This song is about James growing up with Christian science parents who didn't believe in medicine, among other things. James mother died when he was young to a very curable cancer, and his father then checked out, etc. so you can hear his anger in this song!

I always understood the title as one being for a suicide note, and thus the "Dear Mother, Dear Father" part. Personally, ever since I heard it I understood how even in their best intentions parents can shelter children to the point they are maladjusted, angry, frustrated, depressed and not ready to mix with the rest of the world. James’ parents were very religious and e.g did not believe in medical treatment but believed that their faith in God would heal illness. James’ mother got cancer and he lost her in his teenager-years. They also shielded him from sports a.o so he was not allowed to have a “normal” life like his friends. “Dyers Eve” is about blaiming them for his lost childhood

This whole album is nothing but pure aggression. They were still mourning the loss of Cliff and still couldn't accept Jason as the bassist, which is why all you hear is heavy distortion of guitar over the bass. This song is about James life growing up with a mother that was a Christian that didn't believe in medical science. It's his conflict which gives this song added aggression 🤘😎🤘

unfukingbeatable! top tier thrash greatest all time. This song is the peak of showing off their skills. He (James) didn't know his father. His stepfather was a very religious man and wouldn't allow modern medicine to intervene while his mother was dying. She died and James grew up to hate religion and what it's strict practice took from him. The song "Fade To Black" was written from the dark place in his mind when his favorite guitar - a gift from his deceased mother gave him - was stolen. The Unforgiven was written through inspiration of how he felt towards the stepfather he blamed for allowing his mother to die.

Random Metallica trivia I ripped from Wiki... "Freeze 'Em All was a one-off concert by American heavy metal band Metallica played in Antarctica on December 8, 2013. It took place in a dome near the heliport of the Carlini Base in Argentine Antarctica, and was attended by 120 people, ranging from members of the base's research team and winners of a sweepstake offered by the Coca-Cola Company. The concert featured ten songs played over the span of an hour. As to prevent noise pollution, the show was played without any traditional amplification and was instead transmitted to the audience through headphones. The concert made Metallica the first band to perform on all seven continents. The concert was later released as a live album." BTW, checked the set list....no "Trapped Under Ice"...

People who say Metallica stopped playing thrash after the first 3 or 4 albums annoy me. Yes, they definitely started going with more heavy groovey type songs as they progressed but there are thrashy bangers on every one of their albums, including Load and Reload. Personally, I slightly prefer their heavier stuff over their pure thrash stuff, especially if I'm listening to an entire album.

Yes. This is a direct response to Hetfield's parents, from James. [both were dead by the time this album was released]. His parents were "christian scientists" - one of the aspects of that cult is that: they do not seek out medical assistance ("physicians do not heal, god heals" and so forth🙄), so: when James' mother contracted some form of cancer, she did not seek or accept (thereby: never received) treatment or assistance (thereby: dying from said disease). There are parallels, to be drawn, here, between: James' experience with his mother and Maynard's (A Perfect Circle, Tool, Puscifer, etc.) with HIS. Although different in some practical aspects, essentially, they, essentially, derive from & demonstrate the same sorts of "faith" and conviction in (un-provable and demonstrably fallacious) beliefs/ideas/et al. ...SO, yes: while I am confident that Hetfield knew there were/would be plenty of others who would/did relate to the emotions expressed in and the subject matter of the song, "Dyer's Eve" is, also, clearly, an expression of personal pain, frustration, inability to comprehend and refusal to accept. Deeply visceral and powerful.

I don't think James never really got the credit for being such a great lyricist when he was only twenty-something. Writing about addiction, politics and war in a poetic manner that he did at such young age is just incredible (I remember the lyrics I wrote at that age and they're SO embarrassing). But these songs where he dives into his personal life still hit the most. Bleeding Me and Mama Said are another examples that just break your heart. The only reason I don't like him personally is his love for trophy hunting, but I can separate the person from his art. At some cases.
