I'm sorry, Claudio, I can't really answer this. I've checked on Google and there are several references but I didn't come up with a definitive answer. I believe the words are based on an old gospel song from the 19th century, and that much later the jazz musicians took it from there. Let me know if you ever find out the reality!

@@colinbryan7811 You can hear Fry's song at kzbin.info/www/bejne/rp_GdoF3i9Ktnbs. It seems to be a different song from the one being played by The Thames Valley Jazz Quartet. I think there were two songs with the same name.
