In the later summer / early fall of 1984, I thought I was a cool teenage metalhead because I listened to bands like Motley Crue, Twisted Sister & Ratt (along with Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Dio, etc). I especially remember listening to my cassette copy Motley Crue's "Shout At The Devil" & liking it. Then one day at school, I noticed that a friend of mine had drawn Metallica's logo on his notebook. He told me I should check them out. So I went to a record store that carried imports - the only way you could buy a Metallica album at the time - & picked up "Ride The Lightning." Now imagine "Fight Fire With Fire" being the very first Metallica song you ever heard in your life. That was my experience. I was completely blown away. I thought to myself, "Whoa, listen to these guys! Motley Crue sucks!" I then proceeded to give my sister my copy of "Shout At The Devil." One of her friends liked Motley Crue, & said to her, "Here, give this to your friend. I don't want it anymore. I'm on to bigger & better things!" I didn't even try to sell it. Metallica started me down the path of listening to much heavier & darker metal. By the spring of 1985, I was listening to bands like Slayer & Venom. Motley Crue, Matt & Twisted Sister became a distant memory.

kill em all remains my personal GOAT metallica album, in large part because i got hardcore hooked on "am i evil" off the electra version of kill em all in the late 80s. the music video One hit MTV in the fall 1988, then a friend played Am i Evil in class in high school, & that was it... i was a metalhead. Grew a mullet, went to the justice tour in march 89 for my first concert. so kill em all got me hooked on metal.

My fave of the Metallica catalog is 'Ride the Lightning'... but "Kill 'em all" made me a fan as a teen; I was blasting that record at top volume and went to get all the Metallica albums I could after that. "Jump in the fire" was Dave Mustaine's work... Hetfield's lyrics... "Kill 'em all" by Metallica was definitely THE top debut album from all the thrash metal debuts that came in those years - Anthrax's "Fistful of metal'... Slayer's 'Show no mercy'... Exodus' "Bonded by blood"... Megadeth's "Killing is my business..." ... Voivod's 'War and pain'... Kreator's 'Endless pain'... S.O.D.'s "Speak English or die"... Testament's "The Legacy"... Death Angel's "The ultra violence"... Sodom's "Obsessed by cruelty"... Destruction's "Infernal overkill"... Overkill's 'Feel the fire'... Nuclear Assault's 'Game over'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥

But I told them Its just like watching The Exorcist or something , I dont "worship the devil" lol , its just imagery . This solo and Comfortably Numb are my two favorite "lyrical" solos. Yes, Dave Mustaine wrote the first phrase of each solo on this album, but it was Kirk's "storytelling" that brought the second half of the solo to life. You can just imagine a cartoon of a demon chasing the protagonist trying to escape lava floes and dodging Harpies etc. Expression beats raw speed 10 times out of ten. Even Mustaine says that, when speaking about Gilmour.

Hahahaha, I haven't heard this one in a while. Back in my early editing/mixing days, I often played a lot with Megadeth and Metallica songs, doing different shit, and I recall an edit where after the final double-tap of the drums before the chorus, I slipped in the drum solo intro from Motorbreath, and when that ended, the double-tap of the JITF drums resumed, and into the chorus, lol. Another edit I did was on Whiplash, but I'll share that when Lily reaches that track. 😀

If memory serves me right, this is the first song that James Hetfield and Dave Mustaine wrote together for Metallica. The original versions lyrics was written by Dave Mustaine and like The Mechanix, Jump in the Fire was originally about having sex. When Dave was kicked out of the band, James re-wrote the lyrics to be about the devil trying to get people to sin and literally jump in the fire.
