Fun fact; Tori Amos did a version of this song, of course with her own musical twist. The members of Slayer actually loved it and sent her a box full of merch after they heard it. Also, this track was used in an episode of South Park. Eric Cartman invaded a hippy festival playing this song. He said, "hippies hate death metal".

Raining Blood, the album is I think a genre defining piece. My introduction to Slayer was the Raining Blood / Black Magic live video. I watched that at the ago of 15 or 16 and I said "This is simply brutal, it hits you in the face and makes you go through walls". After that I got deeper into Slayer and I still love it. I attented 5-6 concerts and I can still remember Tom smiling while the first tempo speed up and us moshing like hell and everybody scraming.... It will always be one of my favourite moments.

When I saw Slayer live in UT at the Bonneville Salt Flats raceway, the sky literally opened up during this song and poured for like 5 minutes, at the correct timing of the song ! Raining Blood from a lacerated sky ! literally ! It was HOT, We all lost it and went wild ! An experience not many will ever have. Saw them along with Megadeth, Anthrax, Alice in Chains. (July 3 1991. Clash of the Titans tour) I'd love to know if anyone else remembers that and was there too.! ! I wouldn't believe me if I hadn't been there.

Slayer never disappoint, especially their 1980's albums those are pure brutality back in the day. Love the Reign In Blood (1986) album it's a must for any Metalhead. Later those albums inspired the birth of Death Metal in the 80's, other extreme Metal genre with bands like Possessed, Poison (the German band), Death, Necrophagia, Autopsy, Morbid Angel, Slaughter (the Canadian band), Morbid Angel, Obituary, Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Bolt Thrower, Suffocation, Macabre, Carnage, Entombed, Dismember, Grave, Unleashed, etc.

They disappointed me, being into metal growing up i didn't understand the hype over Slayer. All their lyrics seemed like they were penned by either a 9 year old or an angsty teen. The guy can't sing. All other metal bands during Slayers era were bigger than Slayer (says a lot), a lot of their songs have the same boring repetition drum pattern. I think because they played fast and has demonic t shirts they got more cult status rather than it being down to actually writing great songs. If I'm wrong please point out why every metal band was bigger than them even though Slayer were hyped as being the biggest .. make it make sense.

FWIW, what Tom Araya had in mind when he wrote these lyrics was a cavern with stalactites all over the ceiling; and, impaled on those stalactites were dozens of corpses. The blood dripped from the stalactites and, as they landed, they formed the structure of S'tan's new body. Dead Skin Mask is one of the most uplifting and beautiful songs in Slayer's oeuvre, so if that's what you mean by lyrical, that's what I recommend.

6:16 and here my hopes for building up to bands such as Cryptopsy :) One band and genre at a time. Bless you Lilly! A great first, as always. Personally, I think that all other songs on Reign in Blood are in fact better than this closer. But there is no doubt that it's one of the two most popular Slayer songs. Slayer wrote about a lot of serious matters. "Silent Scream"'s lyrics are very grave, for any era. "Mandatory Suicide", "Expendable Youth", and also "Jihad" and "Unit 731".

Raining Blood is the climax of the Reign in Blood album, a seminal work the redefined Death Metal, with the assistance of producer Rick Rubin. To fully appreciate the song’s magnificence, you need to listen to it in the context of the full album (it’s only 30 minutes long). Slayer has no ballads, but they followed up Reign in Blood with an uncharacteristically slow album, South of Heaven. For something lyrical, try the title track or the closer, Behind the Crooked Cross.

I saw Tom Araya being interviewed on a BBC documentary and asked about this. He broke into the shyest, most endearing big smile, like you would never have expected, and he said "Raining Blood, is basically, a horror story". He also wasn't a metal fan, when they recruited him into Slayer. He was basically some kind classic rock hippy. He claims never to have heard metal until he was introduced to it by the other guys. I think he picked up the general gist of Metal, pretty well. Most lyrical song: maybe War Ensemble. They were just writing it about what the horrors of war are, in an unironic way, with a few metaphors thrown in about it being treated by, maybe, the higher-up generals, etc, as a sport, but one where the score is measured in human life. Then, just like presidential candidates adopt songs like Born In The USA for their election campaigns, army officers, reputedly, adopted War Ensemble and blasted it out of massive speaker at Iraqui soldiers during the gulf war to frighten them into a state of semi-submission, even before any shots had been fired. If you listen to it with that in mind, you can imagine how somebody from a different culture, who isn't used to hearing something like that, might actually quiver in fear at the thought of what is about to ensue.

When they played this that "Marching" part, as you called it, it was me and about 7 or 8 other guys, none of us knew each other from Adam, stood in a line and just put our arms around each other and in unison headbanged to that.
