A mistake I've made is not using the same brand lighting. Color temperatures are not the same from different brands even if it says they are the same on the packaging.

This is my first (well, technically second :D) proper 'talking head' style video, so please be kind! I wasn't sure initially on producing this type of video, but I wanted to share and dive deeper into design topics and challenges which is almost impossible to do with full 'B-roll' clips, so hopefully this is something you find valuable as well. If you do, let me know what topics you want me to cover next. The most upvoted comment/topic suggestion will be made into a video in the upcoming weeks.

Blue White light , 6000 K, helped me immensely in fighting winter blues in the north. I only use it in the morning and the bulbs are very bright. In the evening I only use very warm, dimmed indirect light.

Really interesting video. During lockdown I realized that smart bulbs are a lifesaver, since I have only one room for working and sleeping, the bright white light helped me stay awake during winter and work, and in the evening I dimmed it and changed it to cozy yellow to get into sleeping mode (+ screen color changers like f.lux) and it really helped me to keep a good rhythm :)

It would be great if you could please do a video on the 60-30-10 rule. I understand how balancing out your colour palette in this way makes for a cohesive space that is easy on the eyes… but I have trouble with working out what items the “60%” should apply to and so on.
@threalharrydubois
@threalharrydubois Жыл бұрын
I hope you found your answers in the meantime. if not, maybe this helps: You can use this "rule" for every aspect of design (design means, not "what" we do, but "how" we do it). for Interior Design, It starts with your intention of the space. Lets say you have a three room apartment, and want to combine living with dining room. Lets say you want big focus on the social interactions. So stuff like the sofa & dining table would be the biggest aspects of the room, maybe crossing "highways" in some way, and would have aspects of your "main colour" on your chosen palette. f.e: if your maincolour is green, sofa could be green, and the cushions on the dining seats could be green. Having a small space ? no problem: brighter sofacolour (maybe your secondary colour, or something neutral), and big sofa cushions with your main colour green. the third, or "accent" colour would be decoration. You can apply the same principle with lighting. Its all about your intention with the space! Want to combine your workspace with a small living/chillout area ? well. use your maincolour green on the wall where your desk is, use plants .... and in this case, you could use lighting as main source of routing your attention: Big lamp, spotlight of some sort, and/or very suttle/additional lighting in the small chillout area, the seat/sofa of that area in the secondary colour, third colour sprinkled in the room with decor (your wallpaper, whats on display, etc.). Obviously these are just examples, and you have to evaluate your own space and intentions, how and what colours suits your place, etc. So, see the 60% as your main focus of attention. If the space is for working, dont put a heavy flaming red sofa and a flatscreen in the same room, taking up 2/3 of the room. I highly recommend thinking about your intentions of space, before you start with colours. How you define spaces, and place interiour plays an even bigger role imo. I hope this helps!

I'd like to add that cold white/ "daylight" bulbs can be useful for brightening up dark rooms at daytime, whether it be because the room is very large, has few windows or is on a north side, or you just need light to work. On a bright and sunny day, the blue light will seem natural (like "bringing more sun" into the room), at night, warm white will feel more natural.
@BradThePitts
@BradThePitts 2 жыл бұрын
What you are referring to is called circadian lighting, and it's being implemented and healthcare and nursing home facilities. Artificial daylight during the day helps maintain energy, and towards the end of the day the warmer light tells the body to slow down for eventual sleep.
@antman674
@antman674 Жыл бұрын
Great point. Ive discovered this after endlessly experimenting with my smart bulbs. Soft white during the day with the sun shining through the windows feels more natural and energetic without being too harsh. And warm lights at night feels more relaxing and calming. The "orange" color setting on my particular bulbs produce a very warm light that works really well. Although orange can sometimes have too much red in it to create a relaxing ambiance, with these particular bulbs its more of a very warm white.

Hi Reynard If you ever get the time .. a topic that find mostly elusive, a coverage on the types of ceiling lights (if you're renovating)? May be a little on the same lines on the ceilings and things you can do to it in a cost effective and functional manner. What may work well here for a warmer climates and may be functional and cohesive with the air conditioning. Here, you may have to factor in the fact that ceiling fans would always be a given here!!

The colour temperature of your bulbs has a very huge effect on what your paint colour looks like. Never put warm coloured light bulbs with blue walls. I loved my pale blue but needed to go to your condemned Daylight bulbs to get the correct lighting on the walls. Those Daylight bulbs are in my bedroom (also not what you recommend) and reinforce the pale blue walls and actually give the room a very restful, peaceful feel.

Or better still: shone a light on something I was feeling a tad overwhelmed by (sorry🤓) There are just so many options available that it truly has been really hard to know which way to turn. Hello Reynard, I am so glad you are making these videos. Just now, I realized that I do not feel good in our rented apartment, and I am trying to make it cozier while making good decisions. What I am struggling with is the styling and also the fact that my working space is in our bedroom and my partner's working space is in our living room. I am trying to make it somehow functional, and your videos are truly helpful. I would like to ask about the lightning in these situations. Our bedroom is rectangular where we have a balcony on the shorter side, a bed in the middle next to the long side of the wall, and my working desk next to the balcony. I have a bit issue with placing it as I am a photographer and I have on the opposite side of the bed near the balcony, the paper backdrop for my photoshooting. It seems to me still does not fit quite well together and I am struggling with placing it so it all is functional and cozy. I would really appreciate any tips :) Thank you, have a wonderful day
