When I was working at the gothic shop, a lot of younger kids would come in and ask for 'that devil symbol' or 'that satan star thing' as a pendant or patch or whatever. It always made us laugh and we sometimes tried to explain a little about the pentagram and its meanings.

ARE YOU AWARE THE DEVIL IS EVIL AND YOUR BELIEF SYSTEM IS A SUB CULTURE ALL CREATED BY THE DEVIL SATAN. THE INVERTED PENTAGRAM IS THE ANTICHRIST. IN SOME CATHOLIC CHURCHES YOU WILL SEE A PENTAGRAM IN THE STONE WORK WHICH IS THE STAR OF BETHLEHEM. ONCE THE DEVIL BORROWED IT TODAY NO MATTER IF IT IS INVERTED OR UPRIGHT IT IS NOW AFFILIATED TO SATAN. YOU HAVE A INNOCENTS ABOUT YOU SO MY ADVISE TO YOU IS TO STAY CLOSE TO GOD AND CHRIST. THERE IS A HELL AND GOD CREATED IT FOR ALL THOSE WHO OPPOSE GOD/CHRIST. HERE IS A FOOTNOTE. THE DEVIL'S POWER COMES FROM GOD AS A MEANS TO WEAVE OUT THE GOOD FROM THE BAD AND THE LOYAL FROM THE DISLOYAL AND GOD CAN REMOVE SATAN'S POWER AT ANYTIME GOD PLEASES.. DO NOT DO ANY MAGIC OR YOU WILL INVITE THE DEVIL AND THE FALLEN ANGELS INTO YOUR LIFE. YOU SEEMS TO BE A GENTLE INNOCENT SOUL WHO HAS A TENDENCY TO HELP OTHERS. THIS IN TURN IS A THREAT TO SATAN'S AGENDA AND THE ONLY WAY THEY CAN HARM YOU IS TO LURE YOU INTO MAGIC, ETC WHERE YOUR VEIL OF PROTECTION FROM GOD WHICH YOU WERE BORN WITH IS REMOVED FOR GETTING INVOLVED IN THOSE THINGS THAT ARE PART OF THE DEVIL SATAN AGENDA. AT THIS POINT THEY WILL DESTROY YOU SO TAKE THIS ADVISE I GIVE TO YOU STRONGLY.

THE PENTAGRAM IS WHAT YOU SEE ON TOP OF A CHRISTMAS TREE WHICH SYMBOLIZES THE STAR OF BETHLEHEM. THE DEVIL SATAN TOOK THAT STAR OF BETHLEHEM AND INVERTED IT SYMBOLIZING THE ANTICHRIST. SATANISTS DO USE IT IN BOTH ITS UPRIGHT FORM AND INVERTED FORM. A WORD TO THE WISE AND ALWAYS REMEMBER THERE IS ONLY ONE POWER IN THIS UNIVERSE AND THAT POWER IS GOD/CHRIST. GOD CREATED HELL NOT THE DEVIL SATAN. THIS SYMBOL OF THE INVERTED PENTAGRAM IS IN OPPOSITION TO EVERYTHING CHRIST SAID. MY ADVISE TO YOU IS GET YOURSELF A BIBLE AND DISTANCE YOURSELF FROM THIS KIND OF STUFF BECAUSE IN THE END THE DEVIL WILL BE LAUGHING AT YOU AS YOU PERISH INTO HELL. LET ME ALSO WISH YOU A MERRY, MERRY CHRISTMAS.

I wear pentagrams (both ways), too :) For me they represent magic: for me one point up equals white magic and two points up equal black magic. And now as for black magic: it doesn't necessarily mean something bad either. It can also mean to protect someone by using brutal force on the aggressor or his/her weapon, so it can no longer harm anyone at least for the moment (white magic would be protecting while using a shield or something similar).

I am sixty years old. In my younger years I favored the “Biker Culture” because it was rebellious and tough. I have also always considered myself an artist. As I got older I moved away from rebellion for a while and started raising a family. When members of the “establishment” ruined all of that, I decided to return to my biker past. However, hard-core bikers are too violent and cruel, so I decided to look to gothic culture to combine with my biker persona in order to separate myself. My biker side is my defensive side and my gothic side is my thoughtful side, while both are counter-culture / anti-establishment. I try hard to make both sides as legit as possible while not really being a true member of either. Thank you for helping me understand my gothic side better.

