Lifting a 28 Foot Log Ridge Beam and Purlins onto My Cabin Alone in the Wilderness, Ep 18

My Self Reliance

Күн бұрын

Continuing my off-grid log cabin build Alone in the Canadian wilderness, I install a temporary loft floor to use as a working platform while building the roof of the cabin. Using chainfall hoists hung from cables strung between the trees, I lift three 28 foot purlins and a ridge beam into place, weighing several hundred pounds each. I frame the gable ends with milled logs and 2" lumber, leaving notches for the logs to fall into place. Hoisting the logs and sliding them into the notches was hard work and took several hours each, but it worked exactly how I had hoped.
While I work on the roof, I grill sausages and steaks on the campfire overlooking the meadow in front of the cabin. Cali, my golden retriever, watches me work and chases squirrels and chipmunks between rounds of fetch. To cool off, we go for a long walk along the cobblestone beaches and exposed Canadian Shield bedrock along the shores of Georgian Bay. Wild food is abundant so we snack on raspberries, sour cherries, blueberries, cranberries, winterberries, serviceberries, fireweed and St. John's Wort. Wild food, fish and home grown fruit and vegetables are everywhere now so I'm harvesting and storing daily, including my first tomatoes of the season from the greenhouse by the cabin.
Later in the week, my dog spends the day in my red cedar and canvas canoe out on the water with my friend Nate and I while we explore a new lake, catch fresh fish and fry it on a campfire on a beautiful island. Perch and bass are plentiful in this small lake so after a tasty shore lunch, I take a few back to the cabin for the solar powered freezer in the cellar. Cali practices her deep water dives and swims after her frisbee for hours, always wanting one more retrieve.
Back at the cabin, I build a wood mitre box and saw small trees into 45 degree corner braces for the log posts, beam and purlins to keep the cabin roof from racking. With a solid roof structure now in place, I start installing the first roof rafters, an exciting process as I can now see the final structure of the cabin and within days, the roof will be complete enough to keep the cabin interior dry.
In the next video, I'll be working on those rafters, but I'll also be taking a few days off to go on a backcountry canoe trip with my daughter Emily. Tune in to her channel to see her perspective on the trip as well as to see what other projects she's working on. / @emilyaisling

There are those sounds, those frequencies that are so appealing to the ear and the spirit. Sounds like the wind in the trees, a rushing stream, the water lapping the shore or a crackling camp fire. Only to name a few. I wish to add another Lovely sound to this list. Following you along this journey Shawn, from the first axe cut, shovel full of dirt and the first nail driven, that “THUD” of the ridge log was as sweet as maple sugar! Kind Thanks and Many Blessings with Love, Light, Peace and Joy of Being to You and your Family! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania

Shawn is a source of inspiration for all those who would like to leave the urban chaos, their work, stressful commitments, but cannot do it, or do not have the courage. I know that now I will not be able to do it anymore, it takes health, determination, courage, but also basic knowledge on how to survive, and knowing how to give up many things taken for granted. But I hope to at least be able to live in the countryside soon, even if close to civilization.

So good to see Cali cooling off in the water with these high temp's. I have had to resort to adding ice to the water bowls about every hour to keep the kids(puppies) cool when they want to be outside (they can come in and go out as they want). Love the progress on the cottage. I was thinking early this year that there was no way you were going to have a roof done by winter, but as I have seen over the last 4 or so years, you always get things done. Good job and great videos.

@@IRIR-oy3jo I hated that stupid show (Chuck Norris). It's Batman and Robin, but I kind of, sort of, get the idea.

Ah! kicking back and chilling out to an hour of My Self Reliance it just doesn't get any better🥳 and as always excellent work on the cabin, she's coming along nicely, just one worry though, is it me, or is Callie getting a little chubby? health wise I'd keep an eye on that. Thanks as always Shawn🤩

Hey Shawn, she's coming together, I can tell this is going to be a beautiful cabin and definitely bigger than the last one, I can't wait to see the final product!! Lot's of fun watching you and Cali build the cabin. I do think you need to give Cali a break though, it's obvious she's doing all the heavy lifting, poor doggie!! 🤣

The cabin is coming along nicely! I can hardly wait to see it dried in! One thing I have often wondered is, do you have someone there with you, for safety’s sake when you are hoisting those outrageously heavy logs into place? I shudder to think how tragic it could be, if something were to even slightly go wrong…especially, if you were out there working all alone.

@@pissoff234 No, it is a legit question. This time the title does say alone though. I know his daughter is often up there because you see her in her videos. I worry too but he is a master at rigging things to hoist and maneuver so I figured he has it covered.

I see that you have built your own cabin? I’ll have to check out some of your videos, it looks like you have built yourself a nice cabin. May I ask where are you from or at least where is your cabin located? It’s good to see people work hard for what they want and to see them exceed in their lives.

Thanks for fantastic quality content, Shawn. Question: how did you determine what weight the purlins and ridge beam could handle and thus what additional support was needed? Additionally, how do you know how much those rafters can offer in additional load?
