Kinge is right. He's not formulating it perfectly but he's right that Lil Yachty is more meme than musician at this point. He seems bigger than he is because everyone has something to say about him and a good portion of his buzz comes from ironic teenagers rather than honest-to-god fans. They know the music isn't good but it's sort of like hip hop "camp" in that its lack of quality is what you derive pleasure from. And I think Kinge is just generally correct about there being more controversy around Yachty than actual, tangible popularity. A cause cèlebré with no content.

What Myke was saying towards the end is what I was trying to say for awhile. Hip hop isn't just "boom bap", there's so many different "sub" genres to it. & ppl just gonna have to accept it. Don't have to like it but it's here. That's why I hate the term "true hip hop head" or whatever.

I'm at the 15 minute mark, and y'all got a few things twisted. First off, Lil Yachty doesn't speak for the youth as much as you think. Go to any high school, & this album won't be playing there. 💯 But his Lil Boat mixtape was actually appealing for the vibe & feeling it had throughout. Teenage Emotions was so non-cohesive, it was hard to get through. Not to mention it was 20+ tracks long. It's a chore to get through & about 10% is actually listenable. This album is NOT what Myke explained as "the music the old people don't understand". Nobody likes this shit. Second, Ken didn't exactly lay out Lil Yachty's "brand bigger than music" comments well. (which I thought made sense) So let me lay it out better. People see him on Sprite commercials & shit, and the damn near entirety of the hip hop community shits on him, but how big of a fanbase does he actually have?? I personally think that the success of the Lil Boat mixtape was attributed to it being a free listening experience. If Lil Boat was released solely on iTunes, I doubt it'd be as successful as it is. (in terms of numbers) So there's more people talking about him than listening to his music. Sorry for the long post, but I just thought I'd clear that shit up, because I was cringing super hard. Hope y'all read this. Peace
@BrandonBowditch7 жыл бұрын
lol Also, Beezy, you're the man. XD "I don't got much to say about this album, other than this shit's fuckin horrible"
@Mattwashere20137 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this is a good explanation because I was cringing too. Myke was lowkey giving Yachty a pass for this bs of an album. As much money as QC has put behind this fool, and he only moving 46k out the gate? And it's 21 tracks worth of nondefendable trash? This album exposed Yachty and his fan base, and I think Ken and lil boat are spot on with their assessment. I think Myke just lumped this album in with all the other "young music" he listens to and didn't feel credible enough to shit on it, but the "younger generation" as a whole ain't messing with this album.
@BrandonBowditch7 жыл бұрын
Mattwashere2013 Exactly. I'm not mad at Myke giving this album a pass, as much as I am mad that he would say that this album speaks for the youth. It doesn't. Kids in high school & middle school right now are not playing Teenage Emotions. They're playing DAMN. They're playing T-Wayne. They're playing Lil Uzi VS. The World. Hell, they're better likely to be playing the new Playboi Carti album, than Teenage Emotions. I agree with Ken. NOBODY LIKES THIS SHIT
@GaZaRaVe7 жыл бұрын
BowditchXD yeah that's like the one thing i don't like that they still do.. they make it a black and white issue as opposed to actually talking about.. they kinda chuck it off as " oh it's just a young thing"... no... it isn't... just like how fetty wap, trinidad james, and the rest of the 15 minutes of fame rappers weren't just for young kids.. t-wayne and silento are more for young kids... they had dance songs that get them jumpin... yachty doesn't do that... i wish they would actually stop generalizing so much
@GaZaRaVe7 жыл бұрын
BowditchXD only thing that was bothering me was ken being mad for no reason.. feefo and mike said it.. it's nothing new.. you had soulja boy, hurricane chris, yc, kreayshawn, trinidad james, fetty wap etc etc... yachty, kodak, etc are just a continuation of that.. mike was 100% right.. you were cosigning lil b but you're mad that a lil yachty showed up.. that's like giving rick ross a pass on the CO shit but then getting mad at future for saying that the whole percs and molly thing is a gimmick and he isn't actually addicted to any of it

