The plot has 3 acts, each with symbolic meaning: The intro is him saying that “Montero” is a place where people don’t hide parts of them from the world around them which prefaces how the story of the song is about accepting who you are. The first act is a version of the biblical story the garden of Eden. In this version the snake that tempts him is like a man tempting him sexually. He at first runs from this attraction, but eventually he can’t run and realizes it is what he wants so he gives in, symbolized by kissing the snake. It is important to note that the line “if eve ain’t in your garden you know that you can call me when you want” comes up multiple times in the song. He saying if a man is not happy being with women, it is okay to experiment on the dl with being gay. The second act is the one I understand the least. I think he is being put on trial for loving the way he loves while in the lyrics he admits his sexual desires, which I think is another biblical reference to the day of judgement when god judges your soul and gay people are supposedly deemed sinners. I think it also could represent how the rights and treatment of gay people is judged by society and they don’t get much of a say. The main characters pink hair in contrast with the blue hair on everyone adds to the sense of gay people being “the other” and “not belonging”. The stone statue crowd shows how from the perspective of the person being judged, the multitude of people judging them show no compassion (stone faced). The third act is Nas descending to hell. Nas is ready to ascend toward a faceless angel. The angel physically blocks the light, suggesting how the idea of heaven is oppressively anti-gay. Then the stripper pole shoots up from hell and Nas rides it down with giant braids and fishnets. The sentiment is that if everyone thinks the gays are going to hell, maybe we actually are and that’s where we want to be and we can look good doing it. It’s completely the opposite of what you would expect because it’s supposed to be in your face saying we don’t care what you think. We made the choice to live and love truthfully and we accept that that’s a different path than everyone else takes. I think the third act is very up to personal interpretation and the devil lap dance part is weird. My personal interpretation of the line “call me by your name” is that throughout this video “me” is referring to lil nas x, whose character represents the typical gay experience, and the mysterious suggestion to “call me by your name” is the invitation to take on and accept those struggles and experiences that come along with being true to your sexuality. It is saying that although you don’t get to choose if you are gay, the gay experience doesn’t choose you; if you are gay you have to make the choice to live that open life and be true to yourself. It’s a very artistic but interesting song and video and very up to interpretation. And no the video had nothing to do with him being a devil worshipper, it is about lil nas x expressing gay liberation from religious persecution after being told he's going to hell to burn for an eternity for being gay, as many lgbtq people also experience. after he is stoned to death for being gay, he is rejected by god & descends into hell. he has no other option so chooses to do it in style & own it. then, when he makes it into hell, the words inscribed on the ground translate to "they condemn what they do not understand" (exactly what you're doing). this is making another nod at religious persecution & subjetivity of who they target. many religious people have told us that having homosexual feelings is “satan teasing us/seducing us” & that if we act upon it, we are allowing for Satan to seduce/overcome us. With Lil Nas X giving Satan a lap dance, he is flipping the script & being the one to seduce Satan, gaining full control over him & killing him. 😌💋🏳️🌈

The visuals of him descending into hell remind me of the nine circles of hell in Dante's Inferno

The image of a red, horned devil is actually based on late medieval fiction like Dante's Inferno and Paradise Lost. Also, the pagan god Baphomet and illustrations vilifying Jewish people. There's a lot of very deliberate biblical imagery in this video. Lil Nas has done his research. I love him so much. 🦋💖

I love seeing so many happy, joyous reactions to this video/song. I enjoy the video and there's a lot interesting imagery/symbolism in it (time.com/5951024/lil-nas-x-montero-video-symbolism-explained/) but the song itself is amazing. (This, from a 63-year old white classical musician.)
