Some people just take longer to grasp concepts, even when you think you've been as obvious as possible that there should be no room for doubt. I've experienced this a lot as a teacher. As easy as it is to get frustrated and think they might not have been paying attention (which could be true) please try and give the benefit of the doubt. Some people are honestly trying their best and simply do struggle to this extent. Many I've encountered in this category have disabilities which others might be unaware of, but quite a lot of others simply struggle in that area. To anyone in this boat: big hugs. Don't give up. You can do this. Find the support you need. Ask the same question a million times if you need to. Try different sources and different methods. What works for one doesn't work for all. Believe you can do it.

Yeah, agreed. A lot of these lessons are neat, but I've avoided both the lessons and book because of his attitude. I have a hard enough time motivating myself to anything but just continuing to live, so I don't need that. Or the tendency for sounding kind of..... Condescending. Even grandiose. Great, you learned stuff in a non-traditional way so you sounded native. Great, you know both English and Japanese and how to compare them in a really good way. Just, the attitude surrounding it make it sometimes sound like noone else in history did this, nor could do it better. ") so there's obviously.... Something. XD That's noticeable. I guess, though, calling someone out and mocking their excuse does come off... A certain way, already.

Something that helps me with "want" being an adjective in Japanese is to look at it like this: you are describing something as being wanted. It is a wanted car. It is a wanted dog. Being wanted is a property that a thing can have. So like a car can be blue, a car can also be wanted. I don't know if that's obvious to everyone else, but it helps me understand it.

The problem is you don't receive the videos in a row. I have to search out each one even if it's in a playlist there's other off shoot videos that would only be included if you were on the website (which I wasn't at first) this isn't inherently a problem but for someone who doesn't realize how IN DEPTH and ACTUALLY THE BOOK the site is, you tend to at first think the videos cover the same thing, which is kinda true but the videos are sort of a review of the lesson, even though sometims they're linked at the beginning of the lesson. ((not this one)). I think purely besides people just being lazy there's just a disconnect somewhere on the line unless you're so to speak "balls deep" in it. Hi George, Thanks ever so much for your videos. I really like your approach. I've ordered some of your books and I'm really looking forward to getting them... I've been watching a lot of your videos and I feel a little sad for the people you rant about. Before discovering your channel, I had already been studying quite a lot of Japanese. As you rightfully acknowledge, we all learn from various sources. And one thing we don't do is go right back to the very beginning everytime we encounter a new teacher/new approach. We clumsily try and figure out where to branch... You tubes videos make that branching very hard. Unlike a book where you can scan through the table of content, figure out you need a quick look at chapter 2, and then can skip to chap 14... you tube gives little to no info. (And THANKS ever so much for your thumbnails that display the lesson number and main topic right there, they are PRICELESS). My 2 cents on why, maybe, you could cut them some slack? :-)

First of all sorry for may poor english. I can hear and read very well but when it comes to speak/write not so mach. Hi, I'm brazilian and I'm learning japanese through your books and genki, after start and stop a lot of times because I think the way you teach is much easier and smooth. Thanks for this great material and awsome videos. You really know how to teach a thing! And, for I consider you to teach in a better way than I found in any of my tries I'd like to ask you a question: Is it- how some people say- better to not be worried about, at first, to learn kanjis and his writings, meanings, etc but, instead, focus on learn general vocabulary and after kanjis end then, as they say, put it together like a puzzle? Example: you know the word and now you know the nakji and your brain will naturally put it togethher. Or do you recomend put things together at the very start: learn vocabulary, proper kanji writing, mening and sounds for each new word you learn?
@robertwilfred6368 жыл бұрын
I can only speak for what helped me - but I think it's important to learn the sounds and writing hiragana first. Because then you can at least write every word. From there learn vocabulary and build your speaking skill. Also learn katakana. I think people with have different methods to learn kanji. What worked for me is similar to how you explained: When I am confident I know a word like 'cat' (neko) I will learn how to write in kanji. Personally I find writing out sentences really helps me remember the kanji too.

Its kind of amazing how far the verb です will take you in Japanese. Its gonna totally throw me off when we start using different verbs.

I don't usually worry about the whole が vs. は thing, trusting that I'll pick up the nuances eventually, but apparently you can sometimes use は instead of が with ほしい or especially with ほしくない? Some online sources even say は is more common, again especially with the negative. I'm confused.
@japanesefromzero9 ай бұрын
Because は is used as an emphasizer, that makes it common when comparing things. I “want” a Toyota when looking at Honda’s would make an emphasis statement using for example.

