Two paraphrases stood out for me, 'photograph the feeling' and 'sculpt the light'. Six words that sum up great photography. Cheers

Excellent advice. A useful tip is hold the shift key down when you create the gradient filter to ensure that it stays straight (unless you want it slanted).

I came across your channel while searching for info to help me decide whether to purchase a Fujifilm X-T30 as a travel camera to take with me to French Polynesia in a couple of months (I also have a Nikon D7100). I have watched many Lightroom videos (both paid and free) and I learned more from watching your 30-minute video than I have from watching many 4-hour ones. I particularly appreciate that you explain the "why" of making (or not making) adjustments.

I learned something new from your video. It had never accrued to me to actually add haze to parts of the photo I'm editing. It doesnt happen often but the next time I take a photo in fog or mist I'll use that trick. Thanks for the video, I really love your videos, please keep them coming.
@AndyMumford

Thanks for the comment, glad you found something useful. It doesn't have to be just in fog or mist, adding haze with the Dehaze tool is a really good way of brightening parts of an image to make it look like light is hitting them. I use it a lot with the radial filters and an tiny colour temperature increase

Gradient adjustment covering the people, range masked so the background isn't effected, in the same way that Andy used here. Though if there isn't much tonal separation between background and foreground, Photoshop is more useful.

Really useful and some great insights thanks Andy. BTW for Sony shooters - the A7R III (and others I believe) apparently don't use a sharpening filter on RAW files like other cameras. It means I actually had to reduce the default of 40 etc. down to 25, 1, 10 and then use masking at around 80. If you have complex foliage etc. and are higher than that, you'll get really weird zippering and other issues. Unfortunately, the way Adobe handles the RAWs still includes it by default. You'll only catch it if pixel peeping, but can make a huge difference quality wise esp. if using texture as well.

Excellent video ! Never used dehaze before for lightening up, but definitely will git it a try, thanks! By the way do you ever use Fuji film simulation profiles as base for color grading like Velvia or Astia ? Or even Pro Neg Standard?
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 5 жыл бұрын
I shoot in Pro Neg Standard because the histogram and JPG image on the LCD are the closest to the RAW file, but I never look at the JPGs when editing...I prefer to just work from as blank a canvas as possible
@Alimotafaker
@Alimotafaker 5 жыл бұрын
@@AndyMumford Thanks for your reply! What about lightroom? In the video the color profile of the Raw is Abobe Color, do you ever use the built in Fujifilm profiles too? I found that Pro Neg Standard handles post processing very well and colors are natural but slightly muted so some enchantment required

Great video Andy. I've been in Capture One a lot recently but so great to get a reinforcement of Lightroom and that I probably would have done the same things as you on that image. It's difficult for me to get away from that habit of trying to do so much globally sometimes. I really liked the dehaze trick! Regards. (Good luck with the new laptop. What are you upgrading to?)
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Hamish, how are you doing? Hope you're well. I do love Capture One, but I switch around a lot. I was in the Dolomites for almost 3 weeks with just my iPad so was using Lightroom to edit a lot. And the dehaze to add hazy brightness is one of my favourite tricks to bring in light. I did the laptop upgrade yesterday. It's a 16" MacBook Pro with 8 core and 32GB RAM. The one I was using was a 2015 quad core with 16gb of RAM and doing anything with video was pretty painful, but I was holding off upgrading till Apple sorted out the keyboards on their laptops and introduced the bigger screen.

You mean in the camera or the software. I shoot RAW, but have the camera set to Pro Neg Standard because the histogram and JPG image on the LCD are the closest to the RAW file.

Great tutorial. Though I was surprised you use default sharpening. I always get strange artifacts with default sharpening on xpro2 raw files. Is it different with the xt3?

I never really noticed artufacts with the X-T2, but I think I had the default sharpening set lower then (older version of Lightroom)

Hi Andy, I am interested to know how you import your Fuji files into Lightroom. Following a recent video from Mr Heaton who complained about the worms.
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 5 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I've not had a problem with the "worms" with my X-T3 Lightroom. I don't know what it is, I don't know whether it's because I'm not a pixel peeper, but when I look at the images at 100% I don't see them. I certainly did with the X-T1, but with the new camera and latest version of LR it's not been an issue for me. I never do any sharpening in LR though, so maybe it's that.

Your pictures are beautiful, and I feel like I should be paying for this tutorial! I have one question, I have been considering purchasing a Fujifilm camera and throughout my research one thing always seems to come up. People say that Lightroom doesn't process Fuji raw files well, and that you need to use an Iridient plugin or switch to C1. What are your thoughts and do you do anything additional when you edit Fuji photos in Lr?
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it. Capture One Pro does give you more detail on the RAW files right out of camera, and I think it produces better colour straight out of the camera too, but I've never had a problem with Lightroom. I use it most of the time to be honest, the only thing is that I have all the sharpening set to 0. I only do my sharpening at the very end of the process when I export the TIFF or JPG from the RAW file for out put.

One quick question if I may: as Fuji shooter, do you use any preset for this images (film simulation) or you shoot and then do all the post processing? Sorry if I missed the answer in the video

Hi. This is all done on a RAW file. The film simulations are only on JPEGs

Hi Andy, I've been following you for a while now, both in KZbin and IG. I love your work. How do you get so sharp + focused images? I also own the 10-24 and 55-200mm, and for some reason my photos aren't as in focused/sharped as yours. Looking at your videos, when you zoom in, the photos are so crisp, and mine look out of focused/moved. Any tips around this subject?

Hi Salvador. Thanks for the comment, glad you enjoy the videos. I don't really know what to say because I don't do anything specific with my images. I shoot manual focus with focus peaking, I always use the middle of the aperture range (f8-f11) if possible, and shoot RAW. In the field that's it really, and then the processing that I showed in this video
@chavasalazar

Thanks for replying. I was just wondering if you used focus stacking or any other technique to get sharper images. From your response seems that you're just taking one exposure. Looking forward for more videos! 😅

Hi there Im new to landscape photography. I use Nikon D5300. Please let me know what is the best budget lens or 2 lenses should i buy?
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 5 жыл бұрын
I don't use Nikon cameras so can't tell you specific lenses, but I would start with a wide angle zoom around 10-24mm (APSC) and a telephoto zoom that covers 50-150mm (APSC)

All I ever read about is issues importing RAW Fuji files in Lightroom CC, but that seems to be all you use? I have a new XT30 arriving today, will I have these much talked about problems or has LR been updated sufficiently to remediate these issues?

Hi, I use an iPad Pro and Lightroom for importing and editing. Have you found issues with using Fujifilm and Lightroom? I have heard that lightroom can create a lot of noise and worms with Fujifilm.i hope not as I’ve found a great deal on an X-T3 and I’m very much sold on the camera, I’m just concerned that I may not end up happy with the end result. Many Thanks.

I've been using Lightroom with Fuji cameras for 4 years and don't have any problems. But I don't do any sharpening in the RAW files (only the output JPEG) and I'm not a pixel peeper at all.

Thomas Heaton talked in one of his Videos about the issue that Lightroom is rendering the Fuji raw files in a kind of imperfect way and that some artefact structures appear in the image. Have you experienced the same issue while using lightroom for editing your Fuji raw files?
@AndyMumford
@AndyMumford 4 жыл бұрын
It's not something I've noticed...but it really depends on the level of default sharpening you apply in LR. I have sharpening turned to 0 and only sharpen the output files (JPG for web, TIFF for print) in PS after they are exported
