I should have said it in the video, but use your competition stance for the holds. If you pull conventional, do these with that stance.

I love heavy holds, however, I know myself and some clients just struggle at the end of a session to go load up a bar super heavy in the rack and actually do them to the right intensity. My solution so far has been to a) do all top sets strapless, on straight set accessory days atleast the first set strapless and b) one those sets hold the bar at the top for the same time in seconds as the reps you did +1 e.g. 1x3, 2x6 - the set of 3 hold for 4s up top, straps on back offs. On low rep accessories like 3x2 pause deads I try to do it on all sets. I just find it allows me to get 3-5 heavy holds in across the week without having to load up an extra bar and progresses linearly with the weekly increase in load. But thats just me!

What a great video. I’ve been wondering what I could do! Hook grip never worked for me, and I’ve always loved mixed grip

Hmmm... Im gonna try this. I use Hook for very Heavy singles only. Straps for rep work above a certain weight. And I had a very strong grip to begin with. Holds could be a great benefit. Good video Brother.

The hook grip just works for me. It's very stable and never had any issue with it contrary to the over/under grip

Great tip. I'd love to see a video of how you incorporate straps. Im also a fan of them for rep work, but have recently switched back in the final stagea of my current block because I find I have a lot of trouble with setup. I setup top-down, and fins that I can't brace and keep my breath/core tight while setting up the straps. Plus, I find I get uneven length (sometimes the strapsmare tighter, sometimes the bar is highing slightly lower, etc.).

Heavy weighted single arm deadhangs 15-20 seconds, works really good for me. No CNS wear, great for shoulder mobility/health.
@MCJSAАй бұрын
When I first started doing bodyweight dead hangs, hanging onto the bar for just 30 seconds was excruciating at around 160 lbs bw. And, I had to work up to 30 seconds over a month or so of training. These holds he suggests sound good. I use a hook grip and feel no pain but have been interested to try other styles recently and totally get why straps could be better for high rep work.

Great video! I’ll also never go hook grip. Never even came close to losing a dl in comp yet (in the 600’s) my go to’? Heavy db fat grip carries,hex holds,fat bar dead hangs and sometimes dropsetting from either of those rt into a dead hang it’s brutal! But myself never use straps except heavy bb rows and mabi heavy rdl’s. I also hold the bar at the base of my finger not in my hand. Oh and I do like those heavy rack pulls as well I did them a lot early on and they did help my lockout for sure.

How does hook grip slide out of your hands? I can see this if you have small hands. Otherwise, isn't it just physics?
@BrazosValleyStrengthАй бұрын
No……..
@MCJSAАй бұрын
@@BrazosValleyStrength Yeah. I see that. I can see how a hook hold is similar to straps in some way in reducing demand on grip strength or stamina. Training a variety of grips makes good sense to me and these long holds look like a great way to do that. Thanks.

@@BrazosValleyStrength Jonny Candito references you here using the finger-tip grip. You didn't mention this grip in this video but I assume you trained it using these static holds. This is one I'd like to try. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3rOoZubg7umj7Msi=G72qJo3awoGzvcZn&t=144

My biggest issue with grip is the pain from the bar's knurling digging into my hand. I use straps for pain relief in higher rep work lol
@utkn Жыл бұрын
Been my issue as well but honestly you have to embrace it. Your hands will roughen up and you won't tear calluses as easily plus it won't hurt that much.

How do you program this? Do you do it on the same day as your deadlift work? After? On a different day? Would be great to know!
@BrazosValleyStrength Жыл бұрын
My newest program on my website has it listed where I do it. But I do it on a different day than my primary deadlifts because my hands could be beat up from the deadlifts on that day and might make these less effective. So I usually put them on a secondary deadlift day.

I know you are not a proponent of hook grip (you say as much in the video), but how would you implement this for a hook gripper? I find that grip is still a major limiting factor on third attempts even with the hook. Only really do it because i helicopter with mix..
@BrazosValleyStrength Жыл бұрын
I don’t this really works for hook honestly. I think that is another reason I don’t like hook. It’s hard to actually “train” for those heaviest loads.
