Same here a decade later than you. This is not controversial, it is America. An "ever perfect union". This union may never be perfect, but generation after generation has shown that it can always be perfected. As American as America the Beautiful (Ray Charles), The Star Spangled Banner (Whitney Houston), The Battle Hymn of the Republic. God Bless America!

Beautiful. As a white male, I sang this song in my public junior high school choir back in the early seventies. It was a staple in our repertoire, which included 'The Battle Hymn of the Republic,' the 'Hallelujah Chorus,' and 'Gloria in Excelsis Deo.' We toured with these songs, and none of it was considered controversial then. It’s hard to grasp how it could be seen differently now.

I sang a version of Hark the Herald Angels Sing in a UU choir about a month ago. It's in F# and has tenors and basses, but it has a similar ending to this, interestingly. It's not a full verse with descant, but rather, the F#5 comes in at the very end, and it's only the first verse.