Great video! Very informative... At the end of the day... As a Born Again Christian I believe symbols are simply what that individual makes it be for them. If a person takes a cross... One person wears the cross right side up.... Another wears it upside down... Does this change the symbol itself? No.... The same symbol only a statement that the wearer decides it's meaning yet the symbol itself does not determine the heart of the wearer. I do not see pentagrams or pentacles as being evil at all. It is a neutral symbol... Natural device if you will.... Just as a Ouija Board is a neutral device... It is not good nor evil.... The actions and intent of each individual will determine much. I personally wear a clear quartz crystal that lives around my neck much of the time. Many church Christians frown upon these things.... I love Jesus... Yet belong to no church building since I never fit into that mold. Christ is in my heart, not stuffed away in a building on Sunday.... God knows my heart for wearing my Crystal.... I also don't judge those who choose to wear pentagrams... I would much rather talk to a person and learn of their heart rather then form a judgment based off how they dress or appear.

My thoughts exactly. Just because I think the upside down pentagram looks beautiful, it doesn't mean I'm worshipping Satan by wanting to have one around my neck. I'm still going to be a Christian regardless. Besides, anything that isn't Christian is not necessarily "evil," just different that's all. Those who say that the symbol is evil because satanists use it are implying that satanists are evil and that's just really rude.

Fun fact, the inverted cross is the cross of St.Peter. When he was crucified he begged that he would be crucified upside-down as he didnt want to be crucified the same way as Jesus. An act of reverence if you will. More Christians should wear the inverted cross, it is an original Christian symbol afterall.

jimbo meh - Let's be honest! The upside down cross is a satanic symbol! It's used by satanists. A devout, Bible believing, practising Christian, WILL NOT wear an upside cross or a pentagram. For a christian to believe that 'symbols' are neutral is niave at best!

@@purplegemcrazyroyal5247 To reject your own faith's ancient symbols that were used by the faithful for hundreds of years because a small group of people you dislike also decided to use them is naive at best. I wear it because it is a symbol of the 5 elements, the goddess Venus, and protection. We are all made of star dust, so for me, star symbols always give the connotation of mysticism and "connection to the universe". Also, I happen to love the balanced geometry of stars - they look pretty! Personally, I do identify as an atheist Satanist, but not a LaVeyan, so I also like the symbolism of the star as a goat's head, representing the connection of both our cosmic origins (our bodies are made of starstuff) and the animal nature of humanity. I also like the star with one point up, as a symbol of humanity (as it has the same geometry as a human body, with arms and legs outsretched.) . The pentagram is such a complex symbol, and I find it really interesting how it means such different things to different people.

I felt it important to mention that even if the pentagram is a symbol for LaVeyan Satanism, LaVeyan Satanism actually has nothing to do with Satan and is more like an embellished form of atheism. So the pentagram STILL isn't satanic or evil by any means. On a side note, thank you for making these excellent, informative videos. I feel a lot of people need to know this.

Misty Ghosts thank you! I felt I was unfair about Satanism when I watched the video after the upload, but then, until now, no Satanist has said anything about it either. It's just the most frustrating thing about this all, that people immediately assume "SATAN" when they see the pentagram. This is why I might sound a bit resentful towards Satanism in general here, more because the people also generalise it. Yeah but good point, maybe someone should do a video explaining satanism, paganism and wicca, because so many people have misconceptions about those regarding the goth subculture...

That is the self alchemy, the inner transformation, to raise up our nature. but even still satan isnt necassirly bad because other than the lesser nature it represents the subconscious mind aka the underworld. The bible story jesus dies goes to hell takes the keys from hell and is reborn. that is what we must do.

