Great video Patrick. If it wasn't for you i would have never known about Light Painting. After watching quite a few of your video's I was wanting to know how this technique was obtained, and now you have produced a video explaining just this. Great valuable information and super tips on how to get these amazing shots. Thank you. 👍😃👍👍👍👍👍👍

Hi Fran as I take so many pictures in tunnels I thought a vidio on how I do it would be interesting, another vidio in December, same place but a bit more " firey ". Thanks Pat

That old tunnel looks in great condition and considering the effort it took to build it, it is a shame that it probably will never be used again. There are many others like it. I worked on the railways and there are much, much worse tunnels that are in use. Some are so wet that they have curved corrugated iron around the ceiling and walls to direct the running water into drainage channels at the sides. Some of these have many repairs to brickwork. Others have been 'Shotcreted' to make them safe. Canal tunnels are sometimes worse because they are smaller and obviously permanently damp.

Good video Pat. We used to light paint using our flash guns leaving the camera on B (Bulb or Brief). The results were dodgy to say the least. Your technique has won me over. I'll get one of these led lamps or make one from ebay bits. It doesn't have to look good but it does need to be waterproof. I really like your videos.

Hello Patrick, I'm surprised that I have never seen your channel before as I spend a lot of time on KZbin mainly looking at camping video's. That's how I found you and now I'm at the light painting video demo after watching a couple of railway tunnel explorations which included light painted shots. As a novice type of photographer, I'm always interested by tutorials given on-line by people such as yourself. I am wondering if a different torch, maybe more illuminating (literally) for this kind of photography?) I'm thinking maybe an LED torch with variable focus and power? I will not mention the brand here, but it begins with LED.......I'm really enjoying your video's and am now going back to watch some more on this very wet Saturday evening. Keep them coming. I'm pleased your health has got better.
@patrickdickinson6492
@patrickdickinson6492 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Alan basically any powerful LED torch should do, for drains not so powerful but the railway tunnels just soak up the light, I think my Nightstar Panther is about 1500 lumens, variable beam would also be useful not that mine is, thanks Pat

Have loved all your Light Painting videos, and I bet it must have taken hours to shoot this video. I notice someone has said about 'post production' etc personally I hate all that tomfoolery on a computer....I see folks doing all sorts of 'clever' stuff, to me it never looks as good as an 'original' photo to my eyes at least. Looking forward to Part II. Oh, anyone that has been in 'proper dark' places would never question carrying 2,3, or 4 torches....never take just the one....it will eventually let you down. great vid. good tips. (in case you're not already aware) if you shoot RAW (or RAW+JPEG) on your camera you can get more control of your images. Fascinating stuff. Thanks for sharing your tips, Pat. There are three 30 mile long tunnels not far from me, but getting into them is a problem, due to the 20 foot high fence and the armed Police... and the Eurostar trains thundering through. ;o) Used to be able to get in to the 1880 channel tunnel workings, but I hear that there have been roof falls in recent times. It was always very wet and slippery down there, and torches weren't what they are now. All the best, mate. Take care down those holes.

Fantastic demonstration mate. Have you ever experimented with colour? Perhaps a lantern that could give different coloured light, or just place thin coloured plastic over the beam? Also, before setting off into the tunnel, do you tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back? Just in case you have an accident? Thanks for the video. Really interesting.

Yes so many ways to experiment, like you say different colors and light sources. Usually let someone know, but feel very safe in the tunnels, always have a plan B and sometimes C, all the best Pat

A really interesting video Pat, I recently tried this in a cave and got ok results but I wish I had watched your video first. I noticed a comment you made on Andrew Beauvers video about you thinking of using a go pro in the future. I have just put a video up called walking in the snow, I used a go pro 7 and external mic if it’s any help to you making a choice. All the best. Regards James.

Patrick Dickinson Check out the Windy wild camp video to see how the mic copes in extremely high winds, I also put a woman’s ankle tight over the top of the dead cat and it’s works very well. There are a few other tricks to make it work, so give me a shout if you need some more information. Cheers Pat

Absolutely brilliant Pat. I really enjoy your videos. I have a question about focussing. Do you manually focus on a small lit patch of the tunnel first ? Is that how you do it ?
@patrickdickinson6492
@patrickdickinson6492 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin with the light painting as on this vidio using a wide angle lense set at 10 mm and a high apature of f 8 to f 12 the depth of field is so great literally everything will be in focus. I set the focus to infinity and turn it back just a little and everything seems to be in focus. I,am going to do a similar vidio next few weeks using flash in same location were focussing is more important and yes I pre focus on a lit up spot using auto focus then camera back to manual with focus fixed on that spot, as you mentioned. Anticipating your new vidio very soon, all the best Pat

Hi Dave yes great little place to spend a day messing with my camera, the torches, which there are many different ones for sale, are a night searcher, Panther, with 1500 lumen beam, great for big railway tunnels and my smaller one with rechargeable D cells is a Ledlenser P17, not as bright but great for drains and culverts and a back up, all the best Pat
