Liking and Disliking | Japanese From Zero! Video 16

[Course 1 Lesson 5]
Being able to say that you LIKE or DISLIKE something in Japanese is going to allow you to start having more interesting conversation.
I will only be allowing approved comments since so many people want to post "spoilers" and try to push more information out to the students watching. This only hurts the student who is just starting. Often the commenter thinks they are helping but they are often not even getting the basics of the concept right. Comments on all other series will still be available without approval but not for the series where I am teaching in order.

It is VERY rare that someone attacks me in any way. So far I think there have been 3 at most. I am more bothered by comments that try to push to hard in teaching Japanese beyond the goal of the lesson. I feel like a broken record now, but learning is a delicate process. You have to deal with people's emotions as they easily get discouraged. One of the best ways to keep someone moving forward is to make sure they FEEL like they got a concept. So many users think they are helping by posting "ALSO you can do this" or "this is good but also consider this", which isn't bad to know, but sometimes the timing can actually hurt a new student. BEYOND that 98% of comments have been great.

I agree. I'm glad I taught myself english as a child which I also improved in time. English is so useful compared to my native language. George is making one of my biggest dreams come true, which is to learn how to speak and read japanese in a fluent way. I'm still trying to understand how to put sentences together and memorize the Hiragana characters. It's not easy for me unfortunately even with constant repetition and recaps from the books and the videos. I had to move a bit forward because as George mentioned in one of the earlier videos, sometimes it's better to move forward to be able to learn.

Hi Lunacorn! It won’t always be easy perhaps, but if you can get through the core basics keep adding Japanese to your brain you can get further than you might have even imagined. Hey, so this is a random video to leave this comment on, but I thought you might like to hear it and this is the video I happened to be on. About 5 years ago I saw your book at a small shop in Little Tokyo, in Los Angeles. At the time my friends all had some sort of basic language they were studying, one German, one French, and one Korean. I always told myself I didnt have the capacity to learn another language so I never really tried. But I cracked your book open and I thought it was really interesting. As a bit of a challenge to myself, I bought it and studied what I could. I got the second book as a christmas present and bought the third book for myself when I saw it was available. I gave up the language for a while after that, but when my friend said he wanted to get into the language I bought him two of your revised textbooks, the newer ones with the nice anime drawings. Last year I picked the language back up. I have a tutor, phone apps, and I've developed some really cool study games and methods. I'm making a lot of progress really quickly, especially this year. I'm going to take the next 5 years and try to get on the path to being a translator. I'm also planning on making a video series of my own with some of the study methods I've made and some basic tips. Anyways, I just wanted to let you know that as melodramatic and cheesy as it might sound, picking up the first Japanese From Zero textbook and studying it really changed a huge part of my life, and I'm glad it got me where I am now. And no worries, I'll pick up your fourth book when I get some money. ;) ~Kudou

Hi George. I just heard what you said on this video. Please don't let the internet trolls get you down. You're a great teacher and your books and videos are amazingly effective. You somehow make learning a foreign language self-motivating and fun while incorporating a solid foundation of grammar, unlike other apps which mainly focus on memorizing vocabulary in a game-like format. I took 6 years of Spanish (including AP classes) during Jr High and HS, and every minute of it was painful and an incredible waste of time. I just wish my teachers back then used your methodology to teach Spanish.

The way you teach is great. The videos are a great companion to the book and really help reinforce what's taught in each chapter. I started out on a whim learning hiragana/katakana for fun and while it was satisfying in its own way, by the end I still didn't really feel like I had learned anything that I could actually use - whereas every lesson you do, a new useful concept is introduced that builds on everything prior and expands the possibilities exponentially. I have been a language teacher for 20 years (not Japanese but I think it doesn't matter here) and my job has frequently been dealing with observing and assessing other teachers and training them in technical terms. I'm glad not everying gets taught straight away. I like how your videos and books break things down and take it slowly. Even with that method I keep forgetting. If I was trying to learn from another book that packed in loads of information I would be struggling. Your books are great for people who are learning by themselves. Other methods might work with a teacher or in a class but when you are learning yourself its good to have books that takes things slowly.

