I met David Spade during the summer after his first season on SNL. He was filming his role in Light Sleeper, playing a tweaking customer of Willem DaFoe's drug dealer character, and had yet to hear as to whether he would be coming back to the show. He told me about how cool it was to be there, and was particularly enamored of Dana Carvey, who I'm led to believe took him under his wing and befriended him. Carvey is well respected with SNL alumni, and was the first guy to employ Steve Carrel and Stephen Colbert on his network variety show. I ran into Spade about 6 months later in the same restaurant I had met him months previous, and he was kind enough to introduce me to some of the cast members at his table. Very chill dude, and way friendlier than his image would have you believe.

This show was awesome for a variety of reasons. David Spade could take both the front stage and the front row seat. He introduced comedians that people hadn't heard of. He could hang out with top comedians in the business, take a little ribbing and make a show of it. He made light of daily issues that stress everyone out. He would sometimes bring his mother onboard who had a comedic vibe of her own. He was 'the little guy', or underdog, which makes people cheer for him to independently succeed. Who wouldn't tune in to current events, through a comedic perspective, a comedy variety show that stands alone and a cheering section for the underdog, all at the same time??! I LOVED his show! Bring back David Spade, comedy host extraordinaire!!!
