The Oriq threat is ever growing as the cabal of exiled mages using forbidden magic plan something devastating for Strixhaven, school of young mages. Liliana Vess is interested in stopping these wizarding thugs but she returned to Strixhaven for another purpose.
Since the War of the Spark, Liliana has been riddled with guilt over the sacrifice made by Gideon Jura. He took a killing spell to protect her, and she doesn't understand why. She believes her old college of Witherbloom within Strixhaven could hold ancient spells powerful enough to really resurrect Gideon. Not as a zombie, but fully intact, as if he never died in the first place.
Now she meets with the founder of the Witherbloom, the Elder Dragon Beledros, to discover what secrets could bring Gideon Jura back to life.

Let's be real, that makes as much sense as Gun x Sword when the MC used that logic for his wife's death. You could give a million better reasons but that's one of the most stupid you could earnestly make. Gideon was all about making up for his mistake of getting people killed following his lead, if he had more to give it only makes sense he would do so. Otherwise, what point would there have been in doing good instead of just drowning in a puddle right after he fucked up?

The narrative obsession with not letting characters actually die is absurd. Gideon has a good run and he died in the fight with the Big Bad. Leave him be. From a story telling perspective, undoing death is weak and makes every adversity faced by heroes less meaningful. And as a fan, Gideon isn’t a big fan favorite. He’s the rather bland, early manifestation of mono white in a planeswalker. It’s not like they liked fan fave jace. Let Gideon stay dead, don’t give us that death means nothing garbage in our magic story, and progress the story.

@@danumd87 I had this reaction at first as well but it does seem like the writing is setting up her accepting his death. Just as Gideon's story all started when he cost his troops their lives in his hubris Lilliana's started with her being unable to accept the death of her brother. Gideon was able to save his friend (Lilliana) and create the opening to defeat Bolas. He was able to give HIS life this time and use his power to protect those he cared about. This is her major flaw, selfishness The dragon's parting statement and Lilliana choosing to deal with the cult suggest the "resurrection" is just her dealing with his death and not a real end pint for this story. She might even find the spell she is looking for but have to make the choice to use it selflessly or let others suffer for her selfishness. Would be the perfect mirror just as Gideon choose to sacrifice his life choosing to sacrifice his return accepting that would be the choice he would have made that it WAS the choice he made. That he did not take her debt he gave her the opportunity to repay a new more selfless debt. He transformed her debt from one of selfish vanity to one of selfless sacrifice. Serving a master can be done in two ways, one by control and the other by choice. Black is a lot about choosing your own path and not being controlled but the path she took only led to being controlled (the e Raven Man, the Demons, and Bolas) while Gideon took a path of service but he was more free then she could have imagined. He even chose the place and time and manner of his own death. Lilliana feared hers so much she let herself be controlled in order to avoid it. Gideon in his hubris thought it was his job to slay the dragon. That only played right into Bolas' plan. Bolas expected that. Gideon realized that it was not his role to slay the dragon... it was his role to die so that the dragon could be slain. At first she thinks that in order to repay him she must bring him back (in order to ease her own guilt) but she needs to realize that he gave his life so that she could live that he saw that she made the choice to turn on Bolas knowing she would die that she was capable of that selfless sacrifice so he offered himself up instead in place of her so that through her surviving her selflessness could turn the tide. It was not just Gideon who chose to die that day he just chose to die instead. Hers was one final act of defiance and he turned it into the single moment that saved everyone. If she had not turned on Bolas he could not have sacrificed himself. She just like Kytheon should have died and so they did she faked her death and he became Gideon. Gideon was not a person.. not really Gideon was what was left after Kytheon died that day. She was his mirror in one way before the selfish and the selfless. Now she can be a mirror in another. It is no mistake they placed her in witherbloom instead of silverquill. While yes she is a necromancer that is not really what witherbloom is about. Silverquill is about cunning and getting people to do what you want. Its about power over others. That is much more in line with the old Lilliana. That she was witherbloom evokes life after death but not undeath not resurrection but death giving way to NEW life. A fallen tree rotting and fertilizing the ground for new plants to grow. That she might be Black/Green also mirrors Garruk who became that way because of her. He was just cured of that curse..... BY THE TWINS..... Or this is all me seeing the awesome story that could be while they just want to print a OP Gideon, Ressurected planeswalker card. Still would be awesome to have Lilliana on the side of the gatewatch vs the new phyrexians who represent the evil side of the color pie. That or they will have to introduce a new pure black walker to replace Lilliana.