I love your way of teaching! It's very easy-going, and you really gave thought to the content of your lessons. Before you, I bought a beginners course and the mentors were Japanese... I just have to say, I had a REALLY HARD TIME understanding what I was doing, or what I was studying. I was memorizing things, but I didn't know why or what for. 12:30 A better explanation would be... "In japanese, you don't always have to say "what do YOU like?" because we already know who we are talking to. The full sentence in japanese is... Anata wa nani ga suki desu ka? (this is in romaji because I promised to myself I would learn hiragana, katakana, and kanji after I learned how to speak the Japanese) However. you can drop the "anata wa" since we already know who we are talking about. Nani ga suki desu ka? Now, just because we dropped the "anata wa", that doesn't mean that the "anata wa" isn't there. The soft rule of no "wa's" twice still applies. You already used a "wa" on the word "Anata," so you can't use it again. Therefore Nani ga suki desu ka?" I hope that helped! Thanks for your amazing videos! This is also somewhat of an explanation as to why you say "Sushi ga suki des," and not "Sushi wa suki des"

I fully agree with the order in which you're teaching, George. I encourage anyone who's watching these videos to get the JFZ books and / or utilize the YesJapan website. I just returned from Japan this week, and the methods really work. I have learned so much key grammar from George's videos, in an easily digested way. The thing that has taken me further than anything else is George's advice to "Use Japanese to help your Japanese." Ask questions in the language, about the language. Kocchi "こっち"at first it says つ Means "Tsu" but there is a small one っ this is usually placed before a consonant to indicate gemination. Gemination means Lengthening the consonant.

It's very interesting to see your two personalities shifting back and forth when you speak Japanese and English. It really goes to show how the language, though indirectly, influences the manner in which one speaks it, most of the time subconsciously. Ok, so I tried genki but as a 24 year old girl self studying without anyone to talk to, it didn't work for me so I dropped it, then a friend of mine told me about your books, she said it's slower and so I tried it and it's working extremely well. I love these books so much. Wish you wrote a book that would help us with vocabulary too.

There is a lot of vocabulary in the books. It introduces it in sections. I know it doesn't give you much in a way of actually learning it, though. I think a good way to do it yourself is to just write them down along with the english translation and keep copying them until they stick and maybe for the words of everyday objects you could go around the house and labbel them with the japanese translation and the english one, with sticky notes. That's what I am going to do when I finish book 1. When I go back to review and revise everything before moving on to book 2.

@@SG-jh7sw No, problem. Also when get through book 2 and on books 3-4 when Kanji starts getting introduced, I think reading japanese children's books or beginner short stories will be helpful in learning some basic vocabulary too as well as learning to read basic Kanji.

It's 2024 and George is still the best to learn Japanese. Include the fact that I`m Russian and English is my second language, your lessons very easy to understand even for me. I don`t know anybody who could be better. Your books and lessons are good way to make a perfect base for beginers for further study.

Just wanted to say that your series/books are WAYYYY easier to understand than Genki. I'm currently taking a beginner Japanese language course at my college, and our teacher (of course) uses Genki. It's set up in such a confusing way! Wakarimasen!!! So here I am going through your course and actually LEARNING Japanese!!! :D

Can I just say how lovely your videos are and so informative. You’re also very comical as well which is brilliant. I loved your “do you know Japanese... maybe” bit in your previous video I was revising and my other half burst into laughter and said “I’m so going to use that when I go to japan next” definitely brilliant idea slowly going into hiragana because I keep writing words instead of it which is making me forget what the actual word means. James P.S You should do a Japanese Pokemon video, I kept calling the Pokemon tabunne ‘its Japanese name’ but completely forgot the English name

But I have to tell you something, I hate you, not hate hate, it's not even you, I hate the fact that I bought another set of books when I saw your books on Amazon. Now I have to buy your books just because I can't live with myself listening to your courses on youtube without encouraging your great work. We get 20 minutes courses for free!! you make me feel cheap, man. 私はそれがだいきらいです。 Seriously, if I was not clear in my own rant, the work you're doing is amazing. Your lessons are fun to listen to, and i Like every minute of them. It's a old dream of mine to e able to understand japanese so that one day i'll be able to go to japan and be able to speak and make myself understood. With your lessons it can come to reality. Love the videos and using it in combination with the first book is helpful as well. I was even doing to hiragana reading practice recently (I've only just got to the next lesson so am very new) and actually found I could translate the sentence as well using the stuff covered so far (except for Imashita which I had to look up) おふろ の だいきらい な おじいさん と おばあさん が いました。 Which was a pleasant shock.

I don't think this comment would be seen as you have a lot of videos but I think your videos are awesome.. I am a cognitive neuroscience student but I decided to take up learning 日本語for my girlfriend. I have only been learning for few months now, But I use these videos to touch up on things I already know cause you have a great personality. ありがたい
