Limitations of Lime in Construction

Lime is an age old binder which was used as a construction material worldwide before it was replaced by cement in the 1950s. At Aanandaa, we chose to build our #sustainablehouse with lime as the primary binder material along with rammed earth and stone.
In this video series, we are partnering with Malvika Mehta, Founder of MLIME BUILD LLP, on understanding lime as a binder, it's properties, ways to include it in your building, and its pros and cons vis a vis cement.
The closed loop of lime's lifecycle is why it is sustainable, recyclable, low energy and more relevant than ever before. Companies like MLIME, and people like Malvika are helping house builders adopt this material with standardised products, on site training and theoretical know how.

Thank you for your feedback. The earthquake resistance of the structure is more dependent on the structural engineering and techniques rather than the mortar. IN our understanding, the mortar will be as solid as cement.

I heard from a mason who used to work with lime and other sustainable materials, that using steel with lime is possible by keeping it exposed rather than filling it with mortar around. Like in Madras roofing, we can use steel truss instead of wooden truss, and its safe since its left open and does not react anything else other than air and moisture.

I am building a home with laterite stone and since watching this series line is playing on my mind. No support from architect and too late to go for someone else. With the help of contractor I want to go in for lime mortar instead of regular cement sand. . If any one can give me the confidence that use of lime mortar during rains won’t pose a problem . As an lternative method I would use conventional mortar but once the monsoon ends and the roof is done the lime plaster can be done. . I was even thinking of Vedic plaster.

Basalt rebar is something I would like to use instead of steel. Its lighter, and stronger and doesn’t rust.

Manisha ma'am, did you try speaking to Mrinmayee Mahija Architects from Bangalore? They run a trust called Grama Vidya. They are building multi floor building without pillars and beams(the idea is load bearing walls). Try speaking to them they may help you with a breakthrough.

Also you may speak to Siva Darshan Malik ji from Haryana/Punjab who has been a professor at IIT Kanpur, he may help to find a solution here. Also there is a Scientist who is working on Bamboo for a very long time. Try speaking to him. He was one who told us using bamboo we can build high-rise instead of steel

Lime is always hydrated before using it in construction. So that's ok
