Kirk, hope you see this question... We're redoing our fireplace here in San Diego in our Spanish style home. After building out the fireplace and hearth to sit on, then wrapping it with cement board, I had planned to put structo lite on there. But I just saw another today video from 7 months ago where you explain that structo lite is having issues? UGH! If the issues are resolved at some point, I would like to use it. My question is, putting the structo lite on it, including the fireplace hearth, then using the diamond veneer coat, if embers fly out of the fireplace and get on the hearth, will that be 1) fireproof, 2) can I clean soot off of it, 3) we just want a white fireplace, so can it be painted afterwards? Or will the structo lite be white enough? (Oops that's 3 questions... sorry). Thank you for your answer. I really love watching your videos. Cool family!

I have found the Structo-Lite okay, lately. Structo lite is bright white but so are the lime plasters, they are pouras thus stains rarely come out, so if you don't want staining paint it when you're done.👨🏻‍🏫

@@StuccoPlastering thanks Kirk! Well, I finally went to the source (USG) and asked what was going on, and why I couldn't get it here in San Diego, and why it was taken out of box stores like Home Depot, Lowes, etc. The rep said that it's now considered "old school" and people are using other methods that aren't nearly as good as this. So the inventory was left on the shelves... which brings me to why some of the bags weren't as good (or were defective). They said none were defective. BUT, Structo-Lite and Diamond Veneer finishing have a 6 months shelf life, and they actually put the "made" date on there so that people don't purchase an older bag that was perhaps exposed to moisture, etc. or just not used in time. They gave me the name of their favorite wholesale distributor down here in SoCal and I drove 80 miles yesterday to get it. Those people said if you want the smooth, plaster style fireplace, THIS is the best stuff! So YAY! Thank you for all you do, Kirk. AND thank you for being the voice of reason, the best instructor. We thank you SO MUCH!

@@StuccoPlastering I took a photo of the Structo bag and the Diamond bag. I will email it to you. The diamond bags you can see the born on dates very easily. For structo-lite, you can barely see them and on some of my bags, it has rubbed down to almost nothing. But you'll see it on there. And again, the USG Rep down here in San Diego said to always look for the "made dates" or "born on" dates to get the best use out of the products. So now it's all making sense. YAY!

Hi Kirk. Your videos are great. My situation is I have a side entrance into my house that had some wavy bead board. I tore down the bead board. It was applied over the remnants of the thin set for the tiled entry way. I mixed up some structo lite and spread that over the thin set. My mixer broke halfway through so I had to mix up what I can. The rest of the entry way was sand finis plaster that I coated with pink usg plaster bonder. Now. I know I need to sand down the structo lite to be smoother and less wavy. I also know I need to re apply the plaster bonder to the rest of the sand finish walls. I don’t believe I need to put the plaster bonder on the structolite. Do I need to wet the wall before I apply the diamond? My last question is can I use this diamond finish veneer plaster over the plaster bonder and the structolite? I found it at menards but when I called usg to double check they recommended red top gauging plaster. Can I just use this diamond veneer finish plaster? Pleas help and thank you.
@StuccoPlastering

My friend, you cant sand structo-lite, but it's not necessary anyway. Wet your structo-lite scratch or base coat and finish off with Diamond or imperial, they are made by the same company, they say you should go a sixteenth to an eighth inch only, what happens if you go an inch? Nothing. I have ap[ppied diamond an inch many times. Soooo, just skim it as thick as you need with the finish coat, wet the structo-lite before, or it will dry on contact and not adhere well. No bonding agent is needed unless you want to slow the set time of the finish coat, Cheers, kirk Giordano

I have some walls and ceilings in my 1926 home which are a mixture of original finish plaster interspersed with some large structolite repair patches, and areas of paint which I couldn't get scraped off (which is probably leaded, so I can't safely sand it off to get back to the finish plaster). My question is: can I roll/brush a bonding agent across such a mixed surface, and apply 2 coats of Diamond Veneer to make it nice and uniform again, or will the Diamond not adhere properly in this scenario, failing over time?

Hi Kirk, I think I have met my match. Structolite went on well, then additional plasterweld, and first coat of Diamond. it looked OK-ish, so I decided to let it dry and sand out some of the imperfections. Seemed like a good idea. I went to do a final finish coat and misted the fireplace with water and started applying the diamond. you could hear the moisture getting sucked out of the new coat and it was chunky before i could even trowel it out. i quickly scraped it off and am back to smooth sanded finish. did I just not get the sanded material damp enough or is there another trick. since i put colorant into the diamond I hate to use plasterweld since it is green and you might see it in any thin places. hmm leaning toward having you guys come down to san jose to do the final. I am getting pressure to just get it done from the boss. any recommendations?

