It doesn't have to be just in fog or mist, adding haze with the Dehaze tool is a really good way of brightening parts of an image to make it look like light is hitting them. Really useful and some great insights thanks Andy. BTW for Sony shooters - the A7R III (and others I believe) apparently don't use a sharpening filter on RAW files like other cameras. It means I actually had to reduce the default of 40 etc. down to 25, 1, 10 and then use masking at around 80. If you have complex foliage etc. and are higher than that, you'll get really weird zippering and other issues. Unfortunately, the way Adobe handles the RAWs still includes it by default. You'll only catch it if pixel peeping, but can make a huge difference quality wise esp. if using texture as well.

Excellent video ! Never used dehaze before for lightening up, but definitely will git it a try, thanks! By the way do you ever use Fuji film simulation profiles as base for color grading like Velvia or Astia ? Or even Pro Neg Standard?
@AndyMumford5 жыл бұрын
I shoot in Pro Neg Standard because the histogram and JPG image on the LCD are the closest to the RAW file, but I never look at the JPGs when editing...I prefer to just work from as blank a canvas as possible
@Alimotafaker5 жыл бұрын
@@AndyMumford Thanks for your reply! What about lightroom? In the video the color profile of the Raw is Abobe Color, do you ever use the built in Fujifilm profiles too? I found that Pro Neg Standard handles post processing very well and colors are natural but slightly muted so some enchantment required
@hamdc42915 жыл бұрын
Great video Andy. I've been in Capture One a lot recently but so great to get a reinforcement of Lightroom and that I probably would have done the same things as you on that image. It's difficult for me to get away from that habit of trying to do so much globally sometimes. I really liked the dehaze trick! Regards. (Good luck with the new laptop. What are you upgrading to?)
@AndyMumford5 жыл бұрын
Hi Hamish, how are you doing? Hope you're well. I do love Capture One, but I switch around a lot. I was in the Dolomites for almost 3 weeks with just my iPad so was using Lightroom to edit a lot. And the dehaze to add hazy brightness is one of my favourite tricks to bring in light. I did the laptop upgrade yesterday. It's a 16" MacBook Pro with 8 core and 32GB RAM. The one I was using was a 2015 quad core with 16gb of RAM and doing anything with video was pretty painful, but I was holding off upgrading till Apple sorted out the keyboards on their laptops and introduced the bigger screen.

Hi Andy, I am interested to know how you import your Fuji files into Lightroom. Following a recent video from Mr Heaton who complained about the worms.
@AndyMumford5 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I've not had a problem with the "worms" with my X-T3 Lightroom. I don't know what it is, I don't know whether it's because I'm not a pixel peeper, but when I look at the images at 100% I don't see them. I certainly did with the X-T1, but with the new camera and latest version of LR it's not been an issue for me. I never do any sharpening in LR though, so maybe it's that.
@nathan882744 жыл бұрын
Your pictures are beautiful, and I feel like I should be paying for this tutorial! I have one question, I have been considering purchasing a Fujifilm camera and throughout my research one thing always seems to come up. People say that Lightroom doesn't process Fuji raw files well, and that you need to use an Iridient plugin or switch to C1. What are your thoughts and do you do anything additional when you edit Fuji photos in Lr?
@AndyMumford4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it. Capture One Pro does give you more detail on the RAW files right out of camera, and I think it produces better colour straight out of the camera too, but I've never had a problem with Lightroom. I use it most of the time to be honest, the only thing is that I have all the sharpening set to 0. I only do my sharpening at the very end of the process when I export the TIFF or JPG from the RAW file for out put.

Thanks for the comment, glad you found it useful. I use the latest version of Lightroom Classic. I don't believe some of the tools (Dehaze or Range masks) are on older versions of Lightroom

Do you find more control in LR or photoshop? I use both, but I have found personally that Photoshop is better for dodging and burning rather than through filters alone in LR. Do you still use both? Thanks! Love the world!

Thanks John. I think PS is better for fine control but I use both in my work. I wanted to keep the video simple though and jus focus on Lightroom and what you could do with it

Andy Mumford thank you for the reply! I completely understand!

All I ever read about is issues importing RAW Fuji files in Lightroom CC, but that seems to be all you use? I have a new XT30 arriving today, will I have these much talked about problems or has LR been updated sufficiently to remediate these issues?

I actually use both C1 and Lightroom and find C1 gives me more detail from the files right out of the camera. However, I've never had a problem with the quality of Lightroom and use it a lot

How is the conversion of Fuji raw files in LR these days? Is it still a problem? I’m looking at getting a Fuji camera but this worries me

I've personally never had a problem with the way Lightroom deals with Fuji RAW files. It's not something that's ever bothered me, so i'm probably not a good person to ask

@@AndyMumford clearly it can’t be much of an issue then. Cheers

Hi, I use an iPad Pro and Lightroom for importing and editing. Have you found issues with using Fujifilm and Lightroom? I have heard that lightroom can create a lot of noise and worms with Fujifilm.i hope not as I’ve found a great deal on an X-T3 and I’m very much sold on the camera, I’m just concerned that I may not end up happy with the end result. Many Thanks.

I've been using Lightroom with Fuji cameras for 4 years and don't have any problems. But I don't do any sharpening in the RAW files (only the output JPEG) and I'm not a pixel peeper at all.

Andy Mumford oh cool, that’s interesting about the JPEG, thanks!

Thomas Heaton talked in one of his Videos about the issue that Lightroom is rendering the Fuji raw files in a kind of imperfect way and that some artefact structures appear in the image. Have you experienced the same issue while using lightroom for editing your Fuji raw files?

It's not something I've noticed...but it really depends on the level of default sharpening you apply in LR. I have sharpening turned to 0 and only sharpen the output files (JPG for web, TIFF for print) in PS after they are exported