People are angry with Liliana trying to bring back Gideon, but with her character progression i would be surprised if she didn't even try. it doesn't mean she has to succeed. characters need to be somewhat predictable if you know their emotional states for a good story

Gids died as he lived, as a hero. He isn’t like Elspeth, who was betrayed by her benefactor and had a score to settle. Gideon is different, he willingly sacrificed his life for a greater cause. It is nice that Liliana is trying to solve things that doesn’t involve killing though.

I think Liliana is going to have learn to channel some white mana to try and resurrect Gideon properly but her affinity for black magic is going to mess it up. Essentially orzhov Liliana and Gideon, but with Liliana leaning in on white and Gideon favoring black... Also Liliana has to be considerably weaker then she used to be so it would make sense for her to try and pick up some new tricks... That has to be incredibly frustrating for her too, considering not too long ago she was almost on par with an Eldrazi Titan, so if she does fail to bring Gids back it would stand to reason her next step is to reattain more power.... Again

I always read it that when a planeswalker hit 0 loyalty they decided that they'd given you enough to be deserving of their time and planeswalk away from your battlefield as opposed to actually dying on the field for you.

I actually hope Liliana's development is reflected, at least for the future, in her dabbling in another color other than black Kind of like Nissa I guess? Where she is mono green most of the times, but we've had her in Simic and Golgari as well in different points of her life.

I absolutely love the story. I don’t really care if Gideon comes back or not. If Gideon comes back, yay I love Gideon. I understand peoples arguments of making his sacrifice useless and stuff, but I just wouldn’t mind seeing him back. If not, then that’s some great character development for Liliana. One way or another this is interesting and I am for it.

My biggest problem is this is clearly going to be one of those Resurrection plots where she can't actually bring him back from the dead and it's about how she needs to let go and move on which been done to death a million times. In fact it's a character Arc that Liliana herself has gone through before with her brother. As someone who genuinely was really upset that they killed Gideon off during war of the spark I'm not exactly pleased with being given false hope for his resurrection simply for the purpose of making Liliana go through a character Arc that she is already gone through because the writers are out of ideas. If it turns out that she actually resurrects him somehow I'll eat my words but at this point I have no real help of that happening.

On the contrary resurrection is already a thing in both cards and lore and this a fantasy series. What matters is the execution, all they have to do is not do worse than Elspeth, which is already a low bar.

Remember how buffy was resurrected in her show? She got depression because she was in heaven, before resurrected. Als the spell summoned the first EVIL as a sideeffected and it's almost destroyed the world. - This is how the series buffy handeled this... I really hope, that gideon stays death, but if not... it must have terrible consequences.

She went to see the wrong dragon. While black-green is often associated with raising the dead, that doesn't seem to be the focus of the college of Witherbloom. I'd argue that she could have had just as much luck seeking out Shadrix Silverquill as white can also raise the dead, especially when you consider Gideon Blackblade being a 3 mana planeswalker that in game can be brought back with Sun Titan. Or failing that, the Lorehold college is more interested in raising up the past than any other college... though they might not be able to help as they're more focused on artifice than raising the dead.

Poor Liliana. She wants to bring Gideon back but she has a hard time ahead of her with how people view necromancy in the more civilized planes and with Ravnica closed to her. She'll need to use some people if she wants to her desires coincidently methinks.