In my opinion, I think why this album is such trash is because was it went against what made Yachty appealing to me in the first place. The Lil Boat mixtape was incredibly charming, because you had this goofy kid rapping/singing over bubblegum trap beats. It let his personality shine through and covered up whatever faults he had. It was short, simple, and unpolished. He was unique. Now you have this shit, where there's 21 tracks and it's over an hour long, the beats are uninspired garbage and the production is top notch. This albums screams wanting to be popular. It sucks out all of the charm Yachty had and gives way for his flaws to be shown up front to the listener. There are moments on the album where it tries to capture that sound Yachty had on "Lil Boat", but it sounds like a cheep knockoff than an actually Lil Yachty song. It'd be like if Ramones went from their first album and straight into this 80 minute slick prog rock epic. It really sucks that this album ended up the way it did because I really wanted it to be decent, but instead I'm let down by a really shitty album :(

I guess what I meant to say was it sounds like how a mainstream record would sound like, like it's more cleaner than "Lil Boat" but the actual beats he's doing his shit over sound bad. I just couldn't word it properly lol

I was an old head at your age too then I grew up and got into other genres and understand music more, I dislike this album but I enjoy the "Lil Boat" album because I love the way it was mastered, love the melodies, love the instrumentals, love the positive energy/message, this is feel good music that's all it is
@mfdad11197 жыл бұрын
Interesting discussion - we gotta stop writing off terrible music as something young. I often speak to college students about hiphop and there are more young people with standards than you think, so we should give the youth some credit. The previous generations didn't like our music because they didn't get it - hiphop was brand new at the time. We grew up with hip-hop so we should still understand it enough to understand the basic fact that rappers should at minimum be able to rap well. Saying "we're old, it's not for us" is an easy copout that doesn't hold people accountable to contributing quality content to this culture.

Alexis Quintana since you made this comment I feel like you can give me some insight on this question. I don't understand a lot of the new generation music, so what makes this Yatchy project trash and the other artists good? I ask because as far as I know the new gen have made it clear they don't care about rapping. So what is the new bar then? Is it the way they can make a melody?
@emulatr71847 жыл бұрын
Yeah, a lot of it has to do with the melody and mood of the songs. Their music feels like an expression of their feelings during when they were recorded. While you're listening you don't need to worry about complex lyrics and metaphors, just about the vibe it gives.

Bruce Kent Well not a really a fan but the appeal of his Lil Boat album was that it was a breath of fresh air and had sum simple light hearted but good catchy songs. This album is way too long, sounds expensive and has a lot of his throwaway tracks. Compared to his previous projects it really sounds like he sold out lol

I am 24 now and just finished graduate school so I think i can shed some light on the rise of Lil B and Yachty type music and artists. You can split their audience in two areas. One area is the younger generation who are in middle school and high school who really don't give a shit about Kendrick-esque rappers unless they hit mainstream and concentrate on rappers that are easily accessible and to be honest everyone else is listening to so you wanna fit in and not get left out. They are easier to listen to so that is a major plus for the younger generation. However at the same time I would argue that I have met many kids in high school (Juniors and Seniors) who enjoy Yachty type rappers but listen to different rappers that actually make you think and have bars that force you to pay attention (clearly not the majority but I would say a good 25%~30% of them). This is where the second audience comes in place which is essentially my generation that appreciate Yachty and Future because hey man it bumps in the whip no matter what non sense they are rapping about. Sometimes you just wanna listen to ignorant ass rap music which nasty ass trap beats because you just wanna feel good without expending too much energy in trying to decipher what the hidden message could be at either parties or anywhere else. However my generation recognizes Kendrick, Cole, Vince, Freddie Gibbs, Run The Jewels, Gambino, and Chance are clearly the better rappers in almost every way and deserve to be applauded and given awards for their hard work in keeping hip hop more diverse.