Hi Robert, FYI, Diamond would have adhered to structo-lit without the plaster weld. When I apply a diamond veneer plaster with or without color, I first make sure a patch or a whole wall is properly misted or wet or this sucking up will happen., or use can as you did seal it with a boding agent which will allow more time to work with the plaster. You can apply two coats back to back as I did in this video, FYI diamond can't be sanded, best wishes and have fantastic day, kirk giordano

These videos are absolutely fantastic and have given me the confidence to successfully tackle several restoration projects on our older house. I have a quick question that I haven't been able to figure out. Can you repair a large hole in a plaster + veneer wall (let's say basket ball size) using plaster + veneer as your patching material? (i.e. not using joint compound). I have tried filling in large holes with Structo-Lite but the problem is that it this base coat ends up being flush with the rest of the wall since I have to reference the wall to fill in the base coat. So then the veneer on the patched portion is up too high off the wall (above the original wall and paint). I know that with joint compound you build the wall slightly up above the original wall surface to cover the patch and paper and then taper it back slightly to the level of the original wall so that it visually matches. Is the technique when using veneer the same when using veneer the same as it would be when using joint compound in this regard?

Evening Flying Gratchet, If it just a hole that size, I'd just use the veneer finish. Yes, you are supposed to apply and eight-inch think, what happens when you go an inch think? Hi Kirk, I saw a comment on here similar to my situation, but still different enough to where I wanted to ask the question. I have a fireplace that is wrapped in Durock cement board. We thought we would tile it, but we have an old craftsman and really want to go for a plaster finish. Like the commenter below, I also live in a rural area that has nothing in terms of stucco/plaster supply. I was fortunate to get my hands on some Diamond Veneer Finish, but I can't find a basecoat anywhere... no structolite, imperial basecoat, nothing. What is a good alternative for a basecoat on my Durock cement board so I can apply my Diamond Veneer Finish over it? Would regular Portland cement work? Thanks so much for any guidance you have!
@hybridamerica
@hybridamerica 4 жыл бұрын
You can apply PlasterWeld on it, or if the structure is sound (solid) a PVA primer. The Diamond finish will stick well to them both... if you use PlasterWeld, it can render blue or pink and your finish coat will have to be thicker to cover it fully, which is why we use PVA drywall primer (white). The Diamond finish can be worked down to a "mirror finish" and will need to be sealed afterwards. You can buff in a beeswax (No outgassing) or use a product like OKON which seals on a micro-level... excellent for diamond. If you have inclusions that need to be filled before you plaster, 20 minute mud works great - but will need to be primed afterwards, as un-primed surfaces can draw too much moisture out of your diamond product. Also use cold water in your mix and if you live in a more arid climate, it will set up faster. DO not use a steel trowel, rather a stainless one or even a quality plastic one like a Japanese trowel works fine. Steel trowels can leave metal traces that can oxidize and affect the purity and color of your finish.

Howdy AH Dude, Mechanical bonding methods and why. Lime finishes and or all others adhere to lime basecoat by suction are technically called a mechanical bond. 😉 This is the absolute strongest bond known to man. This is achieved by misting or wetting the base-coat then spreading the new wet finish over the existing. Thus the new wet plaster adheres to the porous base-coat forever by suction. They sort of weld themselves together and forever.🤔 So, if you already have a plaster base coat, rolling or painting on another coat of bonding agent is not necessary.

Howdy Steve Dude, For your structo-lite apply a bonding agent such as Plaster weld by Larson's, then no need for misting as there is no suction in a brick or block chimney, especially with a bonding agent on it as it also kills the suction. Then as you say your going to apply the finish the next day, , this is now a thirsty wall, sooo, mist it if necessary, depending on the heat, a lot, or hardly any. Tip brother, structo-lite can take up to five hours to set, you can add accelerators for it to set in 5 minutes if enough is added. Your finish coat, of course, you can add color, if you don't like the color it comes out, paint it or apply another coat and try colors again. Applying colors is an art, I have explained how to in a separate video. FYI, I did both the base and finish coat on the same day. I figure if I can do smooth wall sheet rock I could try this (My wife was skeptical). I have my second coat of Structo Lite drying and it looks great just a few small holidays. Before I move to the Diamond veneer, I was curious if you could share some tips on the finish of the veneer. I want to go smooth, and i see you have a spray bottle on the mantle of this video. Do you let the diamond set up a bit and then spray to help smooth, or is there another technique. Thanks Rob