To people who ask questions like “is this right?” And they have wrote out something taught in the lesson, how about you just add Japanese keyboard to your phone, then go to google search JAPANESE TO ENGLISH and you can type out things as you go to see if you are doing it all correctly , just a tip.... rather than waiting for youtube comments from randoms to help you

I made a post on HelloTalk today using what I learned on this video. I said "今日は寒くないでした." I meant to say It was not cold today. Past tense. And someone corrected me and said. That it should be "今日は寒くなかったです." or "今日は寒くありませんでした." So either use a different adjective ending or make it into a verb ending? I don't quite get why I was criticised.

I feel like you're being a bit harsch about the stupid questions. I get where you're coming from and I get that it's annoying, but keep in mind people are still learning and of course are making mistakes - sometimes even really stuid ones. I also feel like this might scare some away from asking questions, which I don't believe is right. Again, I get your point and I know what you're trying to say, but with the job of a teacher come stupid questions. Other than that keep up the good work. Your lessons are incredibly helpful.

Agreed. I've come across many people who simply struggle to grasp some subjects. People think they are so obvious there is no room for doubt, but all of our skills vary. What's obvious one is not for another. People who struggle tend to already be self conscious as well, so this will play into that. Please be patient and understand that some people simply struggle with certain things, and others have disabilities that make it even harder (e.g. one of my students is interested in Japan. He, like me, is autistic. I was going to recommend these videos due to the pace but I am hesitant to now as he would ask questions like this. It doesn't mean he's stupid, or not paying attention. He just struggles with some aspects).
@mysticcc3684 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't take what he said to heart, plus I don't think he was trying to call anyone stupid. He even makes mistakes all the time in his presentations and books 😂 so he can't really call anyone stupid for making mistakes because then he is too. I think what he was trying to say was that sometimes questions that might seem obvious get a little annoying. I don't think he was calling anyone stupid for not understanding just, that it's a bit weird to comment those questions, when you can just go back and watch the videos if you are unsure of something or forget anything. It probably is annoying getting asked questions in the comments when what's being asked is explained in the video. I know some people like validation that they have actually understood it tho. Anyway, he just didn't phrase it well so it came off harsher. But yeah, don't take what he said about stupid questions to heart. Everyone learns at their own pace.

Ok i have a question... When you asked us to say, '' I want a new car.'' I said...and I think it may be wrong according to your answer, '' 車の新しいが欲しいです Kuruma no atarashīga hoshīdesu. '' But i should have said, '' 新しい車が欲しいです Atarashī kuruma ga hoshīdesu. '' Why did i make that mistake? Is it cause of my italian (New car) '' Macchina nuova.'' Or just probably a mistake, or what do you think i did wrong?

Oh also why is kyou ha samui using ha, or is it another grammar rule we aren't introduced to yet. Kyou is a noun and samui is an adjective so shouldn't it be a ga? For those who don't get why I'm confused.

Do you have kanji videos? I'm practicing writing them and their English meanings..but which is more important to memorize?? The definitions/meanings or the On/Kun readings? Or maybe the compounds? Someone told me the On/Kun readings is most important (even though all the lessons I've seen so far focus on the meanings).

I hope you never explained that before^^ BUT why is it すしがおいしいです。and not すしはおいしいです。 Thank you soo much for your great work. がんばって!!
@japanesefromzero8 жыл бұрын
Both are okay. But normally there is a hidden watashi wa. So then it becomes sushi ga... I really don't think I explained that as well as I could have. When you say sushi ga oishii... you are really saying watashi sushi ga oishii. So normally adjectives use ga for this reason. But this is never really a black and white rule.

So since colors can be both i adjectives and also not, like aka vs akai, ao vs aoi, etc. Would akajanai and akakunai (as an example) be pretty interchangeable? Or are there certain times to use one over the other? Or would you have to make the color a noun with something like akano, for example, to use janai?

I see that for describing things we use が and not は. I wonder, what is the topic? Is the person making the description? For example, in 12:40 ねこがかわいいです, is it like saying "I (think) cat is cute"? Can we then explicitly add わたしは in the beginning? Or can we add あなたは to indicate "you think..."?

Dear sir, in one of your earlier videos, you said that 'na' adjective is used to directly modify a word. So, while saying new car, is saying atarashi 'na' kuruma wrong ? Please pardon me for my poor english

George-sensei, I have a question, and my apologies if it ends up sounding like a dumb question. You said that "I want a new car" is "わたらしいくるまが ほしい です" Is it wrong to say "わたらしい の くるまが ほしい です"? If so, why? Is it because わたらしい can only be used as an adjective instead of an adjective AND a noun, like "red" or "blue"?
@SeanORaigh7 жыл бұрын
1trickjohnny あたらしい is an い adjective. Like あかい or あおい (red and blue). It's true that red and blue can be nouns but you have to change the words to あか and あお in order for them to become nouns. You can't, per my understanding, take the い off あたらし。
