I met Aaron Neville in 1993 at an airport in Roanoke, Virgina. We had the same flight, and he sat next to me on a 2-hour flight. We had a great chat; he was very gracious and kind. I didn't ask him for an autograph; the conversation we had meant much more than an autograph he could have signed. Plus, I thought it would be crass.

One thing to note with Aaron is that he's baritone who sings high in his head voice and in his falsetto. As a tenor, if I want to cover him, I actually have to take the tune up about a fourth so I can slip in and out of my head and falsetto. It took me a minute to figure that out. I'm friends with his sons, Ivan and Jason and they both have lower voices.

Thanks, Fil, for doing another piece involving Linda - she could harmonize with anyone (and did) and she genuinely enjoyed singing with others more than she did solo. She could slot that magnificent voice into whatever part would best compliment the other singer. She has also said that Aaron has “the voice of an angel” - who WOULDN’T want to sing with that 😍
@stephaniesullivan8989 Жыл бұрын
Her “Trio” albums come to mind. I read her autobiography, she writes several times about the joys of having singers over and just sitting on the floor and harmonizing with them. It was very definitely an earliest memory of hers to have extended family members harmonizing together at the end of the day. Touching on their relationship with each other, it is delightfully shown to have been strictly professional. Upon winning the Grammy, a very nervous Mr Neville said he wanted to thank Linda first, then apparently his mind went blank, and Linda whispered something in his ear, he continued by saying “…and my wife Joel”. Absolutely adorable.
@olga138 Жыл бұрын
After they finished recording this song in the studio, Aaron said to Linda "See you at the Grammys." He was right and it was well-deserved. Also, in terms of their relationship---they respected each other as musicians and people, and had spent time rehearsing this song before they recorded it. When Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper sang "Shallow" at the Grammy ceremony, some people were saying "Oh, they must be in love." When asked about this, Lady Gaga said "It's called 'acting'." Same here---all of these people are professionals and they know how to put across a great performance.

The talent, the music may have been one of the last great Grammy Shows ever broadcast. This VHS tape still plays and sounds just like I just recorded it, love me some VHS linear stereo tracks. Though I'm clearly in the minority here, I'll say I've always DISliked voices like Aaron Neville's (and Barry Gibbs', and Johnny Mathis'). I'm not trying to persuade anyone -- JUST MY PERSONAL OPINION. Now, thanks to Fil, I finally know what the quality I dislike is called: "tremolo." (I've heard the term before but didn't understand what it meant. I always learn from Fil!) Those tiny intervals of breath instead of note sound to me like something is missing, kinda like a radio voice when the station isn't properly tuned in. Glad I watched this, if only for that reason. I fully appreciate the beauty and control of Ronstadt, AND her generosity to other singers with whom she performed.

This analysis was fascinating, especially how they conform to each other stylistically. My son and daughter are both singers and while they have very different tones, they can match vibrato in their duets, since they have grown up hearing each others vocal styles.
