This was life in England in the early 80s for the majority of people. It was absolutely bleak and grim, with massive unemployment rates, urban decay, housing problems, gang violence and race riots. This song captures the mood of the time perfectly

The context of this song is key, you're spot on Jannet. Massive unemployment, you couldn't go out on a weekend without getting into a fight, skinheads everywhere and the likes of the National Front and BNP. City centres were no go areas and it was a mess. The reason I prefer the Specials more than the likes of Madness and Bad Manners is because of the politics that Dammers wrote about. Early UB40 of this time were equally as good, which is a real compliment.

@@karmannghiaman1041 Madness had their place, they are a great group. However, they didn't capture the reality of what life was life in the UK, back in the '70' and '80's. The Specials did. They encapsulated everything that was wrong with our country back then. It was bleak, grim, mass racism, mass unemployment, closures everywhere, City centres became no go areas. Police bruatility, club closures. Empty factories, and buildings standing like silent sentinels. This was our life back then in our country, [ the UK].

Stan, I love the way you do your reaction, you play the whole song, then give your comments. There is nothing so annoying than the reactionaries who play 2 minutes then talk rubbish, then play some more and talk more rubbish and say something meaningful at the end. A song is a story. A work of art. Listen to it all, then pass judgement.

Got this album the day it was released in the US. The Specials were so great, blew my young mind. Thank you for your reactions, you help me remember my youth. It is frustrating how relevant this song still is after almost 50 years.

This was very timely. The lead singer of "The Specials" just perished today. Or, yesterday maybe. They were about the best known Ska band in England, and perhaps beyond. For more, "A message to you Rudy" is a good one. It got some radio airplay.

Thank you so much for saying lovely things about Terry. I just heard this brilliant song was about the riots of the 80’s. I lived near the Brixton riots. Very scary. I still can’t get over his death. 😢😢

Just found out through reading this that Terry Hall, my favourite songwriter (after myself and Aimee Mann) has died. I do hope he saw the light like he sang in 1997 as I seriously really want to meet him in heaven. This guy invented The Colour Field = the Best most talented band that has ever existed after Aimee mann's musicians. (and myself) Their 1st album 'Virgins And Philistines' is my 3rd favourite album of All time. I send my deepest condolences to Terry's family and may God be with them protecting them always. Great review of a Really Great song which is featured on my album. Sorry this is not so much about the review but ... I Love you Terry Hall, we All did and will miss you greatly from this failing but 'beautiful' earth that the one 'true' God created.♥✝

Just came across your channel as I was looking back at the Specials due to Terry Hall's passing . I remember this track when it first came out in 1981 ,I was 20 yrs old at the time and was hooked on the specials from that day . Other bands worth checking out are . Madness . The English Beat . Selecter And Bad manners . All British ska bands of the time . Also check out UB40 (Reggae)

I enjoyed your enthusiasm; I'd have loved to hear a bit more about what you made of this specific song, eg the lyrics, which are brilliantly concise and full of anger and despair; and the music, which evokes the theme of a ghost town so cleverly. To me this is one of the greatest pop singles ever.

I came to see if this was a cover of Adam Lambert's Ghost Town. Definitely not! You should check it out especially the version of him singing it with Queen at Rock in Rio. Brian May really adds a rocking guitar to the dance track.