Hello Robert Condit, thank you, You don't need a perfect base coat for a veneer finish but it helps. I apply two coats usually when I am laying on any veneer finish, (diamond,Imperial or red top), the first is to set strongly to the basecoat the second is to give me the smooth finish I wish, I generally lay it on a bit fat or heavy then come back and trowel smooth, I or you can use a spray bottle to bring it back to life it it starts to set, or you can use a felt brush or any other tool you wish to add a bit of water which makes it more manageable. When you lose all the fat and it's dry, and if you still see a holiday, mix a handful and simply go over these holidays, tapping muds works well also for holidays after a veneer finish. The tapping mud is a so called trade secrete, opps, not anymore. Cheers and have a Happy New Years, Kirk Giordano’s DIY plastering tips

Kirk & Jason Giordanos DIY plastering and stucco instructional videos and forum Hi Kirk, I have a follow up question. I finished the base on the fireplace with Structolite and we did a bump out on the fireplace using steel studs and Hardibacker. Should I use plaster weld on the hardibacker before I put the Veneer on it? I assume the veneer will adhere to the hardi backer on its own.

I have original plaster on a 1870's house. However, because everything was wallpapered, there is only the basecoat on the wall. some imperfections and such. Do I need to go over all of this with a new basecoat, or can I use some plasterweld and then the finish coat? Also does it matter what kind of finish coat? Can I use MoP, Diamond, or Kal-Kote? Thanks!
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick, no doubt it's a base coat with a finish on it, but you should remove the wallpaper otherwise if the paper fails so will the finish coat. You can use whatever interior lime or gypsum product you want. I advise a Diamond finish coat.😉

I put a sanded primer on sheetrock, originally planning to do an American Clay plaster, but have decided to use the structo lite and Diamond veneer. Kirk -- You mention red devil lime and taping mud as possibilities to fix holidays, but if your (diamond) plaster is colored, how do you fix holidays to match the color and avoid painting? Maybe I misunderstood one of the comments. I can use more diamond to fill holidays without applying a full coat?

Howdy, good question, if any finish is colored, you must do it right the firt time or matching colors is difficult. FYI, you can use diamond, or taping mud to fill holidays as long as it's not colored. Best wishes, Kirk giordano

Hi kirk. My husband and are going to try this project on our brick facade, wood burning fireplace. We live in an area that doesnt have a wonderful supply at local hardware, Lowes, Homedepot etc. No Structolite, unfortunately. What would be a good generic product line found at a local store as a substitute for this method? We also have unpainted brick. Do we still need to score with a metal brush prior? Thanks for the help!

Evening R.V.F., yes, however when you apply and trowel down it won't show like exposed aggregate in concrete. So what's the purpose? To have a glass sheen finish? If you're trying to achieve the exposed aggregate as some home have with seashells and or crushed glass this won't work with this finish coat as thats not how it's applied on homes either. They make different finishes such as crushed marble that can be applied as a finish coat instead of plaster. There are many products to give a more than interesting finish, your only limited to your imagination. Best wishes, Kirk giordano

Greetings Gordan, when you want strength and have the time, and extra cash I'd recommend structo-lite or imperial base and or diamond finishes. If you just want it done and still last a lifetime use the drywall compounds such as USG's or Westpac's 20, 40, 60 .... minutes muds. FYI, structo like the compound has gypsum but also sand for strength. The imperial and or diamond brands have crushed limestone in added in the bags for strength.. @@nosotroalentamo939 - We're so busy -, though I would like to do videos and maybe we will - eventually. We burnish plaster, stucco, clay and concrete when it's called for - all leading to polished finishes. The idea is to work the cream up after a bit of time has passed, as the concrete or whatever is setting up. We use spray bottles of water a little to advance the cream. The cream is the weakest part of the product, so if you're not careful and burnish too soon, the cream will cure and flake off. When we do diamond plaster, the working time is extremely short so you start burnishing (only with plastic white or clear trowels or sometimes stainless - but never regular steel) within minutes. The more people, the better - someone mixing, someone cleaning buckets, trowels, etc and a couple of people applying. We used to practice on 4x4 panels. Like everything, familiarizing yourself with the material is invaluable. Sealing the finished product also helps stabilize the cured cream, as well as enhances the shine.
