Bear in mind that the noise and vibration at idle will be quite low on this car because it's a nicely balanced straight 6 engine. On a 4 cylinder car the vibrations are going to be a lot worse. But it's a nice review, you have a good style of presentation.

Great way to explain it. When you said sometimes you mess up and you jerk the car at startup - I have a solution for you! Get rid of your CDV (clutch delay valve) and put in a stainless steel braided slave cylinder hose. I am an experienced clutch driver but on the bmws that have those stupid delay valves I always felt like wtf is wrong with me. Why is this happening. Well now it never happens and I’ve had it mine like I explained for about three years now! EDIT: I heard at the end you already did this so never-mind HAHA!

Thanks for the video! I did a single-mass flywheel conversion on my first BMW, a 1991 318i cabrio, and it was absolutely worth doing. For that conversion I used factory parts, specifically a single-mass unit from a 325i of similar vintage (E30 chassis). The power increase was immediately noticeable and I suppose I lucked out as there was nary an increase in noise or vibration. I'm looking forward to upgrading my flywheel to a lightweight unit when the clutch in my 2002 325i finally gives up the ghost.

Funny you mentioned the 9-3 you own! I have a 2007 9-3 2.8 v6 and am looking to get a smf over the 36-39lb dual mass flywheel. I do agree it takes a minute to drop in revs, and a little more throttle to down shift the gears correctly.

This is a really interesting mod! The clutch on my E39 is almost shot so will have to replace it soon anyway and this sounds like a great mod to do at the same time. I've always felt the engine is slow to rev up and the revs hang too much making smooth shifts difficult.

In my e39 six cylinder with lightweight singlemass flywheel there is very noticeable annoying rattle between 1300-1800rpm in every gear and also when gear oil warms up it rattles in idle too. Lightweight flywheel is nice otherwise but my most daily driving is city driving so in my use I can hear the annoying flywheel chatter in every trafficlights I’m standing on and every time I accelerate or driving uphill, I don’t even want to drive my car anymore because of that noise😃 I need to change dualmass back and see how much power it can handle(my car is with m52 turbo engine, 54/60mm turbo)

I totally rebuilt an Audi B6 3.0 convertible. I did a cvt to manual and FWD to Quattro conversion using a JHM lightweight chromoly flywheel mated to a O1E 6 speed tranny. It goes without saying that it is now a completely different car going from a comfortable smooth touring soft top to a real sports car. I obviously can't judge my car on a simple dual mass to a single mass after such a drivetrain makeover but after watching this video I am glad I did not go for a dual mass.

Flywheels have a purpose and a specific design range bases on the engine, configuration and number of cylinders. If you step out of the design range the gains are completely erased by the losses. Many times the seemingly faster reving is offsett by undesirable rev drop. The reduced momentum of a light weight makes the drive harsh, increases harmonic vibrations and impact spikes, resulting on reduced life of the drive line.

Great video. It had direct impact on events with my car. As soon as DMF in my Octavia VRS 2.0 TSI 6M (APR1 with 235kW & 516Nm) started to slip in 5th gear from 2.000rpm then in 4th then in 3rd, mostly at the torque peak, I knew it has to be replaced. Now there is light SMF in it. Difference? Huge & positive. It is like I have totally different car: engine is more responsive, acceleration is better, throttle reaction inertia, which existed with DMF, disappeared, shifting is faster... It fells as if the car should have been fitted with SMF from the beginning, unveiling its full performance potential. Would I do it again with 40.000km on SMF? Definitely.

When i had one in my fwd car what i notice that was annoying was that in slow maneuvers and stop and go traffic the car can start bucking. People think u dont know how to drive, lol. Otherwise i loved it. Im looking at this again for my current car to possibly help with the ridiculous rev hange between shifts. Especially one to two. But I'm worried because this car is all-wheel drive.

Light weight flywheels are for racing applications, when the engine constantly has high load on it. Using such a flywheel for street driving will kill your drive train alot faster. The engineers know what they are doing.

Dont forget 550.00 for flywheel plus clutch 150.00. 700.00 in parts. Thats if you have a flywheel that takes stock clutch pressure plate. ECS uses the stock pressure plate. No custom clutch required. The one I purchased was for my Z4 2004. Freed up power in having to move less mass to the wheels. Like gaining 75 more hp.

I bought my NC2 Miata used, and it sounds just like this on idle. It does remind me of a "diesel" engine sound for a second, but it is not as loud. This is the fastest revving NC I have ever driven, and now I wonder if the only previous owner installed a lightened flywheel. I was wondering if he had tuned it or something. I will get a lightened fly wheel when the clutch goes. Then i will know if the previous owner did this mod or not. In the meantime, a set of light wheels will make things better.

Update: The clutch went, and I replaced it with the clutch, pressure plate, and 8.4lb Flywheel Flyin' Miata Happy meal. I also changed the clutch master, slave, and a braided clutch line. @31acruz

My E36 M3 shifts as fast as what you showed on your screen and is crazy fast. While you covered the pluses of the lightweight but ignored all the negatives. No longer enjoy the vibration free BMW famous silky smoothness at park state and first gear take off. The dual mass also cancels out frequencies to add to the quiet feel. My car is obscene fast as is, but if I wanted to add horsepower, I would not do it at the expense of what I listed. There are other ways, M50 intake, bolt on Turbo etc. The diesel sound would also completely turn me off.