She has to do it without resorting to her go-to black magic, which is a good thing that she's on Strixhaven. I think she's going to have to pivot to being able to use white magic to be able to raise him to true life, and to that end, I think she went to see the wrong dragon.

Reason the dragon is telling her no it's a bad idea is because gideon died at peace, he was content with his sacrifice. In bringing him back there's a very strong chance he may come back corrupted because he was never supposed to come back. I wouldn't be surprised if she ends up siding with the Oriq, my guess is they aren't going to destroy her means of bringing gideon back but in fact use it as a bargaining attempt because chances are they possess the magic to in fact bring him back. Where it's going to backfire is in using this magic he's likely to come back evil. Who knows maybe as a black mana planeswalker . (Just might be pretty badass if you really think about it)🤔 but what would make this more epic and poetic is if after bringing him back he kills her do to his head not being all there and turned bad. Would be cool if his new name became Gideon, Blackblade Reforged. I just want to call it now not sure when but Black color on gideon if he is to be resurrected.

This is a set up for liliana’s story in new phyrexia. They are going to find a way to raise an old god using the elixir from the sap of the world tree, and a ritual they need to find from strixhaven biblioplex. And she is going to try to interrupt it to res gidian.

Her brother was kind of an accident. Also, it might be different if you try and fail the first time. I think you only get one chance, and if you zombify them, it closes the door to true resurrection

It seemed to me that what she was trying to learn about was a way of restoring his soul and body via aether reconstruction which might make it less likely to go wrong after the spell casting is completed.

It seems like the method of resurrection she's trying to pull off would be closer to how a god could definitively and without repercussions or drawbacks revive someone straight from the aether. The only difference is she doesn't have the juice behind her like a god does so she has to take a riskier approach to cast magic of that type

Hm. If I was going by the good old lore on cards, it would be possible. Sure. There are cards that ressurect as zombie, but also cards, that just resurect. I don't think Gideon was killed tough. He was rather burnt from existence (or in game language exiled).

I'm quite liking the story, however, I don't know, I'm afraid Strixhaven itself is gonna be a waste for the set's story, a place that could have been any other plane with powerful mages. It feels like the university's potential for story is gonna be wasted I guess is what I mean. What could have worked better IMO, since it is a brand new plane, is have the central character be from Arcavios, so we can have a much deeper taste at what it has to offer. Not neccesarily a planeswalker, though a blooming planeswalker would work amazingly as well (like Eldraine, where the character planeswalks for the first time in the end), but more a character that has no ties to the previous MTG story. Let's call him...Henry. Maybe Henry is a Witherbloom student who, in his first class, really hits it off with these new sibling students from Prismari, Will and Rowan, and since Henry is a Witherbloom student, his main and favourite teacher is Proffesor Onyx. Maybe Henry is very similar to Liliana in the sense that he lost someone too, and like Liliana, he is trying to bring them back, that's the reason he went to Strixhaven and joined Witherbloom in the first place (maybe that someone was killed by the antagonists of the set, these purple magic users, so we can have some "you killed my love one!" confrontation in the climax). So, instead of Liliana alone, it's Henry accompanied by Liliana who go to see the dragon, Proffesor Onyx telling him that she is going with him so he can be safe, but they later bond more and Liliana opens up about her BS, her guilt, and that she wanted to go with him so she could ressurect someone too. You could do something very similar with Will and Rowan's story, have them more as secondary characters for Henry. As for how exactly, I don't know, we haven't seen much from them, maybe Henry can try and help with their failed spell or something. This could also be a fantastic development tool for the other characters, Kasmina, Will, Rowan and Liliana, seeing them interact with someone outside of their planeswalking lives and how they present themselves to him. And in the end, if you REALLY want to mantain planeswalkers as central characters, when he kills the evil purple magic mages that killed his loved one, his spark ignites and he planeswalks to...I don't know, Innistrad is the next set? Maybe there? I'm just saying this sort of story could work best in terms of making the plane feel unique and use it's story for all that is worth.

