And even though what Light said doesn't technically apply to her - she won't age, being a zombie and all - she still recognized that she can't stay the same forever, and then she took that challenge head on (essentially facing the fear that her past self couldn't). I saw it as more of a flex of her ability than anything. The boy spent his entire acting career influencing adults to succeed wherever possible using any underhanded tricks he could. Lily didn't just change her act to make up for picking the same song. She was flexing her ability to make every kid who watched the show like her act. There are a lot of subtle hints that imply Lily obtained a 100% child approval for every kid watching that show. She won by losing and achieved her goals despite losing. Honestly they might have even let the boy win as a consolation prize because no one could compete vs an act like that.

Lily really proved herself in this episode. Endlessly kind to a boy who was so cynical it hurt, even as he basically insulted her. Able to come up with a brand new musical performance in mere minutes. Designing a brand new outfit, with trans flag colours I might add, in that same time frame. This is kind of cruel but accurate. There is a certain level of snobism that goes for musical talent shows where they value slower, more 'classical-y' type songs higher purely on how they are often more difficult to perform. This is not to say this is true for all cases, both forms of song and performance are difficult in their own ways, but what Lily did is more akin to jazz music where you don't necessarily know a full song, just follow the beat/sound and play/sing pseudo-improvised things to it. This is what people who fawn over Lily saying she rewrote the whole song in 5 minutes get wrong. She didn't. She knew the song by heart and altered the beat's tempo and the major they'd play it in, something you can do with just a few scratches with a pencil and just a little difficulty if you know the song well and have experience in music/stage like she does. If you listen closely, you can hear the music isn't following her, she's following the music. This is why. She knew the song Inochi by heart and then just made up the skibidi-boop-pabub sounds to the beat and sound of the band. That's why she repeats a lot of the sounds, since they just 'feel' natural in her mind. However, performances like this tend to be viewed as lesser, purely because they seem to require less preparation to pull off. Light had to train himself to match the very specific pitch and tempo of Inochi as a song, whereas Lily just made some small alterations to some paper and then followed the altered music of a song she knew very well from her background. In a sense, Light fought harder but Lily fought smarter. And Light noticed this. The reason he tells Lily she won is because he recognizes how well she must know this song to be able to reinvent it in such a jazzy, free-flow way, but to the judges, it was the more jazzed up and half-improved version of the song they just heard, so while in their eyes, Lily was entertaining, they saw Light as having worked harder and performed better, giving him the award. In short, to the judges' eyes, Light altered himself and trained hard to be able to perform a famous song. Lily improvved a bunch of nonsense words and sang part of the song to a far faster beat, meaning she didn't need to hold notes as lengthy as Light did. To us (and Light), it's clear that one was true talent in improv while the other was a very good imitation of true talent in creativity, but to the judges, it was a famous, difficult song versus a bumpin' jazz to an easy beat. Sorry for the long comment but I hope this explains some things. I love Lily too (though Saki is still best girl) but I can kind of see why Light won (y'know, beyond story reasons).

@@darklord884 Before they decided on the winner the judges were told that Lily changed her entire set piece while Light was singing so they did know that it was originally going to be sung like the original song but was changed because Lily found out last minute that Light chose the same song. In other words even from the judge's perspective Lily put in more work. Light was neither better or smarter. Which is why he saw it as his loss despite the judges giving him the win. He knows it and Lily knows it. Light was faking it but Lily was the real deal. When it comes to music people who don't know much about music tend to think that faster paced songs take less skill to sing than slower paced songs but this isn't always the case, such as this case. Even scatman is hard to do because it requires you to study the song inside and out for it to sound good. Tl:dr the judge's don't know much about music.

The way I see it Lily lost the battle but won the war in that yes she came second which is still an incredible (feat especially after that Mudskipper display!) but her dance and song resonated with the audience children learn to the dance and it becomes a sensation and it’s something she made up on the spot! Lily is incredibly talented and resourceful and much like the rest of the band shows serious growth from season 1

Let's see, she showed improvisation skills, sight singing skills (that's the skill to be able to take a piece of music and perform it without practicing it for days/ weeks/ months), an insane level of composition skill for the age she died at considering composition takes a good amount of time to learn to that level, and then she put it all together into a neat little package all on the same day. If Lily were real, she'd instantly have a spot in any group I ran if desired because her level of skill is just plain unheard of, this is prodigy level stuff to be able to do it all at once in such a short time and she definitely did better than her competitor competition wise. The ONLY thing I could fault her on in the competition is if she was required to stick to the music as written, which some classical music competitions do require and immediately disqualify a competitor who doesn't, but I'm pretty sure I would remember if that was a rule since that would be something way too big to leave out of the episode. Do not, I repeat, do NOT mess with an idol in the realm of any performing art, you WILL get schooled hard and fast. This goes for the real ones, too, they can be pretty good at what they do. The voice actress is extremely skilled and I absolutely respect that.