Try and find an ordinary E28 535i flywheel.Older 533i/733i flywheels are a little lighter but not really desirable for ur turbo build and often harder to find and a little more expensive.A single mass flywheel also give you better clutch options to handle all that torque.You dont have to spend that much on a aftermarket kit...just do a swap with first oem flywheel you find and put good pressure plate and disc.Plenty threads about it.

People ask why I would want to switch to the lightweight flywheel. Honestly the main reason is that the lightweight flywheel with a new clutch and complete install kit for cheaper than the price of a new dual mass flywheel(dmf). Also because the dmf cant be resurfaced, but the aftermarket flywheel has a replaceable friction plate.

I was researching lightweight flywheels and I thought this dude looks and sounds like the Throttle House guy, is he trying to imitate him? Then minimized the video and had my answer 😅

i've read on the forums people talk about cars with lightweight flywheels struggle up heel... whats your experience?
@ThrottleHouse
@ThrottleHouse 8 жыл бұрын
The car itself Does not struggle at all uphill. In fact it has more power available so it's easier. If you mean "starting" on a hill then yes. It is more challenging to slip the clutch and get rolling up a hill as it requires more revs.

excuse my spelling by the way auto correct loves messing with me, i see what you mean, that could be a problem for me as here is alot of uphills where i stay might wana rethink this whole thing

Yea I could see how it might get annoying. It's all a matter of whether or not you are serious about performance mods. There are usually some sacrifices that need to be made for that smile factor when it counts.

If your vehicle comes with a dual mass flywheel, it's generally not advisable to switch to a single mass steel flywheel, much less a lightweight flywheel UNLESS you spend more time on the track than on the street. The dual mass flywheel is there to protect your engine and transmission from excessive vibration at low RPM. Not a problem for purpose built road course cars that spend most of their time at high RPM, because there is enough rotational inertia there in a light flywheel to do the job at high rpm. At idle, there isn't. You'll notice increased gear train rattle, rumbling at idle in neutral, etc. and that noise is the result of torsional vibration in your crankshaft. No bueno for a road car sitting in traffic all the time. You can combat this a little bit with an upgraded damper pulley, but there is absolutely a reason your car came with a DMF - it is a critical component for absorbing torsional vibration that the engineers worked in as part of the engine balance "big picture" for your particular engine. Ask early Coyote tuners who were shattering oil pump gears and snapping timing chains with solid flywheels at the drag strip in that initial hit off the line. You have to be able to deal with those pulses of energy being hammered into the crank with each combustion stroke. Like everything, it's a trade off and you can certainly do whatever you want to your car, but this is the point where you begin to blur the line between street car and track car. Driving a track car on the street where it doesn't belong will damage components, just like driving a street car on the track too hard will damage things like dual mass flywheels. Light flywheels on street cars is generally pointless and tends to shorten the life of your engine and trans components. If you want a track car, build a track car that lives on the track. What kills dual mass flywheels is dumping the clutch for hole shots, and manuals are generally no good for drag racing anyway. Modern manual equipped drivetrains with DMFs are really only ever good at being street cars. It takes a lot of due diligence and know how to keep them happy and reliable on street applications converted to a solid flywheel.

I don't want to discourage anyone from modifying and enjoying their car. Some engines are inherently well balanced (I6, flat 6 etc.) and you may be able to get away with a lightened, solid flywheel on the street, but I would talk to a performance builder or engineering shop that knows about your particular drivetrain before you take the plunge. I decided, after completely murdering two dual mass flywheels in my 3.6LFX Camaro that I had reached the limits of the drivetrain and that it was time to just leave it be as a street car, not abuse it, and be happy with it. I'll buy something older and simpler to chase lower pass times. That V6 is coarse and ill refined, the timing system is somewhat weak, and I don't think it's a good candidate for a solid flywheel. I just have to be careful about how hard I shock the clutch on hole shots.

is there a single mass flywheel (also lightened) that you can install in your e46 and has absolutely no chatter noise?

Thing is everyone focuses so much on the flywheel, but you have to consider mass of entire rotating assembly too. Someone will install let's say 18lb flywheel instead ("still lighter than stock by 6lb yo!") but then install heavy E34 M5 clutch so now entire rotating assembly is heavier than stock E46 DMF and self adjusting clutch.

So if I buy an after market clutch would it work better or more efficiently with a lightweight flywheel or would an oem be just as fine? Does it even make a difference in that aspect? A daily driver don’t ever intend on taking it to the track or anything only got a stage 1 excedy clutch for my 8th gen si

My new lightweight flywheel seems to be throwing a check engine light for misfires... is this possible and should I just bite the bullet and put a NEW steel flywheel on and take my NEW aluminum flywheel off and throw it at McLeod for not telling me this could happen... seems to be no solution I can find. I have a 17 mustang gt and bought the McLeod RXT clutch with aluminum flywheel.

Speaking from experience I have a billet aluminum lightweight flywheel and dropped 4.5 pounds from the stock flywheel and it SUCKS starting in 1st. High rev just to get momentum. I would say between 2500 and 3000 rpm.

I want to know if anyone has designed a flywheel with a heavyweight part that disengages beyond a certain rpm, so the outer rim declutches and leaves you with a lightweight center for revs above about 2000 and then comes back in, so you get punchy performance for spirited driving, but smooth pulling away and low idle. Some sort of centrifugal device might work, but with brake shoes on a one end of a weighted pivot so they tuck into the center flywheel at high rpm, and are pushed to grip the outer rim by a spring at low rpm. You won't need much clamping force either, as all you are doing is holding a free spinning outer rim, especially if you put the starter teeth on a lightweight extension to the inner piece.