This is pretty good, and covers a lot of bases. As a pagan, I personally use the pentagram both upright and inverted, as representative of the elements. The upright pentagram having the single point of 'spirit' at the top above the earthly elements to represent 'Ascending from Matter', and the inverted pentagram with the single point of 'spirit' at the bottom underneath the earthly elements to represent 'Descending into Matter'. 'Ascending from Matter' (the upright pentagram) to me as symbolic of a Right Hand Path belief system (Ascending to the divine, leaving behind earthly ways, becoming closer to god/the gods) and 'Descending into Matter' (the inverted pentagram) symbolic of a Left Hand Path belief system, and bringing the divine into/closer to yourself/self deification. I love how it can have different special significance from person to person though, and I love it's different uses throughout history :)
@lilachris7 жыл бұрын
+Industrial Strength thank you very much for this detailed explanation 😊 I used to wear the upright pentagram to symbolise that the spirit stands above the earthly elements and the inverted pentagram to symbolise the reverse, so as to protest against how the world is greedy and materialistic. But this description sounds much more thought through! Is that a common pagan belief?
@HCKTrent7 жыл бұрын
lilachris In honesty, i am not sure if its a common pagan belief- i have met other pagans who think/understand the same and i have read it a few places (though I can never remember where), but it is not something i have come across very often. I'm always looking for other sources on this though. One thing i like about the 'Ascending from Matter/Descending into Matter' interpretation, is that it aknowledges and stays quite true to other uses of the pentagram in other beleif systems. such as the upright pentagram in its uses in various belief systems that can be considered 'Right Hand Paths' such as wicca, and perhaps even christianity, as a symbol of ascension/enlightenment, and the inverted pentagram's use in satanism, (and even second degree wicca) as a symbol of bringing the spirit/divine into ones self as characteristic of various Left Hand Path beleif systems, where the focus is is toward the betterment of the self.
@lilachris7 жыл бұрын
I think you are right that many of these interpretations are quite similar, although they appear in completely different contexts. That seems to give the symbol a lot of power. I'd like to use this interpretation of ascending/descending, because it seems to fit very well with what I've thought before, but I will have to look up where it's from eventually. There is so much more to discuss in this topic! I haven't even looked at many of the places it's used in. But generally, I feel with the discussion in the comments, we get much closer to covering it all :) thank you!

Angel of Death there are many gods in the universe. Hell isn’t real, only your suffering from your negative past experiences is YOUR “hell”. Plus, anyone who “sins” till they die are simply reincarnated to re-learn their karmic lesson. You keep on reincarnating if you don’t learn your lesson. Why? Because there is no “computer programmer” to this vast infinite universe that controls the destiny of life. The only forces that dictate nature and humans throughout many universes, is LOVE, or HATE. POSITIVE, or NEGATIVE. YIN and YANG. It’s the force of duality. The whole point of inverted pentagrams basically symbolizes looking inward of the self to conquer your demons, your monsters, your fears, so that you may live in harmony within yourself and within the world you live in. “Heaven” is just a term to describe moving into higher dimensional realities because that’s really where your soul goes if you’ve lived your life consciously aware of balancing your “sins” and good deeds. If opposite, you just reincarnate. I feel bad you live your life in constant fear with that mindset. Set yourself free bro.

Very nice presentation! As a Witch for over 45 years I was taught the "pentacle" was a five pointed star within ha circle (the circle representing the cycles of birth, life, death, etc...), "pentagram" just the five pointed star (I've studied many different traditions, am an Elder and Third degree in Wicca - too much dogma for me - and all trads said the same). The right side up pentacle or pentagram, represented either the Goddess, the feminine within each of us, or simply man in general. The inverted pentacle or pentagram represented the God or the masculine within each of us ( most Wiccan trads taking it to mean the "Horned God") and your aim was to integrate both feminine and masculine and both light and dark to become whole. Denying one side creates imbalance, which is where I start having trouble with some sects of Wicca. I am a Witch, I do my own thing and expect no one to do the same (nor require it), I'm spiritual, not religious. I accept all, and expect the same respect. That was the short version! I could go on and on how people have perverted a symbol to represent evil, but you already did that! ⚡️Jet

Thank you very much for your input! I am happy so many experts gather in my comments to take this discussion further! Definitely the two-sidedness of the symbol is interesting to me, which is in accordance with what others have also already commented.
@RnR-Rebel7 жыл бұрын
lilachris You're very welcome! I think the duality of the symbol is what confuses people thinking one is "good", the other "evil". If you want to get technical, there is no good or evil magick (another one of my beefs with many Wiccan trads), it's all neutral. It's what the practitioner does with the magick that changes its meaning to one or the other. For example, hexes. Many won't touch them, think they're "evil". I'm the queen of hexing! Once you get to a certain level of understanding, have that balance i mentioned, you can create positive hexes that actually help. But I suppose that's a whole other subject! ⚡️Jet

I actually wear both pentagram and pentacle. I started when I was 10 and during this time in my life I was forced to attend church (not very good memories in that place). I realized very quickly how hypocritical, homophobic and mean the people where at my christian church so I purposefully went out and bought my first pentagram. All I knew was that these people feared this symbol and so I wore it to church so that they would avoid me and it worked. Eventually, I researched what these symbols meant and to this very day I wear these symbols as a sign of rebellion against religious ideals that preach hate and stir fear of damnation into the minds of adults and children. I also wear it as protection and a sign of the spirit and the elements.