ok but you know you're generation could listen to just the intrumental versions of yachty and future songs and spare all the people around them the headache they would get from listening to their horrible rapping ...just saying or just listen to better artists who use trap beats ...if there are any ????...Idk .You don't buy thier music do you? I should hope you are not giving your money to bad mumble rappers who don't deserve it ..and I'm 25 and I REALLY don't get how anyone can see future and yachty as "fun" .. I just listened to one of his songs and immediatly wanted to puke ...that's not fun...I guess I'm too old to understand it lol ..the only people who should enjoy this are 11 - 17 year olds who have never heard kendrick,cole and RTJ like how can anyone go from listening to those artists and then go and listen to yachty and future without being discusted by their lack of effort ? I don't get it . and you say they just wanna listen to it to feel good and not expend energy in deciphering the messages but once you get the meaning of the songs by good artists ..then wouldn't it be fun? like it doesn't take long to figure out the meaning they are going for. and no offence by any of what I'm saying but I just don't get it.
@coolyouification7 жыл бұрын
I am the black wizards my guy look at this way. There are loads of people like me that listen to future and kendrick but to us it all depends on the setting and the mood we are in. Trust me nearly all the people that listed to future and yachty know that their is music if we really sit down and think about it is really bad but say you're at party, at the gym, or driving home from stressful day at work you are gonna put on that future hendrix and bang with it because it just makes you feel better and move your body. We also understand that rappers like kendrick are 50x better than yachty but imo you need to really be in the mood and right set of mindset to truly appreciate those artists. Putting on To Pimp A Butterfly at a party or a social gathering would be really awkward imo because no one really wants to dance and turn to that type of music. Some days you feelin some future and some days you want to listen to atmosphere and run the jewels. A little mix of both and appreciating both types of hip hop music wouldn't be the end of the world

I listen to Future, Migos, and Kodak song or two, Black Youngsta and even a song or two from Playboi and Uzi and then some....but this nigga Yacthy is just some trash bruh. Nothing about his voice, the way he rhymes or anything is appealing to the ear all he got is the beats, he is the definition of a artist being carried by the beat with this mumble shit. Anybody bringing he makes happy music his "happy music" just doesn't offer nothing, niggas like Kyle and D.R.A.M. and etc know how to give off good vibes and still musically sound appealing. Don't get it twisted tho i got more Kendrick, Rick Ross, Dave East, Tech N9ne, Joey, Kevin Gates, Cole, RTJ, Tory Lanez, K.A.A.N., Joyner Lucas, some Anderson Paak, some good shit from the early 2000's and 90's and more in my playlist but they all have something in there songs i want to hear for whatever reason.....but i don't see nothing about this guy Lil Yatchy that brings that feel good shit other then from a feature or two he's in and in those cases he's just in the way and the song can do without him and still do good.

bruh , people gotta stop sayin this music is the "young generations music" This aint my music, I dont listen to trash. Our music is Joey, Kendrick, Cole, Chance, Noname, and all these other fly rappers. Dont be labelin us like all we listen to is trash. Not even Staning but TPAB is one of greatest albums of the last 10 years and thats apart of our Generation. Im just sayin Edit: this was written 3 years ago in a different phase of my life, I actually make music now and have a deeper understanding of words and song and while I don't exactly disagree with my point here, there's a more complex conversation that can be had than I originally accounted for.... I feel like being "punk" is being used here to make a conflation between dissonance, aggression, and differing political views due to age gaps and yachty's bad and inconsistent songwriting. At this point in music's history, I'm not sure why we're considering Yachty punk, and if this is what being punk means, one could probably argue that that word has become useless because it has lost its political edge. Yachty upsets old people, but I don't think Yachty is furthering some cause by being, in all honesty, a lazy songwriter. In addition, it's not like there isn't music out there that is way more challenging of musical norms than Yachty. The most radical thing about Yachty is his irreverence, but I don't think that irreverence punk makes, and it's not even an irreverence that only he possesses-- just a bit louder. The question remains: what about Yachty's aesthetic necessitates that his medium be music? Because there is no revolutionary here. Fuck me, though.

The First Smooth Jazz is one of the worst sub-genres of Jazz. I don't care if other people like it or praise it, but it lacks thought, improvisation, and character. It's not terrible music, but for such a diverse and well-rounded genre as Jazz, it's not up to par.

Eden Hines True man true. It ain't Winston Marcellus or Lee Morgan.
@acemachine267 жыл бұрын
Nah, knowing Myke and his music taste its quite understandable why he wouldn't gravitate to smooth jazz. Doesn't mean he won't like other genres of jazz especially the free/avant-garde/fusion styles of jazz like Peter Brotzmann's Machine Gun or Mahavishnu Orchestra's Inner Mounting Flame for example.
