Great video and a good balance between the technical and artistical sides. Would love more of these videos where you talk about the basics and how we can apply it in 3D. I guess it is time to re-visit old projects!

I love this stuff! This makes a lot of sense. It's nice to understand the basics first and makes me rethink every step i do.. which brings a lot of questions.. What is the planning for the future lessons? Will we go more and more into the 3D side or still switch between software? Because now i want to know how to work with colored lights and hdri's (guess that is a big topic from irl to toning in PS to 3D). And when to use which kind of 3D lights haha. Got a lot of questions but i'm sure ill see the the topics in your future videos! Can't wait for more!

We'll go more into 3D and Compositing, the other software I use as a comparison to show other features. I'll do more videos with the colored lights etc. Shoot the questions and I'll try to answer them! Thanks for the comment!

G., a different smile shows up when one starts talking about a passion, and you are clarely super happy to start showing some cg lighting! haha I found this video super useful, as a photographer is nice for me to translate this knowledge to CG. So I'm glad that your are teaching from this point of view. I'm looking forward to more lighting and lookdev videos! By the way, I think you haven't seen, but I replied your comment on the color management part 1 video, let me know what you think about it! Cheers!

Ahaha your comment made me laugh! It might seem in the videos I am too serious, but I am not in real life...quite the opposite :D I enjoy doing this stuff, but the "boring" technical stuff is really important. I guess when I don't have to look always in the camera and I look at the monitor I show more about how I am :D Glad the video was useful and interesting, I will of course make more! Thanks for your comment! G.

Since you seem to be interested in these topics it'd be great to see someone with visibility talk about HCL color model. It's Lab but with an adjustment for how we see chroma, i.e. green is brighter to a human eye even if value is the same. It's a shame few programs use practical color pickers. Photoshop for example, pffft.

Great explanation sir , would love to see your take when we have textures mapped in light, i mean do you calibrate the image expossure in nuke or try find better value in maya ? Keep up the great material ! Cheers !

Maya + Arnold is a great choice, they have the most "complete" spotlight and area light IMO. What CPU are you running? Arnold 5 IPR is pretty damn fast no my Threadripper 1950x

Yes, I think Maya gained a lot of points now that it has a proper render engine :D Running it on an i7 4770K with 32GB Ram, nothing special really. The Threadripper is in my plans, too! Thanks for commenting!

Really worthwhile lesson Giuseppe, thanks for making it. With regards to the 18% base exposure value in a 3D scene, how relevant is this if you are rendering car paint or something else that's reflective? Actually, as you ask viewers what they would like to see in your future videos, I'd be very interested in what you have to say about rendering car paint if you have knowledge you can share on this subject. Thanks again!

Thanks for your comment! I will definitely make a video on car paint since it seems so popular a subject! The exposure rules don't change, no matter what your subject is. But lighting reflective surfaces (or dark specular surfaces in general) is different than the rest. That's also why taking portrait pictures of people with dark skin is more challenging in photography, since you have to use modifiers reflections to reveal the forms, and not much the light values. Will explain more of that in a future video!

Thanks for replying. I'm really looking forward to your insight on this subject. I know just what you mean about using reflection to define the form of darker specular surfaces, as shadows aren't particularly effective in bringing out detail yet reflections used sparingly are. And I've found the opposite applies when lighting lighter specular surfaces, such as very light coloured car paint, where shadowing has a little more strength and reflection less so. I've found getting the balance between shadow and reflection challenging, not just technically but also creatively. Can't wait to hear what you have to say about it all. Cheers!