I wear a Pentacle, or Pentagram.... 1 point up and 2 points down.. I found that it's a much more effective "thing" if you want to call it that, for protection, than wearing a cross... as I'm a Christian Wiccan. It has for me been much better in protection, as I've noticed, when I don't wear mine, especially at night when I sleep, it's as if something keeps shaking me awake.... when I wear mine, I feel more at ease, and also, I noticed that I'm not as prone to spiritual attacks then, as I were before I got it. I use to get attacked spiritually by I don't know what exactly, than when I wear it. I know I sound super crazy when I say it, but I don't dare take it off, as I noticed, "things" one can't normally see with the naked eye, don't dare touch me when I wear it. I know I'm also Clairvoyant, and someone told me that because I'm Clairvoyant that "things" I don't really can't see that well, will always be attracted to me, and that I'll always be an open target...

@@BloodHuntress Okay, when it comes to natural forms of light and darkness, yes, God is both because he created both. So if you are referring to the natural forms of those things, yes. However, if you are referring to Light as goodness and Darkness as evil then it's a big no. God is Light in this case and only Light. So, if you don't mind, I'll share with you my perspective on magic vs the divine. It is in the realm of the divine, that being God created, prescribed, and done with his power, where prayer, miracles and so on comes from. The realm of magic, in the Christian perspective, as has been taught by the historical church, has more to do with the powers of the demons and satan as they are things that are done outside the realm of the divine power associated with God, such as spells. As well meaning as someone may be with them, whether it's white magic or black magic. If it is not from God, then it is from the demons. This is more so to do with actual spells, magic conjurations, ect. Looking in the mirror, practicing a speech and so on, as far as I see it, has nothing to do with magic. it's just a physical thing. Listen, I say this because you saying you're a Christian-Wiccan is a bit of an issue with the Christian perspective, as well meaning as you may be. The faith has taught against witchcraft and so on, historically.(Granted I don't believe that persecuting and hurting people who practice it is a good thing.). In my opinion, it's more of a case of, who do you worship? Do you worship the Triune God, follow his commandments and so on which say to avoid magic and witchcraft as has been described? Forgive me if I come off as rude, as I think you are well meaning, and I appreciate these kind of talks. It's just, as far as I have learned, magic and Christian Faith aren't things that can be mixed. Of course you could have a different definition of magic, but I believe i've made a case for the type of magic I am defining here. Thank you for your reply, however.

This was nice to learn: the pentagram/pentacle was a symbol to ward of evil. I find it slightly ironic that it was even so in the Christian church at one point, but that I sometimes find that the zealots of that religion are whining about goths wearing it in the present time. I personally don't wear pentagrams/pentacles on my clothing, because it can be interpreted as a religious symbol of the Wiccan religion. I promised myself to never wear religious symbolism anywhere on my clothing. Basically, it's because I don't want to offend anyone's religion by accident. I mean, people jump to conclusions (me included). If someone I actually care about assumes that I'm wearing a pentagram to be sacreligious, they might break off all contact with me over that assumption... Without asking me why I wear it or starting a discussion about it with me, of course. Now I think that's cowardly, and I'm usually sort of glad that they're gone afterwards. That's not the type of person I want in my social circle anyway. But I can't say that situations like that leave me completely unshaken. I can't really be arsed to care about random strangers harassing me over it. I usually think 'Don't you have better things to do than freak out over what a complete stranger is wearing?' But in the area where I live, some of them can get really creepy. Following you while yelling at you and stuff, throwing empty energy drink cans at you, etc. I say no thank you to situations like that. I've already went through some traumatic events during my school days, that still mess with my sense of safety 7 years later. I'm not going to purposefully cause anxiety and panic attacks in myself by unintentionally making myself a target to creeps like that. So really, I'd just prefer to avoid all of that nastiness, and just leave the wearing of religious symbols to the people with more backbone than me. xD

