Dude, I just discovered your KZbin channel while searching for GVM 800D reviews and my God you've taught me more about lighting in 30 mins than my crap film school did in the past 2 years. I'll be picking up your guide too. Also can you make a video of light meters on a budget that actually work well, great work brother 🔥🙌🙌
@RobEllisCinematographer2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, too kind! I really appreciate it :) the mini course actually features a great light meter in part 3, which also measures colour temperature so it's just a very useful tool to have - illuminati-instruments.myshopify.com/products/illuminati-wireless-light-and-color-meter - it's not cheap cheap, but it beats paying over 1000 for a bigger brand one that does similar things. Hope that helps! :)

You're lighting vids are next level to everyone else's. The way you scientifically looked at the different colour temps (from sun and sky) translated to a far superior look in the shot. Insane how much better it looked and insane how I'd never even considered it. Super excited to just go and try it out. Never heard anyone else discuss this. One other thing...which vid has that shot of you looking in the mirror? Stunning. I need to throw some patreon love your way. You are seriously teaching me.

Simply impressive! Have you ever thought about making short films? You barely move in the shots and they already scream so much emotions and vague stories even without trying to, especially with the ambient music. It's not just informative, it's as fun as watching a true movie/film. Warm regards!

I bought your advanced course and was hoping you would explain how you set the white balance on RGB mixed light. Unfortunately that didn't happen. How do you set this? Example bed and alarm clock, car or bathroom scene. Looking forward to your answer.
@the180degreerule32 жыл бұрын
Studying Realism Painting can help immensely in filmmaking. all Realism Painters know that there is no such thing as 100% pure YELLOW, there are 2 types of Yellow; Warm Yellow, and Cool Yellow. Warm Yellow has a percentage of Red, which gives Yellow a touch of Orange and always used to paint the lit areas of the scene. Cool Yellow has a percentage of Blue, which gives Yellow a touch of Green and always used to paint the areas in the shade in the scene. They never use warm yellow to paint anything Yellow in the shade or cool yellow to paint anything Yellow in contact with light. Warm colors have movement and dominance by nature making them move towards the viewer, Cool colors are the opposite, so using them the way painters do, gives the painting dimension, and makes the subject pop, even if the whole painting is YELLOW, the use of warm and cool Yellow in itself adds contrast, not to mention all the other elements that can further increase it.

Great video! Could you possibly tell me what mount you used to boom the camera for the overhead shot?
@RobEllisCinematographer2 жыл бұрын
The camera (BMPCC6K Pro) is stripped down to a cage and simply hanging from a heavy duty boom arm :) I would recommend attaching some sort of safety cable/strap if you're planning on hanging a camera from anything, even if it's light!

Can the white balance in camera not be reduced to somewhere between 4000-4500 Kelvin, Rob? And still get that blue-ish look on the face while maintaining a somewhat warm tone for the light falling on top of the head?

To push the K above 10k, would you achieve a similar result to using a gel by adding another (bounced) light? (ie: is light "additive" to a certain extent)
@RobEllisCinematographer2 жыл бұрын
Light is additive in terms of brightness/output for sure, but not temperature - if you want to change your colour temperature you need gels or you need a bi colour unit :)

My work on here so far is mainly directed toward breaking down my own setups, so it's easy to see how you can achieve these sorts of looks and learn about the processes - so I haven't really analysed any popular cinematographers' work or anything of that nature... yet!
