The barefoot hewing is a demonstration by our tutor to show the traditional Japanese hewing technique. During the course, for students the hewing is allowed only in safety shoes. @@geoffrey6000 because you can grip the wood and not slip as with shoes. Also with a heavy axe that sharp no footwear is going to stop a nasty wound if you don't get it right! I'm just trying to find a video I saw that explains it, I'll send the link.

Really impressive. I'm wondering if the pins used to lock assemblies are in really in Steel? Usually we use hard wood pins.

Ideally, you pull a chalk line up 2 inches at the most. Any higher than that your line will be off.