Melanie Adrianus Yes of course that is very ironic! I agree! and of course you have every right to choose not to wear certain symbols. If you just don't feel comfortable with a pentagram around your neck, then it wouldn't give you any magical protection anyway probably. It is always right to do what feels right with those things I believe 😊

I'm a christian goth. I love studying symbols. Yes, the pentagram is a symbol of the five elements but the meaning goes deeper as well. But from my understanding, the way I learned it is that when the star is right side up, the elements of earth(representing fertility/abundance) and fire(representing passion/inspiration) on the legs, water(representing emotion/self-expression) and air(representing reason/communication) are on the arms, and Spirit(God) is at the head. Because God is at the head, all the elements are in balance with God, nature, and the self. But when the Pentagram is inverted, Spirit(God) is at the bottom. The inverted pentacle symbolizes placing the self before God and one's own desires and passions above others. The upright pentacle says "I am God's vessel", while inverted pentacle says "I am my own god".

I knew nothing about the Christian history of the pentagram, or how recent its association with Satanism is. I do not own anything with the pentacle on it, aesthetically I don't care for it much, but now that I am more educated on its meaning and origin, I think I would feel comfortable wearing one somewhere.

Thank you for sharing this information, and also to the comments given, very helpful. I've briefly researched the uses of the pentagram and the pentacle (within the circle) so I knew what you were talking about. Yet, not until today watching your presentation did I find a valid meaning for me to wear this symbol. I've loved it for years but am not Jewish, Wiccan, Christian or Satanist. I want to have relevance if I wear symbols. I'm a pantheist and after listening again, I have finally clicked. My connection to the elements, the power of the mind, the connection to the cosmos and the overall connectedness I feel to our natural world and universe is my personal take on the meaning of this symbol. Thank you.

the pentacle is the star with one point faced up, and that point represents spirit/soul. the other points represent the elements we are made of (earth, fire, water, etc). the pentagram is the star with one point faced down which is a satanic (inverted) pentagram. the circle around one or the other star represents the witches circle that keeps bad spirits out (for the pentacle) and it keeps the bad spirits inside (for the pentagram)

The Kilted Goth The Jews are still waiting for the Messiah to come as they don't believe that Christ was the real one. Do you happen to know if they still use the pentacle as that sign? I don't think so, but then I don't know any Jewish people, so I might be wrong...
@TrevorParkerTheKiltedGoth7 жыл бұрын
valumen To be honest I don't know. I will certainly try and find out . Lots of people mistake it for the star of David . Im wondering if that stR is a twist on the pentagram. And Christ is a descendant of David. It was prophesied that in the last days Jews would turn to Christ as the messiah . Going through London a few years back I passed a big building called Jews for Christ.. it it coming to pass .
@TrevorParkerTheKiltedGoth7 жыл бұрын
Judaism The pentagram was the official seal of the city of Jerusalem during the period of 300-150 B.C.E. Due to the similarity of the star shapes, it is occasionally confused with the Star of David by those unfamiliar with the symbols. In the Jewish kabbalistic tradition, the pentagram represents justice, mercy, wisdom, understanding, and transcendent splendor. So a possibility thats how its viewed now.
@valumen7 жыл бұрын
The Kilted Goth Thank you so much! That is very interesting to me (and most likely not only to me ;-)). I know that quite a number of Jewish people have acknowledged Christ as their savior, but the majority is still... well, anticipating, I guess. But as God's own people God will know how to deal with them. ;-) I find it so special how many of us (I do include myself here) need to express ourselves through symbols and how the same symbol can have different meanings to different people- so we can misunderstand each other not by language only. Yay.

