Cyprus lacks big fish. Little ones are in abundance - many different species. If you take a mask and swim near rocks - you will be amazed. Not like in Carribean though. In fresh water reservours you can catch big carps, zander and telapia. But you need a license - 35 euro per year.
@DevonLerfer11 ай бұрын
@@SergeiGridnevskii I really enjoyed snorkeling near to our hotel, there was lots of life around the rocks but as you say, nothing big although I did see some big mahi mahi attacking a shoal of fish on the north east coast and had some follows from some slightly more substantial looking fish. I'm back in October so hoping to try some of the freshwater fishing 🤞🎣
@SergeiGridnevskii11 ай бұрын
@@DevonLerfer to catch a big one in the sea you can have 2 options: - go to a fish trip on a boat with local captain. I had a big tuna fish 1 km off the shore of Agia Napa from the depth of 500 meters. - wait until a great storm and go to Limassol where they have a fishing farm near the port. Waves tear down nets on the farm and big fish swims to the beach. You can get 10-20 kilos of fish in 1 hour.

you did well to find that pier, a very nice spot . I found the pathos end of Cyrpus a bit barren compared to the Ayia napa end . Apparently, something to do with the alkaline ( or acid, can't remember which ) make up of the particular volcanic rock that is at the cost line . While the water is crystal clear there is a definite lack of weed etc , and the fish seem a bit hard to find . However, what a lovely place to chuck a few lures around for some species Im off to the Ayia Napa end in a day with all my light stuff . I have to say, I did make it to a deep harbor spot at the Pathos end and got two good follows on big metals from a barracuda and a fast round fish, both nice sizes. Deep water seems the way.
@DevonLerfer10 ай бұрын
I was lucky to have a tip off about that pier, it made for a nice change of scenery and a good bit of grouper action! I'd actually heard it was the other way round and the light rock fishing at least is better at the Paphos end of the island, but who knows 😅 that said, I found fishing with metals and other hard lures tough going, but there was plenty of variety close in and I managed 21 species in total in the end. I'm back again in October so hoping my first trip will provide some useful experience this time around 🤞 hope you have an enjoyable trip 👍🎣

What bait and set up should I use for fishing from rocks? I tried lure fishing last summer around Coral Bay, St Georges and Latchi and didn't even see a fish, never mind catch one.
@DevonLerfer8 ай бұрын
I'd suggest scaling down. There are loads of species right on close amongst the rocks. Clear or natural coloured lures worked best for me. If all else fails, gulp isome will do it 👍
@andygreen277510 ай бұрын
just a note, i have had some great fun species hunting in Cyprus in real shallow water under the rocks. By that, I mean from six inches to a couple of feet . Putting a small hook and weight with small bits of whatever, squid or prawn (prawn was best ) and trying my best to let the bait wash under rocks.So many little fish under the rocks,alos nice small morays, so shallow your walking in between them. A really fun bit of species hunting, loads of strange bottom fish you don't normally get on the jellies.

So little grouper. I live here in Cyprus and swim most days 50 or 200 meters at sea at never seen and fish bigger than my hand. It’s quite different than South Carolina where I am from as there are trout and flounder and further out Spanish and king mackerel. I guess the reason for this is there are no nutrients in the sea, which is why the water is so blue, and no current, like the Gulf Stream. Notice there are no birds here either. And most fish sold the the market are farmed in floating pens. There are large grouper but 20 km or so out. Maybe they should sink some ships here to build reefs.
@DevonLerfer7 ай бұрын
That's an interesting theory, it did seem there was a lack of fish of any size apart from a fleeting glimpse of some mahi mahi which were hunting in close to shore on the north west coast. It does seem that there are a lot of anglers catching and keeping all the small fish they catch too, perhaps they just never get the chance to get big in those places?
@ThomasMann856437 ай бұрын
@@DevonLerfer Hi. What's remarkable is look at the bait those anglers use. They use crumbled up meal of some kind that you form into a ball and stick on the hook, the kind we would use in a fresh water pond in the USA (if you did not have worms). Yes I find it shocking that they keep these tiny fish. Spear fishermen too get fish, but they are always so small. Notice too there are not Bertram and Hatteras and other sport fishing boats in the marinas here. As for what you think, I believe it a myth to blame any of this on overfishing. I mean look around, we don't even have fishing fleets. Instead you see these maybe 6-8 meter boats that go our and put oat floating drift nets. They put them at night and then pick them up in the morning. There's no purse seiners or shrimp boats dragging the bottom. Never seen any long liner vessels here either.
