Liftgate Strut Replacement

This is EASY! When your liftgate wont stay open, you can replace the liftgate strut. I show the simple instructions on how to make this replacement, removing the old and inserting the new strut. Many cars only require that the right strut be replaced. Some older model cars and not automatic lift, will need both struts replaced. Thank you for the ladder tip. I was worried about my broom handle getting knocked out of place. It's amazing how heavy the lift gates are. They're pretty dangerous

What about the “power” side? Mine leaked & the end on the lift gate rusted & ball end detached!

My 2012 SRX was doing exactly what your Liftgate was. I was almost decapitated at Kroger the first time it happened. I replaced the strut that you showed, but now it will only open about a foot, then slams shut. If I can muster the strength to open it (I’m an old lady), it will hold in place. Any ideas on what could be the problem now. The strut that I bought was as heavy duty as the one I replaced (made in Mexico, not China) The first one I bought was pretty flimsy and way too long (made in China). I was able to return it.

Coming in late. I am replacing both struts because one is electronic. This is a 2017 chevy equniox. It was recommended to replace both.

Once you find out how easy it is, you may consider replacing one and see if that does the job before putting in the second one but because it is cheap enough to does make sense

@@DIYHGP yea the dealership recommended both, but only because the issues isn’t fully transparent as to whether BOTH are defective or just one. Total cost for 2017 struts as just under 400$ for reference.

I’m afraid it’s typical that a dealer can’t tell you which one it is so they want to charge you more by replacing both of them

@@DIYHGP Truth! In this case, I wasn’t paying for it but it is a great idea to replace one (the cheaper right strut) first as you mentioned. What I couldn’t tell was if it was the basic strut failing, or if the electronic was failing and doing all the heavy lifting