I know this is late, but LaVey (and Satanism) uses the upside-down pentagram to symbolise carnality and a rejection of the spiritual (the upwards pentagram being spiritual). He got the idea from the cover of a 1964 book "a Pictoral history of Magic and the Supernatural" which details both versions of the pentagram under the "Satanic Sciences" area of the book. Also good to note that the Church of Satan (and Satanism) isn't devil worship. So I wear the symbol for 2 reasons. 1 - because It's a nice symbol, and 2- because it's the official symbol of my religion and the store I got it from (that licenses the trademarked Church of Satan symbol) is high quality and well-made
@KreeZafi7 жыл бұрын
Very nice video, I really appreciate this series and the research that clearly went into it! :D I personally identify strongly with the ideas of LaVeyan Satanism, although I consider it a little more of a philosophy than a religion and generally call myself an atheist rather than a Satanist just to avoid the misunderstandings (I certainly don't have time to give a lengthy explanation of what LaVeyan Satanism is every darn time just to make people understand I'm not a devil worshiper). Because of this, the pentagram jewelry I own are all inverted - yes, I know that the inverted pentagram is not in itself a symbol of the Church of Satan, but I wear it that way because it resembles their symbol, the Sigil of Baphomet (I also have a necklace with that particular symbol), and I can get behind the sort of elemental balance type meaning as well, which I think it can symbolize whether it's inverted or not so I just choose the inverted one to kind of distinguish it from the Wiccan/pagan one which is usually one-point-up.
@lilachris7 жыл бұрын
KreeZafi I hope you didn't think I was insulting the Church of Satan in general, it's just the most annoying thing that people always jump to that one conclusion when they see you. And of course what I meant to say is that every symbol has many different meanings and everyone wears it for different reasons.

Muhammad is the messenger of Allah who has helped Allah spread the religion and according to our beliefs, Isa (Jesus) was sent to Earth to do the same thing as Muhammad but Christians got it wrong and thought he was the son of God. And idk for what but according to OUR beliefs, Isa (Jesus) did not die yet. He is currently living in heaven and will come out in the last day when Dajjal (illuminati/ satan) will come out and Isa will fight the Satan. And Muhammad married Khadija, who was not 9. Thank you. And he never molested little girls. I never heard christians or other religions say that! Which world are you in??

I also wear a pentagram with an inverted cross.... For me it represents the 5 elements and the middle section of the pentagram represents our body and the inverted cross for me represents the removal of religious blindfolds over spirituality..... As in Hindu teachings our utmost goal is to awaken spiritually weather you are a true believer of god or an atheist till the time your objective is clear.... Your form is irrelevant.... So for me this whole symbol represents open mind for spirituality..... M a Hindu....

The pentagram is the symbol most associated with witchcraft. However, the pentagram originally had nothing to do with witchcraft and has been associated with many things over the millenia. A pentagram has no circle around it and is a symbol that was created in Greece over 8,000 years ago and had an astrological connection. It is strongly associated with Venus. An encircled pentagram (sometimes called a pentacle) with one point up is what is associated with witchcraft. Wiccans associate each point with one of the four elements with the top point representing "Spirit". An encircled pentagram with one point down is called The Sigil of Baphomet as titled by The Church of Satan. I think either one looks cool, but like you said in your first symbol video, if you are going to own anything with symbols and wear symbols, you should know what they really mean. I can't take Wiccans seriously for a number of reasons. A big one is the fact that they decided to make the pentagram an important part of their practice but they assigned their own meaning to it. This is wrong. Wicca is only 64+ years old. The pentagram has been around for several millenia.

The inverted pentagram is not evil, but it's wrong because it symbolises a human with the head and spirit on the floor, it means a society who has not developed its consciousness and lives in ignorance, a society that is dominated by the basic instincts.
@lilachris7 жыл бұрын
+Therocklover1978 yes I've heard about that meaning too. I just couldn't find where it comes from. Do you know who or which religion did use it as that? It kind of ties in with the ordered cosmos theory though. I've read that someone saw the pentacle as a symbolic human who then stands for the whole of the universe. If it's an inverted pentagram, the order of the universe is upside down.

Hi, Lila, I heard that from a man called Mark Passio, he said he was a priest on the Anton Lavey's Church of Satan, He also said that satanists rule the world through intitutions (Governments and religions) and they want to drive us away from the natural law, so we can not evolve, but they know, follow and respect the natural law, that's why they use the inverted pentragram on us; that is Mark Passio's theory, he has many interesting videos on his channel about satanism, occutisim and government.

To my great amusement, a goth friend of mine who has a LOT of pentagram/pentacle jewelry and clothes periodically gets accused of be evil or a satanist by random hyper-conservative old ladies (she lives in Kansas, so there's a decent number of biblethumpers.) Why is this so funny? She's evangelist. She likes pentagrams because of their historical usage as a way of warding off demons and evil spirits. (She's also very interested in the occult - and yes, she is very, very different from most evangelists, and spends a decent amount of her time being exasperated by hyper conservative Christians in general - especially other evangelists. It's part of why I get along with her.)
