Late 80s humour in England was starting what appeared to be a racist joke, before taking a sharp turn to The Left. ie finishing the joke with an innocuous punchline. Thereby making the audience look racist, for jumping to conclusions by laughing pre-emptively about whatever racist shit they thought you were going to say. Good times.

I was born in 71. Roy Walker (pre-Catchphrase) had a very dry, dead-pan stand-up delivery. I even remember, at the time that Catchphrase started, thinking, why have they got him on? It'll be depressing! Obviously, it was all an act, and I loved Catchphrase! It looks like, at this point, he's having to balance the dry, dead-pan delivery with his Catchphrase persona, which most people watching, would have known him for.
