Hi Justin, I came across your channel and I have been loving your videos! Thank you for sharing! I recently made the decision to change my major from dental hygiene to OCS PT, why? well, I'm very into fitness and love anything to do with human anatomy and would love to dive deeper into this major. I am enrolled in community school working towards getting into dental school, but as I mentioned, I have grown an interest in PT! I would appreciate it if you can give any advice on what necessary steps to take to become an OCS PT? :) Hope to hear from you soon, Thank you! Cristina Deras.
@drjustinleedpt3 жыл бұрын
Both professions are great, but of course I am more supportive of being a PT. The difference in schooling is a lot more to become a OCS PT tho. In order to become a PT, you need to have a bachelors degree (4-6 years), and graduate from a DPT program (2-3 years). Then after you finish your DPT, you need to do a residency for 1 year and then take the certification program. You can also bypass the residency and start working as a PT, but you need to accumulate like 2000 hours (or something like that) of outpatient ortho clinical hours before you are eligible to take the certification exam. Hope that helps!

Now that I'm about to start PT school in July, I'm excited to help other runners on their own journeys in a few years. With that said, I think a sports specialty will help me with that.

I’ve been interested in PT since I was 15-16 when I had to go to PT for my knee. The process of it was fascinating because it was to treat patients and motivate them. I had an injury during track and couldn’t run for the rest of my hs years. I’ve always loved sports, motivating people, and even love kids. I’ve been afraid to take a step forward because idk if this was right for me. What if I end up not enjoying PT? I’ve also let my anxiety get the best of me. Today, I’m 23 and I’m gonna finally major in sports medicine. Your video has brought me clarity and I appreciate you so much. I haven’t began school yet and wanted to know what’s the best way to go about it without falling into so much dept or even applying for the wrong school/classes?

Ever since then I hav wanted to help people the way I was helped and get athletes back on the field. You mentioned four different certifications that sports PT’s can, I think I know one for sure which is the CSCS through NSCA. I was wondering if you could shed some light of the was the other three are, thank you for the amazing videos as always!

I’m interested in sports physical therapy. I live in NYC and have been very indecisive on the career choice because I fear that the one I choose would not be to my liking and I don’t want to be stuck in a career that I don’t like. I want a mix of passion and great money. My career choices are Nurse Practitioner, Registered Dietitian, and Physical Therapy. Since I was 15 when I first started lifting weights (fell in love) I’ve been interested in fitness, health and nutrition and wanted to incorporate it all into a career and have my own private practice/business. Registered Dietitian is low pay and high college debt since by the time I finish my bachelors and start internship I would have to go back to get my masters (2024 mandatory to have masters in nutrition before going for internship and sit for exam) and that’s just not worth all the debt since the salary is 50-70k Nurse Practitioner is interesting but I’m having difficulty finding a way to incorporate nutrition, lifting weights and health into it. Struggle is real when I’m so indecisive 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️😭😭
@drjustinleedpt4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and journey mark! I appreciate you being vulnerable and posting your thought progress. I think if you really want to focus on nutrition and create meal plans for people, then the only legal way you can do that is through RD. (A lot of fitness people out there will give customized meal plans for people and that’s absolutely wrong - please don’t be like one of those people.) If fitness is a big part of your life and you really want to preach exercise, PT is going to be your best way to go. But.. like you mentioned, the debt and income ratio is tough because it’s a lot of money for school. But.... a lot of PTs end up starting their own practice because you’ll be well equipped to have authority and impact due to your doctorate degree. As far a NP, it’s a good paying job for the debt, but their practice is medicine. Idk if that’s an area you want to get into. Of course you can educate with utilizing proper nutrition and exercise but that won’t be your main source of treatment options unlike PT or RD
