So I've decided to start a little series on the topic of symbols that are commonly seen in the gothic subculture. In this first episode I am starting with a brief definition of the terms sign and symbol, then I'm talking a little bit about the Ankh symbol. I hope that you are interested in this topic, please let me know what you think about in in the comments! Also, what kind of symbols should I talk about?

When I was in Jr. High School (3 year transition between primary and high school, I was 12 years old)-- We had a history teacher who was obsessed with Egypt, Egyptian culture and history. The entire year we learned about Egypt. We got to touch papyrus, recreate small mummies using this clay colored fluid that she said was almost identical to what was used historically-- I can still remember that smell-- And by the end of the class she wanted us to be able to read hieroglyphics. She would write sentences in hieroglyphics for tests and we had to interpret their meaning. It was VERY interesting! It was because of her that when I was approached by an offended North African couple while I was wearing my big silver ankh who asked me 'Do you even know the meaning of what you're wearing or did you buy it because it looks nice?' I gave them the full definition and history, verbatim (lol) that Mrs. Darab had given us on our key sheet. It shut them right up! I think I was 16 so the information was still fairly fresh in my brain :)

Angela Benedict Mrs. Darab sounds like she was a very devoted educator 👌🏼 Were you Steiner schooled by any chance? Your experiences sound so similar to that of one of my children in regards to learning about Egyptian culture.

Munstermash1313 She was an amazing woman. She also did a lot of humanitarian work in Egypt and told us a story I'll never forget that she called 'The smell of blood on a hot day.' A young man was caught in the crossfire of a terrorist attack and he was in a hospital, alone and frightened. She sat with him and kept him company until his parents could be reached. She said there was no air conditioning in the hospital in the heat of the desert and this boy had an open wound-- The heat had exacerbated the smell of the blood. This caused her aversion to the smell of our copper pennies. The school was was just a regular public school. Gulf Middle School located in Cape Coral, Florida. They just lucked out by getting someone as devoted and intriguing as Mrs. Darab for a history teacher.

The ankh is my favourite symbol and I am gothic. I have been gothic since I was a child and I have always been fascinated by Ancient Egypt. Whenever I had to do a project about another country, I chose Ancient Egypt whether the project was for Social Studies, Visual Arts or Travel and Tourism. While I had seen ankh necklaces in a couple of shows I watched, I didn't truly become familiar with the ankh until it became an important symbol in my favourite show when I was 14. The show is called Dark Oracle and it is about a twin brother and sister who came across a comic book called Dark Oracle that actually predicted their futures and kept entering their lives with new issues. The comic features characters that are supposed to be them but the comic book characters have different names. There were some gothic characters, but the ankh was connected to a main character's (she is the furthest thing from gothic) comic book counterpart. Anyways, I love the ankh and I own some nice ankh jewelry. I want more!

Since I'm from Egypt, I studied in history class that the Ankh was mainly a symbol of life due to its ties to the river nile, we didn't even call it "Ankh" we called it "key of life" or "key of the Nile" so you are correct about its meaning being mainly about life 😊

I really think goths wear the ankh a lot because of its connection to ancient Egypt and ancient Egypt's connection to the occult. Just a theory, though. The symbol has a really beautiful and personal meaning to me.

The sandal strap is the most popular theory Lila and is probably correct. Before the Roman period the ancient Egyptians didn't use keys - (another theory I've heard says its a key - the 'Key of Life') If you look at old carvings of the hieroglyph for 'ankh' it does look like a sandal strap - you put your foot through the loop with the long stem between your big toe and your second toe. The end of the long stem attaches to the front of the sole of the sandal and the side stems attach to the sides of the sole. Great video.
@lilachris
@lilachris 7 жыл бұрын
thank you for the extra input! I've heard this theory multiple times myself now, so I assumed it must be the most plausible.
@Skiamakhos
@Skiamakhos 7 жыл бұрын
The sandal strap thing made me think of a series of pictures my parents have on the wall in their hall, which they bought while in Egypt. It depicts a wedding ceremony, in the ancient Egyptian style, with hieroglyphs and so on. The bride and groom each wear one sandal from the same pair, indicating that they are now one. If as you say the ankh and the sandal are related then this has a deeper significance than them being each half of a pair of sandals - it shows that their lives are both part of a paired life together. I think that's beautiful. :-)

This is a fabulous video! Thank you for making this :D I have heard that the Ankh can also symbolize union (one part of the symbol representing female and one representing male), also it can illustrate the sun on the horizon line. I think a lot of Goths wear the symbol since it can represent eternal life, and that links us to our interest in vampires, too. Those are just some ideas I dug up in research before I started wearing Ankhs. I'm not sure how much of it actually is attached to the Egyptian meaning.
@lilachris

Not to be glib, but as an old ex-goth, often the symbols we used, actually meant "hey I'm a goth, and I hope other goths identify me as one of them". Yes there are many signifieds for given signifiers but in the context of the subculture I strongly suspect that it is part or a game of signs where we could build and experiment with identity. The signs gain new and powerful meanings within the specific social context and despite that we were probably not aware of it then, we loaded them with our own meaning and significance particular to us.
@lilachris
@lilachris 7 жыл бұрын
shadowcop75 yes of course! I don't remember if I say this in this or in the second episode, but of course we also want attention with our symbols! And most of all to be recognised as goth/alternative or whatever we want to be.

