner. My parents took us camping all over the US and Canada. Wild places got into my DNA. I wish I could learn how to make those repairs. It fascinates me. I'm leaving in 2 weeks to go backpacking in wild places and live full time out of a van after selling my home, car and most earthly possessions. I miss nothing. I did the Dalton & Dempster in 2007 on my KTM 950, trip of a lifetime! Stayed in the hotel and remember seeing a sign at the exit to check under adjacent buildings for sleeping bears before exiting! Their were some crazy Aussi motorcyclist's that insisted on skinny dipping in Prudhoe Bay!

I wrote up a whole post about aftermarket parts and when "expensive, top quality" parts are worth it...but at 17:25 in...I hope ICON shipped you that stuff for free...otherwise you need to put them on blast...that's BS. I know that's not your style...you're letting the setup/install/conditions/outcome speak for themselves and letting people draw their own conclusions. But let me as a guy who buys cheap...has had cheap break(and not break)...I would be very, very disappointed to pay ICON prices and have a mount break like that. I'm sure it's not your intention...but this video has definitely convinced me never buy anything from ICON...not that I was in danger of it... I'm 245K miles on stock Toyota AHC...if I spend thousands of dollars, it's going to be to repair that...
@LifestyleOverland5 жыл бұрын
I'm really neutral on this. You can always make parts stronger, true. But I also know the abuse I've put it through so I can't complain too much. Seems like the cut-out for the bolt just took too much meat in my opinion, but it's a tight space to work with. 88,000 hard miles isn't too shabby. And no, they didn't give it to us for free. After I explained who we were (I HATE playing that card but it was going to be expensive) and told them how many people we've sent their way, they gave me $10 off, LOL. Oh well. I still love the suspension.
@maxst25 жыл бұрын
Only way to make that a better part is to have it cnc from billet. Would have likely tripled the cost of just that one part, likely more.
@davec.31985 жыл бұрын
A part like that should be forged, not billet or cast. It looked like it was cast. It looks like cast aluminium, which blows my mind. It could also have been over tightening the hardware. Any high grade steel bolt could shear an AL piece clear off.
@tedcarl53825 жыл бұрын

Aluminum like any other metal has a stress memory and 6061 aluminum alloy contains less zinc than 7075 Aluminum meaning that while 6061 doesn't boast the same high strength and stress resistance as 7075. Perhaps ICON need to reconsider and make the top support plate out of 7075 which is more resistant to stress fractures/high & low frequency. Great video Cheers 🍻

Very enlightening video about ICON, their designs, engineering and practices.... your outlook on the situation and your comments here are very well handled... the overlanding community likely wouldn't have seen the same info from the guys over @ the XO channel so I guess it's good for us you're not sponsored by ICON.

I'm really neutral on this. You can always make parts stronger, true. But I also know the abuse I've put it through so I can't complain too much. Seems like the cut-out for the bolt just took too much meat in my opinion, but it's a tight space to work with. 88,000 hard miles isn't too shabby. I really like the fact we're sponsored by our viewers which helps with impartiality on things like this. That being said, I would buy Icon all over again even after this. After 88k with about 30% of that offroad and 60% on New Mexico roads (terrible) I'm satisfied.

@@LifestyleOverland You really didn't need to copy/paste that reply to me too, I saw it the other 80 times you pasted it. :)

What pressure do you air down to for gravel roads?

Bummer about the mounts, but seriously can't complain too much given the abuse y'all have put her through. 88,000 miles is pretty good in my estimation. All the desert, rocks, & wilderness up to now didn't break it. Your daughter is the cutest! "It's lego day" put an ear to ear grin on my face! :-D

That's our feeling on it as well. She makes her daddy proud with her Lego passion! They're not the greatest travel toy but worth it!
