This is golden...thank you so much!! It is high time architects start rendering the real day to day knowledge of solving problems that might not look good as a chapter in a book but are so essential to understand what we actually run into. It pains me to realize, now that I am on that journey, that we can spend years into the profession and yet not know the best way to deal with stuff like this...architects due to their inept abilities n whimsical egos based off of their undying desire to emulate the great STARchitects r failing the next-gen to work at their creative best...although, really appreciate people like you...I’m sure there r many others like me who never comment but admire what you do!! Thank you again:)

I have been a residential and commercial drafter since the mid-80's. I appreciate your video. However, it may just be this project, I don't necessarily know where the furnishing will be placed in the house though I agree some is assumed. Remodeling has been the easiest for me as the homeowner often want new furnishings in near or exact locations as they were. I recently created plans for a medical office and though that was a much easier electrical/data/WiFi and lighting layout as a commercial project, I had to think of how the client would place where the exam tables, desks and such would be placed. So, it was my best guess and used a consistent process throughout the 14 exam rooms, four doctors offices and three nurses stations. Then as the project moved forward the client asked for cabinetry layout. Wow! Having this part of the process included helped me a great deal as now I had a more complete picture and the layout fell into place for the lighting, switches and outlets. I have worked several projects with an interior decorator on remodeling projects and found these projects my favorite projects to draw. I am working more closely with the knowledge of what piece of furniture will go where. I will soon be starting a residential 2nd story addition and major remodeling project. I'm really looking forward to getting back to drafting!!! Thank you again for this video. I found it quite beneficial!

You did a good job showing that there are lots of decisions to make when doing an electrical plan. You must meet the code requirements first, then you have to think about making sure everything is convenient, and attractive. It is excellent that you mention the artistic value that light plays in architecture. It probably doesn't get the attention that it should. One type of design decision that takes a bit of thought is spotting the "advance, and retreat" paths to locate switches along them so the homeowner can turn on, and turn off, the lights as he comes into the home after dark, or turn them off when he goes to bed at night. He should never have to walk to the far end of a room to turn a light off, then walk back in the dark. And, BTW, if an electrician put in a change order to use a 4-way switch in place of one that is marked as a 3-way on the plan, but was clearly shown in a circuit with 2 other switches, I would inform him that he would never be allowed to bid another one of my projects in the future. It's his choice, be a greedy jerk now and make a few extra bucks, or get blackballed and not get future work. It's not hard for an electrician to just redline his drawing before starting work, and being a team player so he is considered for future jobs.

Pity the majority of housebuilders (especially here in the UK) don't agree... the windows are so small (and typically we only get one per room - if you're lucky) and it's already dark 90% of the year! Artificial lighting is all we have to work with in 99% of cases even during the day - it's truly depressing (unless of course, you're lucky enough to have an architecturally significant home.. in that case, it was designed to have natural daylight by someone who cared for the way we humans live rather than to sell a house as quickly as possible.)

I've always been disappointed just how seriously lacking residential lighting design has been; relegated as a disinterested afterthought to comply with code minimum requirements. It wasn't until the 80's people began taking lighting design seriously, and began to think in terms of task, general, accent, and the concept of creating a desired ambulance. One of the biggest mistakes made is the lack of planning for outdoor and landscape lighting, and you pointing out the windows appearing as large black sections of wall is classic! One thing I have noticed that has disappeared from kitchens, but was common back in my day decades ago is a recessed receptacle high on the kitchen wall for a clock, lol. But lighting also has become more complicated now days with code requirements like general lighting, automated lighting control requirements, low energy consumption, minimum lumens. Glad you pointed out about cross referencing with the structural layout early on; that is such a common pitfall in the field. I can appreciate the desire to leave out information to avoid change orders because you might lose track and forget to fully update the switch symbols due to multiple revisions. This kind of thinking has been a growing trend with today's architects to the point of plans being wilfully deficient. For example you can use that same rationalization to leave out your circuit lines as well. The dictionary definition of the word "Architect" is "Master builder". Unfortunately, I think the Architectural field has deviated from it's Master Builder origins and have become little more than just "Stylists".

Quite an enjoyable episode, thank you. My BIM-centric education was focused on large-scale construction projects with design carried out collectively. However, like you, I'm a control freak with a need to complete projects more or less on my own, with a structural engineer where needed. As an aside, 3D visualization tools are so much fun, getting into what color temperatures and different approaches do for the final outcome.
