Hello again friends!! This week we’re diving into all things lamps & lighting & comfy vibes. A thoughtful consideration of lighting can seriously make or break a space and might be exactly what your interior is missing so sit down, get cozy, and let’s chat about it :)
In this vid I run through my general conceptual approach to lighting in interior design & architecture, things to consider in your lighting plan, color temperature & colored lamps, and finally some design icks (lighting edition): lamps w unnecessary ornament, flush mount boob lights, exposed light bulbs, and last but not least, exposed LED strips 🌟
Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!! Love u

No no no this edting style is literally perfect, don't change it. The issue with other videos in this category is that they NEVER show enough examples while talking and it always annoys me. We are here to learn visually. You're the first creator who actually shows plenty of examples, which makes everything you say easier to digest.

I am not a design nerd, but I am someone who loves learning. I recently bought a house and have been trying to be thoughtful about how to furnish it. My mind has been overwhelmed by all the things to learn about this field that I’ve never spent time thinking about before. I’m finding it hard to make much progress in turning this house into a desirable space because of all the things to consider (and all the things that I don’t know to consider!). I guess that’s why there are professionals called Interior Designers. Anyway, just letting you know that there are also design neophytes here watching and learning. If you think you’re sharing basic information that you assume someone listening might already know, assume the opposite! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

You really helped me understand how to thoughtfully design my ambient lighting. I had been saving images of things I’d seen elsewhere but you were able to EXPLAIN why those designers made the choices they did (eg. ceiling lights placed close to the edge of the walls so that they light the walls rather than spaced all over). THANK YOU!

Honestly the content of your videos is so good that you only need to worry about increasing production quality if it’s something you would find fun. Some KZbinrs need to rely on editing more if their content is lacking slightly but you are so engaging as is and your takes and explanations are so good that you really don’t need to change the way you present or edit your videos. It’s kind of refreshing and relaxing to watch. They are honestly so high quality already like your standards must be high.

Loving the sober and theoretical approach in these videos. I have one suggestion for a topic. I really miss an advanced video on color theory for painting walls. Like, 1) wall direction and hue, 2) brightness of rooms and recommended LRV and chroma of paint, 3) how to find colors that really 'pop' next to each other for painting adjacent rooms. If you make a video on that you will be making something truly unique that no one else is covering. But regardless I will keep following the channel :)

I love this video so much! You remind me of me! I feel like I've been a lone and lonely voice in abhorring overhead lighting and needing to have SO many light sources in every room, and caring so deeply about lighting in general! I look forward to being a part of your community. BTW, I'm also very sensitive to the temperature of the light in the room and find that it really matters whether the bulbs are warm vs cool, and that what is appealing definitely changes with the time of day. I've been so grateful to find that it's now possible to buy bulbs with adjustable temperature as well as adjustable brightness. And that newer ones are easier to use and don't involve yet another soul killing remote!

Lemme tell you why your video was great and doesn't need to change. It's the same thing I said to my gf when I sent this to her in the middle of watching because it was too good to wait. You have all the example images scrolling right next to you as you spoke! Dunno if that's what you do in your other vids as I'm presently learning how to light my space and this the first I've seen of you. I've seen a lot about color temp and I understand about task, directional, accent, etc but I hadn't heard "as many light sources as possible." That got me thinking differently. I'm also not a fan of seeing a bulb and loved the bit about overly ornate lighting. Changing up my lighting is what got me referring to my apartment as my "space," and that shift in mindset has been amazing. Thank you for sharing!!

Pot lights to the side. Blew me away! I bought an MCM house, the seller had installed pot lights everywhere--right down the middle. It's hideous. Hideous! I knew pots looked better another way but I never could put my finger on how museums achieved it. Mystery solved! My jaw hit the floor when I took in the beautiful look of POT lights washing the walls. I am thrilled. I can't wait to take them out, repair the ceilings, and reinstall them along the perimeter. I love the look! Many thanks for enlightening me. Literally. I like your background in this vid. Feels true to u. The experience was soothing. I think if u can wear the mic (clipped on like the news anchors) u will realize an increased comfort of having both hands free. Thanks also for keeping the images onscreen longer. And u could make it even longer. It take time to absorb images. The landscape view of u on one half and the examples on the other half is super helpful. I did wish the ones with white frames were minus the frames. My phone screen is small enough already without the white screens. And a thing I've noticed is that white absolutely murders color. That's right, it subtracts in a huge way. Keep 'em coming! ❤ And consider having less content per video and therefore posting more (shorter) videos. It suits this medium better. Best, Julia

Great video, Noah. What lighting you buy depends on the overall style of your home, the size of the room and where the electric sockets are located. Your videos are helping me to become more intentional and considered in my choices. Certain designer lights are extremely expensive and trendy so I prefer keepers. It was great that you mentioned that lamps are functional in the way they emit light and aesthetics should be a secondary consideration. I think candlelight is another way of lighting up a space with a soft glow.

The quality is good where it matters - you have excellent audio and the best reference photos. I went down a light bulb rabbit hole last year after I started getting into lamps and bought a vintage Robert Sonneman lamp with the globe bulbs. I also have a number of vintage halogen desk lamps. Getting LED replacements for these things can really go wrong. I never realized how terrible LED light is compared to older “burning” bulbs - they are beautiful like a flame and LED even at the “correct” color temp often just looks dead. I think the technical reason has something to do with the wavelengths that make it up, but that’s when I came to become a bulb snob haha. The British company Tala makes really lovely bulbs - their Sphere collection has adaptive color temperature for dimming so it gets warmer the dimmer you go like old style bulbs. Unfortunately the Spheres didn’t fit in my Sonneman lamp but I have their Echo table lamp with them and it is my favorite lamp ever. I use the regular Tala globe bulb in my Sonneman and I had a little bit of a breakdown because the undertone of those bulbs is just slightly more yellow green than the magenta orange undertone of the Sphere bulbs, even though their color temperature is supposed to overlap, but there was no better alternative and my husband assured me no one can tell 😂

Amazing explanation! I started working at a light company (ERCO) a year ago and they've changed the way I view light and interior design. The idea of entering a room and seeing the wall instead of lit floors, is called wall-washing in erco. It just makes a lot more sense that we navigate spaces head-on in front of us, wall-washing also makes spaces look cleaner and bigger.

I’ve always hated can lights until this video. I’ve never seen or considered using them in specific groupings to highlight walls in a home… beautiful!

Thank you for explaining so well WHY you don't like things; this is so much more helpful than just pointing to another trend or rule. I'm learning so much. And I do have exposed lightbulbs but (oh dear) the light bulb has turned on about the missed opportunity/intentional directing of the light. Troye's AD tour is magical and now I'm understanding better why.

This is the perfect video, I’ve been searching thrift stores for vintage lamps that aren’t a fire hazard or online for cute lamps that aren’t mushroom lol.