No, Elspeth was killed by Heliod after going to report back to him regarding her defeat of Xenagos. Heliod was threatened by the fact that she was able to kill a god and so killed her before she could get the chance to kill him. But because of how Theros works, she was trapped in the underworld of Theros until the most recent set when the seals that bind the dead were weakened allowing her to escape and return to life. Beyond that, though, other planeswalkers can and have died. Dack Fayden, Dovin Baan, and Domri Rade all died in War of the Spark, and Venser died to save Koth on Mirrodin a

@@leoregulus5842 according to the story I've read, yes Vraska spared him, but afterwards, as he was trying to settle into live somewhere, I stopped back home on Kaladesh before returning to Ravnica where he was assassinated by one of Lazav's agents. Lazav now has Dovin's left hand both as proof of the death and as a means with which to blackmail Vraska later. Vraska turned in his right while trying to prove his death.

I don't think Gideon is coming back. I think this exchange is the beginning of Liliana realizing she can't help him, though she will continue to hope. This story is a perfect "ending" or "evolution" to Liliana, because her initial problems were caused by her not being able to accept that someone is dying/dead ( her brother ). Coming to accept Gideon's death will mean she has become a stronger person & I believe that while she may have been seeking to bring Gideon back, she ultimately will not & will remain thankful for what he did for her. I can see in the distant future maybe she finds a way to revive him or meet with him. I could ALSO see an incredibly well-crafted story where Liliana finally dies as well, saving someone else much like Gideon did & completing the cycle of her story-arc. I'm not sure if they'd be willing to take such a bold move to kill off Liliana to complete a story-arc in an incredible powerful way.

I don' think she'll even attempt to raise Gideon if there's even a chance he'd just come back as a zombie... so that special promo card is probably the closest you'll see to a black-white zombie Gideon... also I'm pretty sure zombies can't be planeswalkers? That's why Glissa couldn't planeswalk after the Phyrexians raised her back as a zombie...

I never liked Liliana. She's selfish and evil, and this is shown here. Gideon opened up about his past and how his hubris lead to the death of his Irregulars, and he was excited to see them again. She's not trying to bring him back because it's the right thing to do, she's doing it because she feels bad.

I mean in war of the spark they literally won't kill Bolas because he will eventually come back granted war of the spark was a trash novel. Imprissining him isn't much better but I wish they would make lore decisions that matter. Now with that said when Bolas came back in time spiral it was a huge moment. She did. I think that she's being more cautious this time, not just trying to use her skills to pull him back since it's more likely she'll raise him as a lich rather than to true life. She's on the right track seeking the aid of someone with another color... but I think she went to the wrong dragon. Black-green is well known for being able to raise the dead, but that's not the case on Strixhaven. She might have had better luck going with the Silverquill. Granted they aren't terribly interested in that on Strixhaven either, but white also has the ability to raise the dead, except in their case, they don't reanimate the corpse like necromancy, they are able to raise it to true life.

1- is liliana limited in the head or are the writters writing for chieldren? She is thousands years old an can only care about one thing at a time? they are toying with a change of heart and ways, but if she is trully heartbroken with Gideon´s sacrifice, arent there many more things she could be sorry about? 2- Ressurecting Gideon is such a bad idea. Let´s hope it doesnt happen at all. 3- they didnt resolve the old garruk vs liliana conflict and they are creating a new one with lily´s messing with the twins, or at least Rowan? not nice. 4 - who is the headmaster of strixhaven? 5-arent we going to innistrad next? does that not point to liliana failing here and going back to the old ways? or will she get a way to get what she wants but travel to innistrad to perform the spell where her powers are stronger?

What do I think of the story so far? Don't bring Gideon back. Abandon the Gatewatch. For years they dominated the already mediocre MTG story, and I could cheerfully never see them again. Bring in more new characters. The MTG universe often feels as stale as The Star Wars universe.
