We Build an Oak House

Welcome to another project! This year has come to an end and this is the final video of this year. We still have a couple of days of work on this house but the most is completed and shown in this video. Investor drew an entire house and our part was to make a wooden structure. This project actually started last year when we ordered freshly cut oak from the saw mill and it stayed covered in front of the workshop to dry over a year period. after that, we started cutting all the pieces in the workshop and then assemble it on the site. A few months have passed in between the workshop and the site assembly and in that period the wood warped a little bit and gave us some trouble but we managed to fix it into place. You write the joints are stronger with the screws compared to the pegs but we have the oak snap a lot of screws in about 2 years of drying. Then a company did some strength tests and they calculated that using hardwood pegs are about 24-29 times stronger then the 8xwhatever teller head screws (we tested, spax, heico and i think fischer). The frame is sturdy enough of course so it will never collapse but the pegs move with the frame, the screws just rot away. Have worked for centuries. Loved that you make the glulam yourself instead of ordering it or something. We always just go to the forest and find curved oak and axe hew it in shape. Hope to see more of the projects

+1 for pegs. Bolts can be used, but not that type is what we r using mostly. A simple rod with washers and nuts on both end

@@thenarrator1984 except there have been houses with pegs hundreds of years old, and the test showed the screws got really weak fast, they dont move with the wood, like the pegs do. All was tested and screws are just the wrong choice, especially with oak which shrinks a lot.

i am an English carpenter from liverpool. I was lucky enough to work with a german zimmeriei in the black forest building houses like you make . We also did a restoration in wolfach after a fire in 1999 great experiance . now retired in the same village i first came to in 1997.

Love the blend of craftsmanship and technique with all the modern capabilities of power tools. The use of robotic routing is just mesmerizing. Not all common in the USA. Flat CNC routing is very common. Also, 5 axis milling, but mostly in the metal fabrication business. Another great project and video, as always!!

With tolerances that tight, precision is a must but we've come to expect nothing less of you and your team! It is a bit confusing why you'd install the roof before the final plaster coat is applied to the house, it just seems that there are lots of opportunities to ruin or mess up all that beautiful workmanship. Good Day, merry Christmas and happy New Year, very interesting work, A work of Art, it makes you wonder how skilled Crossman done it back hundreds and hundreds of years ago all by hand, I have been watching the repair and renovation of Notre Dame, very impressive work, very interesting territorial love the music, I wish all the success for the future, old English dude living in France, specialist joiner cabinet maker carpenter, now retired, I live in a very old Moulin/Mill that has some very impressive beams in the structure that would’ve held pulleys and lifting gear from hundreds of years ago for lifting grain, sadly I have a problem with Roof, nothing wrong with the structure it’s what is it is covered with, and I cannot get it repaired as it is made of asbestos, I’ve been told that I’ve got to pay for part of the cost, which I cannot afford, , anyway that’s my problem, keep up the very impressive work. Yeas asbestos is a big problem here too. Good thing is that the state financed the removal and disposal of old asbestos tiles so there is very little of it left. If not, people here would also have hard time dealing with it. There is something special in old wooden structures. I'm currently working on a church tower and it is a replica of an old one damaged in an earthquake. We use cranes and all the modern tools and I often wonder how they did it 300 year ago.. There are even 300 year old marks with hearths and old loves written inside them:) People were the same as today. I'm glad you like the work! Thank you for your reply, Is financial aid for this type of removal of asbestos roofing, this is what I’ve been trying to find out, My biggest problem is, I’m lacking funds , as I lost a lot of my money due to my ex partner, she scammed me for hundreds of thousands of pounds, I had somebody in the local town that I thought was helping me trying to resolve this problem , but I believe my ex partner is still trying to cause problems for me over here she’s got other people involved accusing me of doing things which I’ve never done, I have been thinking about trying to make bits of furniture wood turning et cetera to try and sell to raise some money , I do have a serious amount of tools and machinery that I brought across from the UK, and at present, I’m trying to insulate a bit of garage/workshop, as it has got a metal roof on it, and a lot of condensation,, I was told a few years ago that I should get financial aid for insulation of my roof of property and walls, obviously somebody has said something and this all stopped, if you can give me some advice would be very much appreciated, I hope you have a great New Year’s Eve, and I wish you all the success for the future, Phil

This looks amazing and the internal oak framing inside the walls must make this house strong to survive almost anything nature has. Not sure about the screws though. Will they last more than 100 years? Will the plating on them protect against damp and the acidity of the oak? Oak pegs have proved themselves in half timber houses as old as 600 or 700 years, they may need replacement after some time but this is not as difficult as removing rusted out screws. When the head snaps off you can only remove them with a long core bit cutting the wood away around the screw. And then the hole has to be pegged anyway. Also pegs have the ability to tighten joints when the wood dries, by having the holes in both parts slightly off center.

The wood frame looks great. Though, the combo with gas concrete blocks is not great. The amount ov water is 400l per m3 blocks from the factory. Takes at least two years to dry. The amount of water will create mould on the nice oak frame.

I am from Brittany. 1m3 oak 200 euros - with land and trees around your property not more expensive than modern material. Chesnut has always been prefered for the frame under the slates and rain. Oak for the floor or vertical beams. Only one crucial point : competent carpenter (1-2 years wait for the one I know). This design is a facade to be visible inside a box of concrete - low level carpentry - peg are secured by hidden screws. Croix de Jupiter with bolts and nuts ! I will build a warehouse near a protected a historical area (concrete box forbidden), douglas less expensive but small difference with wood available around.

@@invest48 I agree that a competent carpenter is not easy to find nor engage. many years ago, I wanted oak stairs built a special way, when I approached the recommended carpenter he gave me a 18 month wait before he could even start. I went for 'second best' who was recommended by the 1st choice and got the stairs started after 5 months. Nowadays it is even more difficult to find and engage a competent carpenter.

If they still want to learn when they’re older, there are schools for that available (at least in the US). The Compagnon du Devoir is really good if you’re in France. I think other countries like Germany also have guilds, so there are options :)

Pretty sure this crane is made by Gru Benedini, but I don't know which model. I'm no expert on these small trailerable self-erecting cranes; however, after a bit of internet sleuthing, that's my conclusion. The logo on the tower matches, and the layout is similar (lattice tower rather than tubular, transport wheel location correct, etc.). It could be a model which is no longer currently offered in their catalog, perhaps from the 1990s. I got sucked in by the cheesecake cruck frame thumbnail, but stayed for the crane! I don't have a regular use for such a device, but it looks like it would be darned handy in congested spaces.

I'd bet it was a standard d3 PVA wood glue.

For glulam we use two component melamine formaldehyde d4 glue from akzo nobel.
