George recorded this song when he and his one true love, Tammy Wynette had split up for good. He tried for days to make it through a session, but kept breaking down in drunken tears. Finally, his producer called Tammy and told her what was going on. She came down to the studio and when George saw her, he pulled himself together and recorded the song in one take, which is the take we here on the album. His close friend Alan Jackson sang this song at George's funeral....one of the most emotional performances ever.

My grandmother played this at my grandfather’s funeral. He loved her more than anything else in the world. I still fight back tears when I hear this song some 30 years later. The old possum is sorely missed.

In addition to having to deliver my dad's eulogy, my mother asked me to play this song on guitar and sing it at my dad's funeral, it was their favorite after 50 years together. He loved her until his last breath, when she passes, I will change the words and sing it at her funeral.

"Choices" is the George Jones timeless classic that hits my heart and makes me cry the most, because I have experienced addiction. I'm still living and dying with the choices I made. "Choices" is by far the greatest country song George Jones ever recorded. "He Stopped Loving Her today" is the second, "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes" is the third best from the Possum. I'm a Chicano born and raised in East L.A and love country music,

My dad was one of George Jones’ biggest fans. He used to frequent the bars quite often especially after he and my mom got divorced, and lots of people told me he loved to karaoke his songs especially this one. This was real country music.

He said I'll love you until i die... She said, "you'll forget in time" He kept loving her even though she left him. He died All dressed up to go away... Part of what people miss about the lyrics is the writer knows today is a great day for his friend. His friend's love for her made him struggle and he tried to deal with that love by forgetting it, without success. He's finally over for good. Meaning both it's final and it's a good thing. She came to see him one last time, likely meaning she had seen him over the years and possibly adding to his struggle. Like a struggle with addition, her presence setting him back in recovery each time.

Lilly i know lots about George Jones. Never met him but know people who knew him personally and s few from his hometown that worked for me in the oilfields in East Texas. There will never be another Possum or No-Show Jones. He lived a tumultuous life of music & drinking. But no matter his faults he was undoubtedly the best country singer ever. There will be No One to fill his shoes. Many others are great singers but Possum is the Greatest. Tammy and George will forever be my favorite country music artist ever. I love them and miss them both. I was 9 years old when i lost my real dad. I was raised by my stepdad who loved George Jones as well, My stepdad died several years ago and every time i hear George sing it brings tears to my eyes for my stepdad. I love music that ministers to my heart like Tammy & George Jones.

The man loved this woman but she didn’t feel the same way so she left but he continued loving her and waited for her to come back. He loved her til the day he died that’s why he stopped loving her today, he died. They put a wreath upon his door and carried him away. I don’t understand how 95% of you don’t get that?

This was on the radio so much when I was a kid and I always liked it, but I always wondered why it made especially the women in my family and extended family cry. Because I did not understand it. I didn't understand it until I was a young adult and then I have now been loving this song for so many years. Also be aware that this performance is from many years after it was his first really big hit when he was really young. You should sometime either listen to the audio track or I think there might be some footage of him really young singing it. Another one of his early hits which I know absolutely for sure there is incredible black and white footage of him singing, is White Lightning. It's so fun! Play George Jones had tons of hits and wonderful songs over many many years. He was considered the King of Country for a long time.

Hi how you doing today Lillian My name is DAVEN LEE POWE from Duluth Minnesota born and raised now I'm in waconia My daddy he was born and raised in Laurel Mississippi I was born in Duluth but I always had a thing for country music like George Jones Merle Haggard Johnny Cash Willie Nelson all the greats you know what I mean the ones that tell all the stories most stories are about their lives and how they lived and shared those songs with people around the world I watch your video last night for the first time and true story behind the song and why he's so sad when he sings that song it's because when him and Tammy wynette split apart he fell apart it broke his heart because he love her so much.... so his songwriter creator told George I still think you got it in you and I have a song for you it's about a woman you love so much that you can't stop loving her until the day you die even though you never be able to get her back.and when this song came to be it got to the point on how much he tries so hard to tell her he loves her and wants her back and he's he knew that he couldn't get her back that's when his songwriter creator said I got a song for you George I think you still got it in you George the songwriter says to him.... And I guess it took a long time to complete this song because it was just so sad until the day when it was finally finished Tammy wynette was there to listen to it and I don't know how that man held it in he went through that whole song to the end perfectly Even though it was killing him inside he completed the song....He stopped loving her today and that's the story behind that beautiful sad song reason why I'm saying this cuz I know and felt how George felt I went thru something similar relationship where I knew in the end that I couldn't have her cuz she was in love with someone else so I felt George's pain and I could relate to him and it became my favorite song and I listen to it all the time and it never gets old Thank you for sharing your story last night Lillian I push the like button and subscribe to your channel Thank you for hearing my story watch that show it's called GEORGE AND TAMMY c one season 6 episodes and you'll see it in the last season 6 on how that song was created God bless you Lillian from Daven Lee Powe and have a good day and then take care 🥲😁😎

I heard (on TV or the radio, I can't remember which.) George talk about the song, which I believe became his greatest hit. He didn't write it. He didn't have anything to do with writing it. It was pitched to him, and his reaction was "no one is going to want to hear that sad thing". He didn't want anything to do with it. Eventually he was talked into recording it, and the rest is history. You tell a good story, but I believe George. It is sad that Lilly couldn't be bothered enough to listen well enough to even comprehend the story line.