Personally the ankh is one of my favorite symbols relating to goth culture for several reasons: 1) ancient Egyptian culture had a much more holistic understanding of the symbiotic relationship between life and death than the culture I am most familiar with (modern American), which tries instead to hide and run from death. 2) the use of the symbol on a dagger in the classic vampire movie The Hunger 3) Death in the Sandman series 4) The Sisters of Mercy and other early goth bands using ancient Egyptian symbols like the eye of Horus on album covers and such (cleopatra records in general too)

You didn't mention a famous character from Sandman comics. She was called Death and she wore Ankh symbol on her neck all the time. Her look is very iconic for goths as well and had quite big influence on the subculture itself I think.

I love this video and the whole concept for the series! Just like you said, occult imagery and symbols are such a big part of the gothic culture especially at the moment. I personally don't feel comfortable wearing a symbol if I don't know what it means or if it holds a significant meaning to a group of people and I'm not a member of that group. I feel like I'm appropriating their beliefs. Maybe I'm over thinking it?
@lilachris
@lilachris 7 жыл бұрын
thank you! well, sometimes I think we should all relax a little bit more around symbols. that is why I introduced this series with the definition of signs and symbols. we should always bear in mind that these meanings are man-made and depend on the culture and context they are used in. As long as you yourself can give a satisfactory answer as to what this symbol that you are wearing means, can mean and means to you personally, I see no harm at all.

well, i have never heard about the sandal strap reference, it might be true though. but usually pharos"kings" used to have this symbol as an accessory or jewelry, because kings or high class people were worshiped as gods and there for symbolized as a key of life, and it was an easy way to notice them among the society i guess, the ankh symbol among other things. Jewelry and make up were used by male and female of higher states, it could mean different things.

@lilachris
@lilachris 7 жыл бұрын
Samuel Smith that's a good question, as I have never studied in the US, I can't really be sure. I understand that Americans call all kinds of further studies after school "college" but then there are also both colleges and universities in the US. But I don't really know the exact differences. Can you get an M.A. or M.Sc. degree at every college in the US?

I have never fully understood why but ankh used to be pretty common among goths at some point. The sign itself is not really gothic but it has been hijacked/adopted into the subculture. You occasionally see goth stores sell ankh jewellery, t-shirts or patches, etc. Been a while since i saw ankh last time but it definitely has a assosiation with gothic subculture. Even band 69 eyes mentioned ankh in their song gothic girl that more or less plays on the stereotypical description of goth girl: "stigmata from crucifixion on her pale white skin tribal pagan art she loves her tattood egyptian mark" Egyptian mark referring to ankh as shown in the respective music video. It's just one example but it's build on stereotype and those come from nothing even if they are not stone carved truths. Some reason why i personally think ankh got into gothsubculture(not facts but speculations): Similarly pentagrams, crosses, ouija boards, tarot cards or astrological signs has absolutely nothing to do with goth originally but fascination with mysticism and otherworldy led them to be part of it. Also whole look of the subculture has been build on many things but it draws heavy influence from victorian horror and since mummy joined the cast of classic 19th century movie monster cast alongside with Dracula and Frankensteins monster etc it's not totally far fetched that anything related to Egyptian lore would be adopted into the subculture. Continuing with popculture in Anne Rice's vimpire cronicles vampires originate from ancient eqypt or somewhere close i i remember right. Not sure if she was the first author to play with the idea of eqyptian vampires but it has been done few times afterwards. And you know goths love their vampires and undead in general.

@lilachris
@lilachris 7 жыл бұрын
+ThatRandom - Dude well it's the darkest colour available 😉 but it really seems to stem from Victorian mourning dresses as far as I know. The 18th and 19th century saw a great popularity for gothic novels and then Queen Victoria never stopped wearing her black mourning outfits, read up on that if you're interested, it's fascinating!

Now I see why there is so little understanding on the ankh. This symbol is the symbol of life like she said but it is not a gothic symbol. Most people who wear it follow kemetic principles. It's really like telling people a cross is a symbol of satan. This is why everyone is so afraid of african spirituality. If you really want a clear understanding of the ankh go to the source (people of color), or look up Kemit cause this is very disturbing how they are using this symbol.

COREY T. ROGERS I got the symbol tattooed on my arm. Did I win? She's still got a point though even if you drop fancy quotes you could wear on a shirt. Symbols are driven by the same schizmogenetic variables you'll find in any other traditional variety.
